Awards: U16 Footballer of the Year

December 29, 2012

Moynalvey and Meath's Brian Harnan - Under 16 Footballer of the Year.
For the first time in many years two U16 players made the extended panel of the Meath minors, Jack O'Sullivan from Dunshaughlin was substitute goalie in the Leinster Final and turned in some great performances for his club at U16, 17 and Minor.

Moynalvey's Brian Harnan also was involved with Meath Minors and he starred in his club's win in the U16 Division 4 Football Championship win and he was one of the main reasons Jenkinstown Gaels made the MFL Division 2 Final in Navan. He was a vital player in Meath's Gerry Reilly Cup run and but for his dual commitments with the Minors on All-Ireland semi-final day, the Trophy could have stayed in Meath.

Killary Emmet's Daragh Rowe was in fine form all year and had a great tussle with Harnan in the U16 Final in Pairc Tailteann. He put up some mighty scores all year and was unlucky to also be on the losing side as Killary lost a Minor Championship Final and the U16 Summer League Roinn B Final.

Trim's Harry Purcell put in some fine performances most notable in the Gerry Reilly games against Dublin and Westmeath. In the Roinn B Summer League Final win he was unstoppable and is definitely one player for the future.

For what can be considered one of the smaller clubs, Boardsmill had two fine players at U16 level in 2012. Charley Bird shone throughout the year while not involved in any County Football squad he played in goals with the Meath Minor Hurlers and was in fine form as his club won the U-16 Division 6 League. His club mate Kyle Dixon was a star midfielder with the Meath u-16 and looks like a real star of the future.

Ronan McDonagh of Clann na nGael has caught plenty of eyes on the Football pitch's of Meath and had a really fine game in the Athboy sides MFL Division 3 win over neighbours Dunderry. He had better luck at U-16 level when Clann na nGael won the Roinn C of the Summer League.

St Cuthbert's Sean Power is a very strong player for his age group and is expected to make a big push to be a part of the Meath Minors in 2013.

Simonstown Gaels won the Division 1 MFC with a fine team display and in Brian McGrath and Chris O'Neill they had two standout players. O'Neill is a very talented forward and McGrath normally plays around centre field.

Ratoath player Daragh Kelly another who is apt at Hurling lined out at midfield as his club marched to a second consecutive Minor Football Championship Division 1 title.

All are very talented players and one hopes that this will lead to a strong Meath Minor Team in 2014.

Chris O'Neill, Ronan McDonagh, Kyle Dixon and Darragh Rowe get a credible mention but Brian Harnan of Moynalvey just gets the nod for U16 player 2012
