Awards: Best former intercounty footballer in club management role

December 22, 2012

Davy Byrne guided Ratoath to the JFC and Tailteann Cup.
After hanging up the boots, the natural progression for intercounty footballers is to try their hand at club management.

Sean Kelly guided Donaghmore /Ashbourne to FL Division 1 honours this year and a semi-final appearance in the senior championship where they found Navan O'Mahonys too hot to handle.

Kelly's former Meath team-mate Ian Kearney was, once again, over Bective but the JFC proved elusive for the Navan parish club.

Kearney has since moved on to pastures new and will be in charge of Moynalvey in 2013.

Ex-Laois star Leo Turley and Blackhall Gaels didn't figure too prominently in the SFC permutations while the same can be said for the Colm Coyle managed Oldcastle.

1987 Meath Leinster junior winning captain John Andrews and his Trim players narrowly missed out on an immediate return to the senior ranks.

Former Dublin All-Ireland winners P.J. Buckley and Barney Rock experienced little success with Walterstown and Skryne respectively but their fellow countyman Davy Byrne masterminded Ratoath's successful JFC campaign.

Byrne was a selector when the Dublin border club last won the Junior silverware back in 2004 and returned to wave his magic wand again this year.

He has since left to join Jim Gavin's Dublin backroom team as goalkeeping coach and he gets the nod for this award.
