Replying To wexico15:  "I was up at the game, named 15 started with few positional changes team was:

Fanning

Niall Murphy
Donohoe
Devitt

Flood
P Foley
Jacko

R'OC
Dunbar

Oisin Foley
K Foley
Billy Dunne

R Lawlor
Conor Mc
O Pepper

Like the footballers on Saturday every outfield sub got a run. Obviously hard to gauge much from a pre season game but few main things to note for me were it was a very open game, no nominated sweeper, possibly looking at Kevin Foley in a Cian Lynch type playmaker role at 11, Paudie Foley looking very sharp, couldn't believe Oisin Pepper wasn't mentioned in previous posts, done really well his 1st touch is excellent did alot of good work in the build up to the goal, his shot was saved before Lawlor pounced for the rebound, we were not afraid to launch long direct ball alot of diagonal ball too. No short dribbly 10 metre sidelines we were accustomed too and every sideline cut we took was more of the traditional variety, interesting positions of subs introduced was Conor Hearne seemed to be wing back and Liam Og was corner forward like with St Annes last year rather than midfield, we did hit alot of wides but to be fair we racked up a good score too we'll probably be a bit more open at times at the back with no nominated sweeper Laois ran at us straight down the middle to create their goal, pitch was in great shape.

We've Tipp in a challenge game next weekend and Kilkenny in Walsh Cup at home the following weekend. On the lack of a stream that would be at the foot of the Leinster Council with Galway/Offaly and Dublin/Antrim both available, I think they were €10, seen Ulster Council were charging €12 for McKenna Cup games on the stream."
Conditioning-wise, how do Pepper and Lawlor look in terms of intercounty hurling? Are they a bit light still?

I'm only wondering because they are talented chaps (Pepper lit up the senior championship, as did Lawlor before his injury), but I would compare them to the two Limerick lads hovering around the panel last year who were also Leaving Cert students but ready-made in the S and C department.

How did Devitt get on actually? Egan himself mentioned that Jacko hurled well at wing-back, and acknowledged that there will be days where he might be marking a less physical opponent. It was encouraging to hear he is prepared to adapt to opponents, unlike Davy who was too set in his ways.

Pepper and Lawlor probably still have a bit to go in terms of S&C, I believe Pepper only tuned 18 in the last couple of months, no harm getting a run in an environment like yesterday to get them to the pitch of the physicality of this level, with the u20 championship rule I mentioned previously interesting to see how these players and the likes of Cian Molloy are used further into the year. Devitt did well and was solid, didn't put a foot wrong in fairness to him.

Heard from one of the lads involved yesterday that they're going away to Tipperary next weekend. Don't know the exact venue, but it's an away game anyway.

Wasn't at the game but it was good to get a win in Darragh Egan's first game. He seems to be resting a lot of the seasoned players. No Chin, Murphy, Morris, Ryan or Dee ( married a few days ago) Finding a few new lads is essential for the growth of the team. Hopefully he'll stick with them for the remainder of the Walsh cup and doesn't discard them if they don't play well. It takes time to blend into the senior set up. 1- 28 was a good score, even against limited opposition. There will of course be much tougher games ahead so it will be very interesting and informative as the season rolls on.

Egan also mentioned that Flood has been the most impressive trainer since he came in, and Foley and Jack performed well beside him (I know we can't read too much into anything this time of year).

I do wonder does it spell the end of MOH's unreal service? I'd say the three that played yesterday are probably ahead of him in the pecking order now, with Damien Reck, Jack Cullen and Shaun Murphy other options on the wing. And with Ryan presumably locked-in at full-back when he returns, it's hard to see where Matt would fit in. He has been a warrior, and I have stood up for him when others were questioning him, but again it would be a departure from Davy's tenure, seeing as he was basically undroppable.

Wouldn't write off MOH but if there are opportunities given to new players when the more important game arrives someone will lose out I suppose.

MOH has been carrying injuries the last couple of seasons I wouldnt have him retired just yet. Is Jack Cullen in the extended panel? Great news if he is. I'd say we wont know probable championship starters until the end of the league but I do think as many players as possible getting more senior intercounty experience will be vital as you can almost be sure there will be several players missing a couple of Round Robin games each if the covid situation persists as seems likely. This situation will also give more opportunities to more players between now and then as no doubt some of the panel are likely to catch it between now and then.

Don't want to be delving too much into Science and Covid but I think any player who had it recently has about 6 months of immunity. Personally only know 1 individual who has had Covid twice and they tested in positive last February and again over Xmas. Few sportspeople have tested positive twice including some tennis player making headlines in Melbourne ...

Presumably it's not behind closed doors if it's being streamed?

I would have thought the Combined Schools QF would have taken precedence for Corey Byrne Dunbar.

Did you go Wexico? Couldnt make it after. Great to see so many lads getting a run out and heard the lads looked sharp enough for the time of year.
