Players Who Were Not On The Meath Panel Last Year.

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Can the thread get back now to the topic and people to give suggestion regarding players to come into the panel?

And I would certainly not be restricting it to under 23's.

It doesn't take a genius to know that certain players are not happy with MOD,thats obvious..

Mattimoe Kells, Murphy Dunshaughlin, Battersby Skryne, B. O'brien Ratoath, O'Coillean NOM, Forde NOM, O'Dowd Walterstown, O'reilly Wolfe tones , D. Rowe Syddan
These are players I'd like to see given a chance this year In O Byrne cup.
Also has anyone else heard that Menton has dropped himself off the panel . Huge loss if he has. One of our best strongest and most consistent players for the last four years

I don't agree with you at all highking. I think you have bought into MOD's excuse of having a young inexperienced team. This is a post I posted on another thread a month ago. Apart from having Bray's (33) and Rooney's (21)age wrong, I stick to the rest of what I said. We don't have a particularly inexperienced team. No more than most inter-county teams these days.

1771627 Did he really out it down to inexperience? That's just mad. Do the young players on the panel not know that the game is 70 minutes long and that they are supposed to keep running until the end of it?

Incidently these are the ages of the players who started against Westmeath. I may be a year or two out on some, so don't jump and down if they are not all exact, but they are fairly accurate:
S Bray 35
M Burke 29
K Reilly 29
G Reilly 26
P O Rourke 26
D Tobin 25
A Tormey 25
D Keoghan 24
B Menton 24
C McGill 21
B McMahon 21
E Wallace 21
P Harnan 21
J McEntee 20
H Rooney 19

So 9 of the team are 24 or over and have been playing for the senior team for at least 3-4 years. That's about normal for most county teams nowadays. Even the younger players have been around the panel for a couple of years now. In addition Newman and Dalton were brought on, both of whom have plenty of experience. Queeny was left on the bench.
So I don't buy that inexperienced line for a minute. Anybody care to dig up the ages of the 1996 team that won the All-Ireland. Not too dissimilar to this I wouldn't have thought.
If the players are that deluded that they think their fitness levels are up to those of the top 5-6 teams in the country, and that all they are lacking is experience, then really there is no hope. The first step in tackling any problem is admitting that there is a problem in the first place. If the players and management cannot see that after three years, we are still not up to the fitness levels of Dublin, Mayo, Donegal etc., then I can't see how things are supposed to improve [/I]

As an Ashbourne club man, well I have heard nothing! But if true thats terrible news,Menton is one player that looks up to it physically and was showing leadership.I won't say much more until I know..

It was reported on local radio during the week that he was going to be taking a year out in 2016. As of now it's pure speculation but perhaps the chap wishes to go travelling. After all it's not like he's being financially rewarded for playing county football. And many young men in their mid twenties do like to go away for a year.

In the process of trying to find out,but the timing of him doing it would be awful imo,the guy is entitled to go travelling of course, but if he was happy with the setup perhaps he would have stayed, huge blow if true...

Whats more annoying is Tormey was the one i though or was rumored to be traveling..now that said i stress the word "rumored" in this case ,but what would be the chances the 2 guys traveling,i probably get very short odds with paddy power on that one!

They are both good friends, both would be losses, but I think Menton would be a huge loss..

I haven't heard anything of menton so i wont speculate.
However it would be a huge loss.
Fair play Brien. As i said i really thought it was widely known.
Look i don't think mod is up to the job myself, but in those famous words we are where we are. Lets put the shoulder to the wheels and pray for a better year. But if not there can be no extension beyond next year, out if we fail to gain promotion, win Leinster or get to quarters. No more excuses either do it or get off the pot. No one expects all Irelands just expect to be where the talent we have should be, and id even take a beatings off the dubs once we got to last 8.

Menton and Bray are two huge losses if true. With Reilly and SOR injury prone we could be really short of leaders for next years campaign. Terrible Blow for MOD and the county.

On Menton, was there not mention in the Indo on Brayer's replacement that he and Kevin Reilly might step away from the panel due to persistent injuries. Maybe I'm wrong on that.

On potential new players, I've been keeping track of the championship team of the week (I know its nothing scientific, and I don't see much club football to say these should all be given a chance)but the players who've appeared more than once on that have been
Shane Geraghty (dunno if he'd be a better option than Paddy in nets)
Conor Downey (might be an option at wing back, seems to be consistently getting up the pitch for scores but maybe not the best defensively which is what we need)
Fergus Toolan (know nothing about him)
Stephen Sheppard (that ships probably sailed and McGill Looks a prospect at full back)
Peter O'Connell (could be a useful player in the middle 8, don't know enough to say he deserves a chance)
Daniel Queeney (Maybe worth a chance in midfield)
David McLoughlin (seems to be getting big scores with Moynalvey at CF, but we might have a lot of similar players in the squad)
Robbie Flanagan (in his mid 30's so not going to happen)
Davy Dalton, Paddy O'Rourke, Donal Lenihan (already on the panel)

Off the younger players coming through from Minor/ U21 these should/could be brought in now and involved on the panel without giving game time but build him up for 2017
Thomas O'Reilly (Tones) Darragh Rowe (Syddan) Conor Nash and Brian Conlon (Simonstown I think) Ben Duggan (wasn't he involved early last year??)

Royaldunne

We are exactly where the talant we have deserve
Second tier in country is about right for us and we are probably a mid division team in division 2
Based on how our clubs fair in Leinster and until we improve our club standard and start producing the calibre of player to compete we will stay where we are
Ask yourself the question how many players do we have that would get on a Dublin Mayo kerry Donegal or even monaghan or tyrone team ???
And don't look through your green Meath glasses to answer be honest
My answer is maybe one keoghan
How can we get to a quarter final or win lienster

Spoke to a few at the club, and its news to them about Menton.. Bit odd if it was announced on local radio and people at the club are unaware of anything..

Based on two years ago. Yes keoghan based on last year he wouldn't get near dubs . Graham Reilly definitely best player we have by some distance, walk onto any team in country, Gillespie on his day , keoghan if played in right position and not capt (obviously didn't sit well with him) Newman with a return to form of first year. Apart from that none.

Mark Battersby from Skryne has been brought in. He's been impressive any time I saw Skryne this year.
