Lack of respect for clubs

(Oldest Posts First)

I really think the time has come for a review of how our club competitions are ran here in the county. Everyone is aware that our senior county team is important but the affect the county team has on club fixtures is disastrous. The lack of football during the Summer months for ordinary club footballers is bordering on a disgrace. This year has been no different. Intermediate teams involved in draws last week had to play the replay on Wednesday then another game this weekend, THREE Championship games in a week!! Players are not machines! Prime example was Emyvale who played Tyholland in INNISKEEN on Wednesday night then played today and lost! This is a clear lack of respect for club players. Junior League had 2/3 rounds in the past few months, now teams play 3/4 games in 2 weeks. This is in my opinion is madness and surely needs to be looked. Players will start leaving the game or will be lost to other sport. The respect for club football is not there and those in charge don't seem to think a reasonably successful county side is the most important thing! Anyone agree or any suggestions how this could be improved?

The club scene won't change until the Intercounty fixtures are regulated and structured. Club players are always the poor relation and for as long as the current system is in play for the All Ireland series club players can forget about Summer football of distinction !!

Totally agree, Clones played rockcorry last sunday which ended in a draw , the replay was set for the following Wednesday night which was not the best times to play it, the loser was then out that sunday again ,
How can you prepare for a championship replay in the space of 2 days ?

The county have no regard for the club players.Rockcorry and Emyvale will have played 4 matches in 10 days,3 of which were championship yet some players have been in USA over summer and missed about 2 matches. The fun and enjoyment has gone out of club football. They put in a serious effort and commitment all year to play no football during summer to then play 3 games a week in wet and cold conditions. It's up to all club to voice their opinion before club football is destroyed.

i agree. there is a clear vandetta against Emyvale.
How can you expect a team to win a championship match on Sunday after coming through a replay the previous Wednesday night.

This is the team who brought honour to the county winning the Ulster Junior championship last year. GAA people in this county should stand proudly behind the Emyvale men on this issue.

It is a joke having to play 3 championship games in a week. But then to have to play an important league game last night and then another one on Sunday. And I am not restricting this to one club. All league games in intermediate (any league) are important at the moment considering the small gap between bottom and mid table and also the small gap between mid table and the top. Why wasn't the first round ogf this championship played in May / June like the rest. Its all running off in a panic now. And this is unfair on all teams involved. More draws in any of the remaining games will turn it into a farce. More games should have extra time too at county and club level

Seems to be the same in every county, St Vincents the current AI club champions drew the county final after extra time last year on the Sunday, won the replay on the Wednesday and won their Leinster first round on the following Sunday.

It's an absolute joke how clubs are treated. While I've nothing against county players, you could basically say that 600 players played very little football over the past 3 months. The intermediate teams have really been shafted. No matches for 4 weeks and then straight into a championship match, if that wasn't bad enough but the two matches prior to that were both star games so club teams hadn't seen their county player(s) for maybe 8 weeks. How is a team supposed to prepare properly? Well the answer is they can't and the county board don't care. They just want to look the big fellas up in croke park. It's going to get worse too. Development squads will suck up the best players in the county and train them to play their way, which is a brand of negative football. Some say Dublin winning the All-Ireland is a bad thing but maybe if they continue to do so then counties and indeed clubs will have a good hard look at themselves and instead of brain washing players into a system from a young age, they'll actually coach them to be better players. Anyway development squads will coach the players and "release" them for matches. How is a club manager meant to try things out to aid his own team if he only sees them on match days? Well once again he/she isn't and the county board don't care. Like a lot of things in the world the GAA is turning into an elitist organisation, where the best are worshipped and the rest can waste away into obscurity. Just one more thing regarding a post above about emyvale. Do you actually think anyone really cares about any club other than their own? Having to play 3 games at any level in a week is a joke never mind championship but these same clubs contained players who are county board wouldn't let play for their clubs 2 weeks before a county game. This just shows how much they care about players. They basically say "while you're of use to us we'll look after you but as soon as the county are beaten, we don't give a damn about your welfare".Rockcorry were actually put in a worse scenario than Emyvale as although Emyvale were beaten they had the safety net of the back door whereas Rockcorry did not. With their position in the league they could have lost faith in their plight just because the county board couldn't (won't) organise things properly to suit the 600 rather than the elite 30. Tipperary are in the all Ireland final next week yet their clubs and their county players played a round of championship last week. Would this happen in Monaghan? Not on your nelly, there wouldn't even be "star" games in case a county player got injured going to watch his team and the suits wouldn't get to put on their county crested jacket and sit with the top brass in Croker.

donaghmoyne today will play their 4th match in seven days. Championship last Sunday against emyvale in a big pitch in blaney. League wed night in horrible conditions against cremartin. Junior b final fri night against amullen and another league match Sunday against emyvale. They talk about player burnout and then they fix 4 games in seven days. An absolute disgrace what is happening. No games over the summer and now this. It wouldn't happen to any of the so called big clubs. The whole structure needs to be revamped. Two weeks should be ample time to prepare for county marches. Club leagues should be finished by the end of september. This can't go on, it is not fair on clubs.

Guys blame your own club committees. I sat at the county board meeting where they agreed to play championship matches in August and Sept and agreed to let the CCC fix matches when and where neccessary. Only option is to get rid of the back door system and play straight knock out!
