Good mix of players. Think Covid had a bearing too. Be good to see how some of the younger lads get on. Hopefully the lads win!

Presuming Dee , Chin, Liam Ryan and Shaun Murphy still have to come into mix

Add in the oilgate players too who have a Leinster final next week, Mikie Dwyer too.

Replying To beano:  "It's mad. In era where player welfare is front and centre, O'Hagan is doing his Leaving Cert, is the captain of the Combined Schools football team, whilst playing both codes for his school, training with the senior set-up at the minute and will surely be back training with the under-20s shortly (if they aren't back already).

Player welfare isn't worth the paper it's written on."
Just going back to this one, and just using this lad as an example. Lot being asked of him at the moment all right. But on the other hand, if somebody said to him, "listen, for the sake of player welfare, you're doing too much, and you have to choose just one or two of them"....and then he chose hurling with the school and the county, because he'd prefer to make it as a hurler rather than a footballer in the long run....certain people wouldn't be long about complaining that hurling people were telling him he shouldn't be playing football.

Another example of how you just can't win.

Looking forward to see how the newcomers fare, and indeed if Devitt makes an impression in his new role in what is a long-standing problem area for us. Full-forward line looks to be a completely different departure than the previous regime, although maybe it's a matter of just giving lads game-time and we'll (rightly or wrongly) have a more familiar look when Limerick come to town.

The Walsh Cup is the time to experiment. Also some lads were out with covid and the Oylegate lads are playing their Leinster Final next weekend. Hopefully the League might see more players blooded for the Championship too. I dont think covid is going to be gone by April so this year more than ever before we are going to need a good big panel for the Round Robin.

No I didnt go up but it was great to hear that everyone got a good run out and hopefully more of the same next time! Great result too though obviously no point reading too much into it at this early stage of the season.

Hard to know what went on today? Twitter updates were awful. Why not have a stream and charge ppl €5 to watch. Plenty of ppl would of paid it. Thought it was a missed opportunity.

I was at it and it wasn't a great game of hurling to be sure. The standout player was Paudie Foley for me, really impressed me for a lad that took a year out. Ungodly amount of wides shot by both teams, a super picky ref (for both sides tbf), and a pretty experimental side.

We didn't play an out and out sweeper and Kevin Foley spent most of his time between the half and full foward line. Jacko played wing back and was decent. Rory was going deep A LOT and didn't really threaten that much. He got one absolute peach of score though. Cathal Dunbar had a decent game in the middle of the field and Paul Morris' touch really impressed me when he came on in the second half. Never really looked like losing but didn't get out of second gear either. Oisin Foley wing forward had a decent game too I think, hurled an awful lot of ball. Same old problem though is we had almost no ball winners in the forwards and it was coming out just as fast as it was going in.

To be fair, the new PRO had a county final with his home club at the same time so couldn't be in two places at the same time.

I would take a lack of updates of the Walsh Cup so long as the League onwards is covered

My pick of the new lads was Oisin Foley. Worked like a dog and hurled an awful lot of ball. Played well for his first time in a Wexford Jersey wing forward. The corner back (forget his name now) had a solid game.

Outside of that I wouldn't really say the rest put their hands up or anything. Richie Lawlor hardly got a sniff of the ball but to be fair to him when he did he got the goal.

I was up at the game, named 15 started with few positional changes team was:

Fanning

Niall Murphy
Donohoe
Devitt

Flood
P Foley
Jacko

R'OC
Dunbar

Oisin Foley
K Foley
Billy Dunne

R Lawlor
Conor Mc
O Pepper

Like the footballers on Saturday every outfield sub got a run. Obviously hard to gauge much from a pre season game but few main things to note for me were it was a very open game, no nominated sweeper, possibly looking at Kevin Foley in a Cian Lynch type playmaker role at 11, Paudie Foley looking very sharp, couldn't believe Oisin Pepper wasn't mentioned in previous posts, done really well his 1st touch is excellent did alot of good work in the build up to the goal, his shot was saved before Lawlor pounced for the rebound, we were not afraid to launch long direct ball alot of diagonal ball too. No short dribbly 10 metre sidelines we were accustomed too and every sideline cut we took was more of the traditional variety, interesting positions of subs introduced was Conor Hearne seemed to be wing back and Liam Og was corner forward like with St Annes last year rather than midfield, we did hit alot of wides but to be fair we racked up a good score too we'll probably be a bit more open at times at the back with no nominated sweeper Laois ran at us straight down the middle to create their goal, pitch was in great shape.

We've Tipp in a challenge game next weekend and Kilkenny in Walsh Cup at home the following weekend. On the lack of a stream that would be at the foot of the Leinster Council with Galway/Offaly and Dublin/Antrim both available, I think they were €10, seen Ulster Council were charging €12 for McKenna Cup games on the stream.
