Best without a medal?

(Oldest Posts First)

Always been a fan of Galway hurlers and delighted to see them land Liam this year. Just wondering who those on here would see as the best 15 to wear the maroon between 88 and 2017 and never win a senior All-Ireland. Some seem obvious to me so I will start it off.

Some amount of talent there. Padraig Kelly has to be in the no.5 jersey though, as far as I know he is still the last man to play on the losing team in an All-Ireland final and win man of the match, in either football or hurling. Does Sean Treacy have a medal from 88? Kerins has a football one from 2001 I think.

I agree Padraig Kelly was a lovely hurler but his county career , like a lot of the lads in the 90s was short. He had a great game in 93, substituted early as a midfielder in 94 v Offaly and played his last game v Clare in 95. Collins played consistently from 2005, as young hurler of the year, until last year. He must be included imo. Sean Treacy replaced he suspended Tony Keady RIP in 89 and never won his Celtic Cross.

The current Galway hurling team won 3 big championship games in Croker in just 2 months recently. It took a generation or more of Galway hurlers 1989-2000, and another generation or more of them 2001-2012, about a dozen years each to generate 3 big championship wins in Croker. joining Leinster, and campaigning like every other county to win a championship, seems to have helped lift our performance levels. Seeing Galway once or max twice in top championship fare for 20 years 1989-2008 makes it difficult to know or remember who the top medalless players were. We just didn't see them often enough.

I think Kelly was a sub in 2000 along with Joe Cooney and Justin Campbell. Open to correction on that...

Kelly was the most promising hurler in the country at the end of the 1993 season - he was also superb in the semi-final against Tipp and in the all-Ireland club final. Jarlath Cloonan is responsible for ruining his career. Instead of leaving him in his natural wing-back position, Cloonan tried him in a variety of forward positions during the league and then stuck him in at midfield against Offaly in the '94 semi-final. Offaly had a brilliant midfield partnership at the time and Kelly was completely lost in the position. His confidence was shattered after being taken off and he never recovered his brilliant form of 1993.

Yep. As I said in an earlier post, I believe himself, Joe Cooney and Justin Campbell were subs in 2000. Three great servents at the end of their IC careers.

He had success with Sarsfields though, which should be some comfort....
