One area of concern is given we had 8 changes yesterday from last week it is obvious though that if we lose anyone our panel outside of 21/22 is fairly limited. The_analyser (Roscommon) - Posts: 2786 - 26/10/2020 13:50:03 2301612 Link 2 |
Roscommon deserve serious credit for that Div 2. campaign. So many injuries at the start, away to Armagh, Cavan and Kildare, 5 wins on the bounce including Saturday with 15 missing. Gaa_lover (USA) - Posts: 2523 - 26/10/2020 18:45:49 2301733 Link 0 |
Think Midfield is where Ros have most scope for improvement if they are to break into the top 5, I think both Shines would add a lot to the squad if they were available.

I think the Inter County ship has probably sailed for the Shines. In terms of midfield options now and years ahead it's looking at Eddie Nolan currently in the panel, Young players with potential such as Keith Doyle, Shane Cunnane, Enda Crawley and Dylan Summer. Awful shame that a talented young midfielder Conor Shanagher was forced to retire.

Roscommon deserve great credit for having played the Cavan game in the circumstances. Isnt it true that once we had beaten Armagh we could not be caught( because of head to head wins over Armagh and Westmeath + score diff.) ? We were already promoted AND as champions. And if we had stayed at home, imagine, Cavan would have gone up to Div 1 instead of Monaghan ! But Roscommon did the correct thing and gained a lot from it especially valuable playing time for some returning and young players. michael (Cork) - Posts: 371 - 27/10/2020 08:47:38 2301854 Link 0 |
Not exactly, We needed at least a point to win the League and a very small bit still a slight chance had results gone against us and westmeath had hammered Kildare we may not have got promoted. The game was great as you say to give returning and fringe players valuable game time

Cavan would have gone up? Not sure about that. With Armagh winning they were going to go up and if they slipped up Kildare were going to pounce. We were never going to concede. We have enough to compete and Cavan had withdrawals because of covid as well. A very very good achievement by the senior footballers and great challenges await in a very competitive div one next year and let's pray that we can hope to see thousands of fans in the Hyde where we can possibly have home games against the likes of Kerry and Dublin and Tyrone..and we can aspire to be comfortable playing the best in Ireland. All eyes turn to chsp now. moros (Roscommon) - Posts: 1003 - 27/10/2020 11:06:25 2301906 Link 1 |
Sorry, my mistake. Cavan would have survived relagaion, not gone up. You are right.

A lot of the national newspapers are reporting today that next year's league will be a regional one off league. The normal four divsion format to return in 2022 with Roscommon in division 1. ispeakwisdom (Roscommon) - Posts: 2411 - 27/10/2020 15:06:41 2302076 Link 0 |
What does that entail? I haven't seen any papers today ross4sam11 (Roscommon) - Posts: 75 - 27/10/2020 17:25:21 2302163 Link 0 |
Different proposals with nothing decided on yet. The idea of regional divisions would limit travel and also reduce the size of the fixture list for 2021.

Div 1 for next year looks like two group of 4. The_analyser (Roscommon) - Posts: 2786 - 27/11/2020 15:00:57 2315943 Link 0 |
I think it is a good format. Sport is strange, 3 teams not in Division 1 will be contesting the all ireland semi finals, Cavan, Tipperary and Mayo and people say that you have to be in Division 1 to have a good run in the championships. This year's championship blows that theory completely out of the water. I for one would not mind if we continued with a no back door system next year - proper championship football and it is where upsets can happen.

Good format as in its better than what was in place? The back door system is returning to the Championship next year which means it's less likely that underdogs such as Cavan, Tipperary reaching the last 4 but at least HQ have the sense to get rid of the group format for the last 8 which leaves the door open for an underdog to reach the last 4. I think its a good format for 2021 with the current COVID scenario but I am old school and to win a league I believe you must play every team in the league so I would prefer to go back to playing every team in the league in 2022. Delighted with the update on the two groups of being 4 being scrapped for championship, it just did not work. I really hope too that we get the Dubs out of Dublin for games as I think it may be the only way to beat them. rossno1 (Roscommon) - Posts: 277 - 27/11/2020 21:16:29 2316041 Link 0 |
Mayo were division 1 this year and for 23 years previous...hardly unusual for us to be contesting a semi final, our 9th in 10 years. We play in division 2 next year.

Cavan were in div one two out of the last 4 years.
