Replying To realisticpaddy:  "Very mediocre game in Ballybofey. Cavan were physically stronger throughout the field and the result was predictable from early in the game unless Cavan didn't try. Try they did, and effort levels were commendable by all personel. This was not a performance that would beat division 1 teams, but it was informative, and It no doubt will enlighten Mattie and his mentors further on their quest for success. Too many passes went astray, possession not got when it should have. These errors will happen to the best of teams and to eradicate them altogether might appear ambitious but it has to be the target .Nothing less will bring success at this level."
Would agree entirely with Realisticpaddy. It is good to have these pre season games to iron out the problems and you are right sloppiness and carelessness will be severely punished in Div. 1. I think the Dubs will probably be a bit fore- warned but it is the best time to play them. And without Connolly they are not as effective.
I was in Breffni a week ago but dident travel to Ballybofey and was just wondering if the injury situation is easing.
Also any word on lads like Mc Veety, Argue, Mc Enroe , Martin Dunne, (or is he back in) Niall Murray, Moynagh, Tom Hayes, Galligan , Gearoid etc. Also is Aidy Cole in the squad ?

Ado not in. Gearoid injured. Tom Hayes playing with UCD. Martin Dunne was in at start not sure if he still is. Other players you mentioned are carrying knocks.

I know it's early days, and experimentation is ongoing, but you have to remember this was against Donegal's U21 team. It took us until the last ten minutes to finally shake them off.
Major improvement needed and hopefully we have a settled near to full strength squad for the national league, because what I've seen so far won't be sufficient against the like of Dublin, Kerry, Mayo etc..

Niall Murray injured. Looks like Buchanan is gone for a few months now also.

I think that Mattie has now looked at a lot of players in training and in challenge games and I guess that he has the most of his league 32 in his mind. He said in the interview with the Irish news that he is trying to figure out who can play in which position but doesnt think there is such thing as a centre half back anymore with how the game has gone. He wants us to have scorers all over the pitch and Faulkner did this to good effect from the half back line against Donegal it seems.

I would agree that the standard has not been very high yet (I didnt make it to Ballybofey) but we are still very early in the year and we will gather momentum. One thing is for sure, there is a feel good factor back amongst the Cavan fans and some of the players too I hear. Extremely early doors but it seems that Mattie's reign in Cavan is off to a positive start!

Replying To soraghallaigh:  "Great team named by Mattie! I had a Tyrone fan tell me Cavan have stolen his childhood hero:) Great to see Joe Dillion starting again. His Dad was some player for Cavan, n hope Joe can follow in his shoes. He is a strong fighter too. Had a terrible injury, n looked like his days were done, but the boy is flying! Built to bruise! His performance, along with Tom Hayes in the forwards for U-21's in that cruel defeat against Dublin few years ago was immense. The boys helped lift the siege of pressure, n made 'the great' Dublin doubt themselves. Of course the Ref made sure Dublin got through. I always remember funnily about that game was that same ref, did the linesman in Croker for Cavan losing to Roscommon. How in the world does that happen? Now if that was Dublin, well........Go on Joe n Breffini!"

Have to say watching matties interviews after the last two weeks and you have to say his positivity and charisma are to be admired. He always says the right things and if the positivity rubs off on the players it will be exciting times indeed. I have a feeling this boys will be prepared to run through brick walls for mattie very soon.

cavan are going to lose this one.

UUJ have too many star inter-county players .

will be lucky to make the semi-finals of the McKenna cup.

so its Armagh,Monaghan,Tyrone and Fermanagh who advance to the semi-finals. we could have done with a few more games. Mattie's first set-back.

Bit of pocket money for the students at 5/1. Were you on?

actually It may be Derry instead of Fermanagh. possibly Armagh and Fermanagh in a play-off

Sounds to me like Mattie took the students for granted and we paid the price. They had the sharpshooters to spring from the bench and we... don't have that option. And won't.
Still, it's only the McKenna Cup. All focus towards the league now and hope that tonight will be a wakeup call to what top quality forwards can do against us if given the chance.

floodlight failure in owenbwg earlier on delaying match for 30 ims. teams agreed to play 60 instead of 70. the result of this match really important as it dictates which 2 from Armagh,Derry, fermanagh go through.

it looks like derry have gone through . Fermanagh and Armagh have both a score-difference of 19 so I don't know what happens now.

anyone know the rules of this competition. according to my estimates. the 3 group winners (on points difference are Derry,Monaghan, Tyrone
the best second placed team are jointly Armagh and Fermanagh with a difference of 19.

cavan's difference is 11 and Down's is 0.

Gerry smith very impressive again tonight him and Mcveety linked up in the right way could add a quick attack.... Some blows to Cavan as 5 Ramor players turned down the offer to play which would of added something to this Cavan team.. Anyone wondering what new talent will be introduced
