although if you consider Monaghan as rivals for the relegation places then it may be 2 points dropped (instead of being level on points with them we are 2 behind them).

I certainly agree with your post about K Clarke . I just do not see where he fits into a team passing game.

Disgraceful stuff on here. Abusing dedicated lads after a decent start in the top division. They lost once TO DUBLIN. Cop yourselves on and at least wait until half time in the division.

Would agree that people need to relax a bit before giving the final judgement on players. It takes time and hard work to gel lads into a position and role within a county team. You can't just give up on first setback. Killian Clarke is a fine footballer and it would be foolish to think he can have no role further outfield. Look at Givney, bar one good performance against Meath in 2013 he looked for the most part a fish completely out of water at full forward. But persistence paid off and now people are asking Mattie to go down on his knees and beg him to come back. Teams are always innovating and trying different things. If you don't you stagnate. Yes it would be nice to stay up this year but we also need to think in the long term as well. Getting the balance right is difficult and it'll be April before we are fully able to judge the new management and where the team is at.

Has anyone ever just sat back and thought....Cavan are simply not good enough. Go to any club match in Cavan, and pick out a County player, virtually, impossible. How can we expect to compete at the highest level, when a lot of our County Players are playing junior/intermediate club football. Ramor won the Senior Championship this year with no fewer than 10 U21 players on the team, that says a lot about senior football in Cavan.
The County Board need to start at the beginning, get the club scene in order, make club football more competitive, if amalgamations have to happen, then so be it, but until club football becomes more regular and more competitive, we'll be having the same conversation about Cavan Football in 10 years, having won nothing. I see lads asking for Giveney, Mackey & Co to come back, this guys were there before, and we won nothing.
When McGleenon got the job, he stated that he would not be playing a defensive game, 90 seconds into the Dublin Game, we had 13 men beside the ball, the score line against Monaghan also reflected a defensive approach.

So how do amalgamations improve a player?
Less players will get a chance to play club football.
As for Ramor winning the Senior Championship with 10 u21s is that not a good sign??
Wouldn't it be worse if they were all over 30s?
Actually when Cavan Gaels were winning championships there was lots of u21s playing too.
I think it's a good sign.

Does it matter really what grade of football our county players are playing be it junior, intermediate, senior? They are mostly playing county football from January right through to July/August/September depending on results so for most of the year they are playing the highest standard of football possible within the gaa. So this thing of county players needing to play a better standard of club football to improve is bull granted a higher standard of club football will bring on players not involved with the county but it's not going to improve lads that are playing a higher standard anyway. I was always amused when people used to say that a lad on the county needed to play a higher standard of club football to improve.

Jesus people need to pull back a bit and let the lads bed in, what people have been saying all along is that this league campaign will be a steep learning curve, and it will. Its cavans first time in the top tier in 12 years or more. i just hope that they get a few results that'll keep them up. From my viewing of it i don't think cavan have got even close to a rhythm yet and i think that when they do they could be a handful for any team. you have to be realistic about the two league games so far and the defensive approach. One was a baptism of fire against arguably the best attacking team of the last 40 years and the other was a local rivalry against Monaghan which is always tight no matter how many divisions separated the two teams. When you look at the weekends league results. Mayo beat Kerry (who hammered Donegal) by 3 points mind.......Monaghan had previously beat Mayo. Roscommon pushed Donegal to the limit and could have beat them, Tyrone, a team we would like to think we're not far off drew with Dublin. So its an extremely tight division. There will be points picked up yet

Dublin also had 13 behind the ball too. No one would accuse them of defensive football. It's all about transition to attack which is still too ponderous. You then say the scoreline against Monaghan relected defensive football which seems to indicate you weren't at it. I was at it and it wasn't because of defensive football but rather terrible shooting. Cavan had a lot of scoring opportunities, some even simple, but missed loads. Ramor having so many young players shows the club are doing something right and in case you missed it there has being alterations made to the club championships in order to improve it.

bart, I think when you have a really good player that is playing for a junior team they are used to doing it all by themselves. The onus is on them at club level to drive the team forward, to get the scores etc etc. They are used to shouldering the burden and taking on a lot of the work-load . As ac result when they go to a county set-up it is hard for them to adjust. They still have this go-it-alone mentality that possibly players from successful senior teams don't have as the senior players would be used to sharing the work-load and playing more as a team-player. Obviously this can be worked on and in time eradicated , however some players simply never change and will always put the head down and try to do everything themselves. (it rarely works at county level any more).

Explains why Givney was such an asset to Cavan !
This Senior team snobbery amuses me. If the player is good enough and is brought into the county team, he is moulded into the system. He gets thegame experience in the Mc kenna cup, league, championship and challenge matches. Ask any player who comes into the squad, even playing div 1 for the club, they will tell you that county is a step up. So therefore they have to work hard to be kept on merit. If the player is good enough he will reach this new standard regardless of the status of his club. Givney is an example of this.
If you look at our county team over the last number of years, no one was allowed to be individual as it was a system.
This year it's not really anything different. In fact, this year, the man who tries to do it all himself is on a senior club team. Taking frees form the left when he is a right footed player etc.
Maybe we need someone who is used to taking responsibility and having to turn a game by a bit of individual brilliance, because we are lacking individual flair and a bit of unpredictability.
Last week it would have been great to see a lad grab the ball, take on a man or tow, make a direct run, show a bit of individual brilliance and save us from the monotony that we had to endure.

We're simply not good enough for what exactly? Just because we're not winning Ulsters and All Irelands doesn't mean we'd be as far off playing in Division 4. We're in Division 1, a far cry from where we were a few short years ago. 24 other teams would love to be there. We need to keep striving for improvement regardless of whether the silverware arrives or not. It's not about being the best, it's about being the best we can be.

A player has to be good enough to begin with to do the things you talk about Dougal. It's not simply a case of telling a lad to go out and do it. If it was that easy to create players Monaghan would have 6 of Conor McManus.
And playing a higher standard of club is of course going to be beneficial. If you are playing a more intense club game against better players, in front of bigger crowds, you will be tuned in better to things that you should never try and get away with. On the subject of Givney it's only last year that he became crucial to us. Before that there were plenty on here who were indifferent to him and wouldn't necessarily have had him first choice. He had plenty of bad habits that he carried in from playing Junior.
When people say there are plenty of opportunities to try lads out in the county season I don't think they appreciate just how short the season is. It's not premiership where you might have over 40 games between all competitions. It could take 4 or 5 years to rack up the same number of games played. Managers are under pressure from the off and often times a lad only gets the one shot at it. If there was a better club scene where a lad coming in was used to a performing on a higher stage I cannot see how it wouldn't be far more beneficial.

Givney played with Ulster and won a Sigerson with DIT. High enougj standard there. Can't be blaming Mountnugent for everything.

Where did I blame Mountnugent. He played on those teams because of his undoubted talent. That talent would have been served better had he been playing regularly at a higher standard of club football. Not a great stretch of the imagination and by no means a cut at Mountnugent. He's their club man and they would be crazy not to want him involved with their team. If there were amalgamations he would still be a Mountnugent club man.
