I attended a club game over the weekend and the discussion in the car was about there only being shield football for the next number of weeks, one lad in the car suggested the games were contested even less than challenge matches. We discussed what could be done to add an edge to the competition.

We all felt that a competition that involved south Leitrim clubs and some local Cavan/Roscommon clubs would add something, playing teams who we wouldn't have met competitively before. The same could be said of north leitrim and Donegal/Sligo clubs.
The main flaws we seen was getting for example Roscommon buy in would mean they would have to approach another county to make it work for them, leading to a situation where buy in would have to be national. The other and main stumbling block we seen was the lack of ambition at county board level for change.

I think this is an idea that could add something to the shield, probably not the finished article but in my humble opinion the shield is a waste of time in many peoples eyes and something certainly has to be done to offer clubs, the grassroots of the GAA, meaningful football during the national league, I think the problem is less so come senior championship time as everyone is playing competitive challenge matches to get up to championship pace.

I hope there are other and maybe better ideas out there I would love to hear them and hopefully in the future we can have a competition that is worthwhile for players and spectators

A very good and worthwhile idea. Might make it more competitive alright.

Only one problem is that a number of those counties play a set number of league games without county players. For example Sligo who's league dosen't start until Mid-March play 3 or 4 rounds of their league without county players which enables them to continue with competitive football while the county team is in action.

I wish Leitrim would follow Slogos example.
It is by far the best way forward

Your talking about a north west league jimmy

On paper it looks good however the main problem is the current co board

Until the holidays for the boys come to an end and a bit of serious organisation goes into our own league and championship I can't see this idea of yours happening

The Leo Kenny cup is a similar style competition which gortletteragh got to the final in last summer

Is there even a shield competition this year?

The shield is a total waste of time,as most years it is never finished so what is the point.

I do think that playing league games without county players is something we should look into at least but I think most counties still have a competition played through the time of the intercounty league which would not hold the prestige of the league/championship.
I think we should either reform or scrap the shield as it stands though, as was mentioned before a competition that nobody is bothered enough to play the final of is totally pointless.

Does the 2011/12 one not have to be played first?

Think the Bors won it in 2011 & 2013 and 2012 is yet to be played
