Meath V Armagh - August 2nd

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

1. paddy o'rourke
2. donal keoghan ( goes without saying that hes the man to put on clarke)
3. brian menton ( probably a false positition as armagh play 2 man inside line and bring forker out, menton to follow him)
4. donnacha tobin( important to have two fast corner backs to keep up with clarke and kyle carragher or tony kernan)
5. podge harnan ( big test for himself but he wasnt the worst of them against the dubs)
6. eoghan harrington ( think in a game like this its important to have harro's experience in such a important position)
7. mickey burke ( impressed with mickey's impact in both games, makes good decisions and has the physicallity to match the armagh boys)
8. kevin reilly ( his physical conditioning has been very impressive this year, didnt do a bad job against dubs in 2nd half, i feel he has the direct approach that we need in midfield)
9. shane o'rourke ( best fielder we have, gets forward well and 2 lovely feet, banker in our team)
10.damien carroll ( poor the last day like the majority but was excellent against kildare and deserves chance)
11.bryany mac ( just a bit more self belief and i think he could be a key player)
12.andy tormey ( can rotate into midfield ocaasionaly letting SOR come forward)
13.david bray ( why not?, feel things arent quite working with mcdonagh and we've seen what bray can do in the past)
14.stephen bray ( should have had 1-2 from play against dublin, v happy with him this champ so far)
15.mickey newman (goes without saying here, dont really have to much problems with him going out to the 40, preffered nearer to goal)
subs:

graham reily ( may seem harsh but still feel he could have a serious say on winning this game, could be a great impact sub)
brian meade/adam flanagan ( could comeon for menton, SOR or tormey at some stage)
donal lenihan ( feel he could deserve a shot, he'll be back form injury to for this game apparently)
seamus kenny ( breaking ball king, could be important late on)

Meade has to start, harrington while a great servant is not up to inter county football in my opinion, harnon would be very lucky to start was easily resposible for at least one of dublins goals! graham reilly would be another that doubtful about starting.

spillane said on radio last night that there's no way the Dubs are 16 points better than meath and i agree, he also said it was like the meath players didn't try and i agree with that also. I would hope MOD picks a more physical team than he did against the Dubs , i would start a full-forward line of the 2 brays and Newman , i also think we need to look at reverting Carroll back to left-half back , and play Meade and O'Rourke in the centre. I think we will come through this one , the player really have something to prove to both themselves and the management this time , otherwise the whole year will look like a failure. We aren't a bad team all of a sudden as a result of Sunday and hopefully we can bounce back.

I'd play Shane ORourke closer to the goals, maybe on the forty and get Paddy ORourke to land the kick outs on him. Shane O Rourke just isn't a midfielder hasn't the engine for it. I'd try Graham Reilly midfield, he had his best year for Meath in it a couple of years ago and I don't think he has been tried in it since.

Fully agree this is a very important game for us, win and we can go forward, loosing would be a complete disaster. Confidence of both players and management would be rock bottom

2 things,
1. Are you seriously dropping Menton in favour of a guy who hasnt played any championship?
2. Under what grounds are you startuing Dalton McDonagh aftert the last two perfromances?

Vital Micko starts playing players were they are generally suited and doesn't make about 10 positionally changes during the game.

McDonagh was very wasteful against Kildare, and does not offer movement,I think David Bray will at least give you that

The one major worry I'd have about david bray is a ball was played into him he was easily 3 or 4 foot ahead of dublin back who had been on from start david ran first the ball wasn't that far away dub back passed out david with ease picked up ball and easily cleared by him. Is this the type of player we want to start? Am I only one who saw this on sunday?

There's no way Dubs are 16points better than meath? They beat Wexford by 16 in their previous match.

Yes if they didn't get their jammy goal and if the ref allowed our advantage it might have been a different story. But equally Dublin could have won by 26 points.

Tackleberry yes I am dropping menton because the man who is coming in for him is better simple as. And mc donagh got little ball into him against the dubs only so much he can do and the goal he got against Kildare out Meath out of site how can you question how good mc donagh is he scored 3 goals against the county champions in the 1st round of the championship who else in Meath could do that and what would your starting team be so?

Lads I'm worried about Harnan was way too easily pushed off the ball on Sunday I think his place might be in the corner does anyone else see this?
plus Dalton Mc D needs to speed up him game and his thinking..way too slow in his thought and movement.still if he's good enough he will learn from Sunday and improve. Also Biggy need to be give the role to express himself next day no question he's got massive talent..

Lads, dont be so negative, this is a great chance for this Meath team to put things right. Armagh are an ok team on a bit of a run at the moment, but they arent Dublin. The are a team we can realistically beat so shouldnt have any fear against them - remember they are playing Div 3 football next year. I think Micko and Trevor will have the team so focused on this we will see a completely different performance on Aug 2nd. Yes, its a tough challenge but I think we can beat them so lets stay positive everyone.

Harnan got burned... but if anyone watching saw the charging the lad did to try and help the attack he was turned around and sprintingnback to pick up his man.. and look it..McMenamin did that against Kerry and numerous times this league..

He got burned on Sunday... nobody exactly decorated themselves so leave him on.. and if he gets so easily turned in the next game then add in the ????

To whoever put Young in instead of Menton.. yoh need to re evaluate how you select a team.. I wouldnt have Young on the panel personally.

A lot of soul searching in defence for the next day. But I think save the majority of criticisms until after the next day even if it is too late.

How can Menton perform if every game he plays he gets switched position 2 or 3 times, and very rarely plays in his best and favored position?!

Have been waiting a while now to see management getting team focused, Menton as said by Ziggy is CHB or not on team, and of course we can beat Armagh

Why is everyone writing us off so easily??? One bad performance and thats it we are a terrible team??? The main fact from Dublin game is that MOD got his tactics wrong. Dublin had so much space because management told players to drop back when the Dubs got the ball. Simple. Meath tried to Play Dublin rather than play their own game. OK So we got Tactics wrong and it made us look bad but we are not a bad team. We are progressing and trying new things. MOD obviously wasn't happy with last years "moral Victory" and wanted to try beat the Dubs and it didn't work. A lot of teams are going to see the same happen to them this year against Dublin. LEts get back to the Meath way of playing and see where it gets us. It did get us to a Leinster Final so Why not get us to an AI 1/4 final?? Lets be positive and support the lads and Management

Many here have said correctly that the only place to play Menton and Reilly is 6 and 12. Totally agree. Either play them here or not at all.
I was told something that surprised me yesterday by someone in club of one of the starters that surprised and disappointed me. Ziggy I think you might not be far wrong with what you said about Meade. What I heard was at no stage in the training build up was the way the team lined up actually trained, it only all changed as game got closer on Thursday Friday. Their words were ( they tried to confuse the dubs and ended confusing ourselves).
