Replying To fredflint:  "I still cannot believe there are people on this forum who think that moving from Div 3 to Div 1 with a team of young players is not an indication that the U21 success we had has been a positive effect on the senior team. You really have to be of a totally negative composition to think that. We made slow steady progress at senior level in the last few years in the league but unfortunately not in the championship (at least since we made the quarter final). This year however has been very disappointing so far for me. We lost our Div 1 status with a whimper and the last game in particular was lost on the line due to some mind boggling positional changes for no obvious reason combined with players that simply were not up for it. Of course all will be forgotten if we do well in Ulster but the signs are not good so far.

The U21 performance was terrible and although we were up against an excellent team, surely we should expect a better tactical show. Again, the management of that team had a chance to watch Donegal against Tyrone the previous week and seemingly made no use of that advantage. Time for a change there for next years U20s and I think the County Board should go cap in hand to Terry Hyland and ask him to come back and help bring lads on. Tankings like Wednesday will do serious damage to young players coming through, we need to be very competitive as teams like Donegal and Tyrone are taking these underage tournaments more and more seriously every year."
Good man Fredflint I was wondering when the bring back TH would start.
TH walked away from the U21 set up because he thought he had bigger fish to fry.
After 4 and a half years in the senior setup and 100 players later he left us in Div 1 which was great .
I honestly believe with the amount of talent TH had at his disposal we should be far more advanced than we are at Senior level.
Mattie has come in and seemingly has to start all over hence players playing in different positions throughout the league .
Lots of these players are playing Senior football for the last 4/5 years yet there no settled spine to the team.

Gilligan, Faulkner/Dunne, Clarke, Gearoid, McVeety, Givney.

That would've been your settled spine right there (apart from Givney obviously) if matty had to stick with players in positions they were playing well in.

Add to that the fact that Gilligan, Dunne, Gearoid and Faulkner all had injuries during the league and Clarke got suspended and you'll see there were very few opportunities to select a settled team anyway. You gonna blame TH for that too?

Well we had 4 years to get a settled spine and didn't so how you expect Mattie to get one in 10 games without experimenting?
Let's not blame the Saviour of Cavan football.
When's the shrine been erected??

So Kerry win the league title a team Cavan should have beaten by at least 5 points if not more. Crazy game Cavan get relegated and they win the league.

Yes Sean if we were to win every game we should have then we would have plenty of success too.
But we bottle the big games and have been doing that for over 40 years
We bottled it in '76, '78, '83, '95 and won it in '97 all because of a point that never was.
We have bottled umpteen important games this past 4/5 years.
Our mentality seems to be " let's be happy to get to these finals" winning doesn't seem important because we are always team building.

Awwnow will you give over, if football annoys you this much you should probably stop watching.
FYI we bottled nothing in 95, Tyrone were much better team. I can't speak for the rest

The big difference is: Kerry is a big day team, Cavan is not. This mentality needs to be instilled into the players before anything is won or lost

We didn't bottle anything. There is always a winner and a loser. Did Dublin bottle it yesterday. No they didn't. We certainly didn't bottle it in 1995 (Well beaten). We didn't bottle it in 2001 either. Of course we didn't bottle it against Kerry in the league. Kerry were the better team.

I really don't want to disagree with you s goldrick but you could not have been at the match to come out with the above statement. Cavan should have buried them they had far more chances and in my opinion the better team and they left a point slip for sure. My opinion of course??

yes, but is that bottling it ? . maybe my idea of bottling it differs from others.

I noticed yesterday in the league final, Cluxton had always 2 or 3 footballs by his post so as soon as the ball goes dead (or sometimes even before) he
has a new ball ready for the kickout. Our keepers always seem to be going behind the goals for the ball or waiting for a ball-boy or someone in the crowd to give it to them. What is the rule. Can you have a collection of footballs in the back of the net or just behind the post. This is the reason why cluxton finds his man so often from kickouts. His outfield players are aware of this and are already moving in to space as soon as the ball goes dead. We should adopt this tactic.

No they lacked the experience that you put the ball over the bar the goals will follow. Simple basic stuff, glory will follow in it's own time. Kill off the game with points if however an open chance is available it's a different story. Cavan went for two goal attempts when the better option was to punch them over the bar one in particular would have put Cavan ahead by 3 but they came up the pitch both times and scored a point from these elementary errors. Two chances also with Joe Dillion running off the player in possession he was ignored and the end result was another two turn overs. These are elementary mistakes.

agreed and it was one of our most experienced players who should have got his head up when Dillon was in space. I would agree with you that we didn't take our chances but I wouldn't say we bottled it. It was poor decision making and wrong options (That's what I mean about Kerry being a better team). If, after years of playing county you still want to go-it-alone and not be a team player then I'm afraid we wont win when it matters.
This is coachable to an extent but perhaps it's too late for some.

Well it's common sense isn't it?if you want to take a quick out you must have a ball. Why would you think there would be any rule?
As long as the footballs are not on the field of play then they not interfeering with the game.
No point in having 20 balls behind the goals if players don't find space for the quick kick out quickly.
It's called being switched on ..

I was just wondering. Does there not have to be an official ball or does the ref need to check the balls before the game starts. You could have a smaller ball or a lighter ball or a heavier ball or a ball that's not pumped up enough or a ball with glue on it etc etc.

Cavan have the third best away record in league since 2011 and 11th worse home record. Only one person to blame.
