Down hurling clubs taken out of Antrim leagues?

(Oldest Posts First)

Is there any truth in this matter? There was supposedly a Down Co Board meeting to ban the down senior hurling clubs from playing in Antrim, for reasons i do not know. This would include ballycran, ballygalget and portaferry.

Clear off POL. Without the Down teams our league would be incredibly poor in standard. They always provide a stern test for all the teams in Division 1 and if anyone was to believe in this rumor then they are living in la la land. POL are you just jealous that Rossa are still a Division 2 team?

keep them in, they are good quality teams and a fecking tough game each time you play them. i know going to the likes of portaferry etc is a tough game usually. so why take out tough games to allow weaker teams in then? it would have a reverse effect. the more tougher games the better!

I don't think there's any danger of Down teams leaving,it would be a backward step for both them and the Antrim leagues.Next to the "big three" they are the best teams in the league.

no im not jealous rossa are where they are, because they arent good enough, they remain in div 2, althou they were put down from div 1 in dubious circumstances in the first place. i dont see why we should help another county remember the winners of our county championship meet a down team in the ulster championship and it only helps the down teams to play in our league it does nothing for ourselves in my humble opinion. GET THEM OUT AND KEEP THEM OUT.

you say you are helping our county, but we are also helping yours by making the antrim league higher standard, it is better for both counties and overall for ulster hurling so to suggest throwing them out is ridiculous....

we dont need down hurling, down hurling needs us. antrim can have a league of their own. use the ulster league for playing down derry teams etc.

There are only three teams in with a chance of winning anything in Antrim, and I can't see that changing anytime soon.At least the Down teams put up a bit of a challenge. Most Antrim teams are only making up the numbers, and with the exception of the top three are really Div.2 in standard.

i agree with bw on this. losing them woudnt improve the antrim league. we would bring 3 more up from diiv 2, say rossa, st galls and ballycastle. all 3 have been relagated in previous years and have made zero impact in the championship.
im not trying to run down or be disprespetive to these 3 great clubs but thats the harsh realitly of it at the moment.

also POL it wasnt doubious why rossa were put down, they wernt good enough that year and deserved to go down. you cant have it all your own way, sure yous changed the Div 1 rules before to keep yourselves up in div 1 a lot of years ago.

regardless of that, putting 3 good teams out of div 1 wont improve it. theres only 3 teams that have won it in the past years anyway in Cushendall, Loughgiel and Dunloy and Dunloy have won 3 out of the last 4 Ulster leagues at that.

POL........take the 3 Down teams out and that would be three less hammerings your team would be subjected to. OK,but by your reasoning should we pull our county team out of Leinster, they don't really want us either.

Just a point of order! Rossa were relegated by a league re-structure not because "they weren't good enough" theleague was changed without notice and they had played all year without connolly hammill kettle county players. Mind you they didn't look like they were gonna win much when we played them this year.

WHY DONT ULSTER JUST PLAY THE SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP AS A CHAMPIONS LEAGUE STYLE SET UP OVER THE YEAR WHERE ALL TEAMS WHO THINK THEY CAN WIN IT ENTER IT. EXAMPLE, ANTRIM HAVE LOUGHGEIL.CUSHENDALL, DUNLOY, ROSSA,BALLYCASTLE,ST JOHNS, GLENAIRIFFE, GORTNAMONA,ST GALLS. DOWN HAVE PORTAFERRY, BALLYCRAN, BALLYGALGET. ARMAGH HAVE KEADY. DERRY HAVE LAVEY,DUNGIVEN, BANAGHER, SWATRAGH, BALLINASCREEN AND SLAUGHTNEIL.

THATS 19 TEAMS SO 3 GROUPS OF 5 AND A GROUP OF FOUR WITH THE 4 MAIN HITTERS DUNLOY, CUSHENDALL , LOUGHGEIL AND PROB BALLYGALGET IN SEPERATE GROUPS. THEN EACH TEAM PLAYS EACH OTHER ONCE AND THE TOP 2 QUALIFY FOR THE QUARTERS WITH TOP TEAMS IN ONE POT AND RUNNERS UP IN ANOTHER. THEN A OPEN DRAW WITH THE SEMIS. MAKES ULSTER HURLING MORE COMPETIVE AND GIVES ALL CLUBS A FIGHTING CHANCE.

I think we need the Down teams in Division 1 hurling, and I also see the need for Rossa and Ballycastle in Division 1 as well.

I would like a 10 team league with Loughgiel, Cushendall, Dunloy, Glenariffe, St Johns, Rossa, Ballycastle, Ballygalget, Ballycran and Portaferry.

Everyone would play each other once, then league would split into 2, with top 5 playing each other once for the title and bottom 5 playing each other to fight relegation.

I think the 1st round matches would be very competitive as all teams would know that if they got into top 5 after 9 games, they couldnt get relegated and could possibly win a league title. Also the relegation battle would be immense as well.

What about the body of opinion that says the league does not matter, only the championship. We've seen that idea being bandied about often enough on this site.

Some great idea's for a league revamp and leagues are just for playing in ,when the big teams do get a easy match wouldnt it be an ideal situation for blooding their youngsters and bringing them on ,Thats what we need lots of hurling from all sides different blokes with different strokes.
