Michael Murphy - Over rated?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

So the overall consensus is that Michael Murphy is one of the greatest players of all time and anyone who disagrees is a fool. Have I got that right?

They're shooting Seanie Johnston's as a matter of urgency at the minute, so any time after that I would assume.

Breffni - I presume when he retires like most players . No player currently playing has got one . What are you on about ?

I'm simply making a point about how so many of you seem to struggle with the concept of "over-rated". It doesn't mean "not good" as so many of you seem to believe. He's a brilliant player, one of many brilliant players currently playing. As Liam said in the op, some of you seem insistent that he is the 2nd coming of Maurice Fitz.

Breffni I think Murphy should be in that category when he retires. However its hard to know whether Murphy will ever get the same plaudits because he doesn't play for Kerry.

Breff, u nailed it.

I never ever ever said he wasnt a mighty player. I acknowledged his brilliance. I also said he would walk on every team in the country.
You'd sware I said he was useless!! In fact, the way some lads reacted you'd sware i said their mothers were useless.......!

I merely posed a question, if possibly people maybe rate him a little higher than he deserves, nothing more nothing less.
And I was brave enough to give my own opinion, as against the grain as it may be, that I think super footballer that he is, I would not fear him the way I would fear The Gooch a few years back or Peter Canavan back in his day.

Some people would have him in the Canavan/Gooch/Maurice Fitz class, personally I wouldnt. For me he is more in the Colm O'Rourke/Bernard Brogan/Stevie McDonnell class.

Good point Liam.
However, I think most people put him in the same bracket as you've so excellently described (Stevie Mc, Bernard Brogan (in his prime), Colm O'Rourke etc).
Therefore, he's not over rated.

pdempsey, i would also have your own SuperMac in that category.
That fella was a joy to behold, and i recall his interview on second captains, if it was possible i actually had even MORE respect for him after that,
I met him in limerick once upon a time, in tesco shopping, as u do. Shook his hand, told him i was in the hill the day he scored THAT point. A nicer fella u couldnt meet.
Legend

C***k on the Block so, for me the best 5 footballers in Ireland are
(ye can scream blue murder and bias all ye want, I am being honest)

1. Diarmuid Connolly
2. Michael Murphy
3. Conor McManus
4. Paul Flynn
5. Aidan O'Shea

Plenty I could give an honourable mention to etc etc but if I start down that path I will never stop.
No Kerry lads....imagine.....but thats how I see it in 2016.

What people forget about Michael Murphy is the impact he has also had on his club Glenswilly, a tiny village outside Letterkenny, leading them to a number of Donegal Senior championships, a club with no tradition of winning anything. To produce at club level and county level is no average achievement. A once in a lifetime footballer and an absolute gentleman.

What would lead me towards bestowing greatness on Murphy is that he does everything while at the same time being captain & leader of his team.

Many's the player found the extra responsibility & strain of captaincy affect his performance but Murphy seems to revel in it.

Not many like him about.
