Michael Murphy - Over rated?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Ah now don't know about that he didn't get a sniff when he was inside and was beaten to every ball yesterday. Done alright when he went out the field but Roscommon had him well handled.

? He claimed 2 long balls which went in near the end and if he hadn't been fouled Roscommon's clean sheet might have been in danger.

Lockjaw he did surely and two fabulous catches they were ,one of the times he wasn't fouled though and laid to ball off to a different player who ref then taught had been fouled. I am not saying he is overrated I am just in reference to a claim a Donegal poster said which he claimed Murphys performance yesterday was best he has ever seen from Donegal player. I highly doubt that to be true as I expected more off him due to high praise he gets he was roasted yesterday by Neil Collins and there were at least 5 players out on pitch who performed better than he did yesterday so doesn't give much substance to post about it been best ever by a Donegal player

Overused maybe but certainly not overrated. It would be more helpful to his game and to Donegal if they could afford to leave him in at Full forward.

Pingcity - i stand by what I said . We were so poor everywhere and Murphy single handedly got us in the game .

I stated is there a better all round player in the game ? Is there ?

He lost one 50/50 ball in the first half . He played inside for maybe 12 mins overall so I don't really know how he could of got roasted .

Anyway . You's were suberb yesterday so well done . A nice team is emerging and good luck !

An amazing footballer but I still think Connoly is a head above him. Connoly can do everything Murphy can (apart from some of the ridiculous sidelines) and is faster, leaner and a bit more exciting when he's on the ball.

Over-rated?? to claim that is a criminal offence! the football that lad has played and he hasn't even reached his prime yet (the supposed prime years, 27-29).... some of the fielding yesterday against our boys was immense... not a shadow of a doubt that he makes every other player on that Donegal team better and it's against his own detriment that he can play anywhere on the field, if he was able to be left at 14 for 70 minutes then the over rated argument wouldn't exist....

He is not over rated. People say he is among the best in the country, that is fair enough. I think that if people were to claim that he was the best, then that is an impossible thing to stand over, as it demands consistency in every game. Unfortunately, as we need Murphy out the pitch very often, this means that we dont get to see enough of him in his natural position. He was really good v kerry despite not having a brilliant game. He was very good as well yesterday by all accounts. I saw him v Cork and he was awesome that day.

Come back to us in a couple of years with this question and we can examine this topic when he has his best years played.

Murphy is comfortably in the top 2 or 3 players in the country.
He would grace any team and is underrated if anything.
Would love to have him in Mayo.

Murphy is without doubt the finest player in the game today. Others may be outstanding in their own positions but he is superb in a whole range of positions. He takes loads of abuse in a game but gets on with driving Donegal forward with little of the whining we get from other 'stars'. He is a pleasure to watch but must be a nightmare to mark.

Yesterday we marked Michael Murphy as well as we possibly could yet we still couldn't stop him from scoring from play or influencing the Donegal comeback 2nd half that for me is the sign of a great player. We twice held C O Connor Mayo scoreless from play in the championship and C McManus was held scoreless from play in Kiltoom back in Jan until we gifted him a goal in injury time.

I don't believe he's overrated either, I'm afraid. He's just so versatile and possesses such skill as well as strength. I think he's one of a handful of players that would make any team in the country.

he is not overrated but he has become very physical and I can see him sent off in most games this year with a Blackcard or two yellows.

Actually yeah. He is over rated. Just thought about it for a while. That is why he scores at least 5 points in every game, and is double marked in every game.

Look, this is a ridiculous thread. If he is over rated, what does it take to become rated? A player being under rated would be a more interesting thread and one with many valid points. This is just weirdness.

Christ we need to get to the championship quickly so these off-season filler threads can be cleaned out

No way he a class act any team would want him. I think he tries to do to much for Donegal defend, win ball in midfield, kick points from play and frees.

I'd love to get Murphy onto the Dublin team and stick him in FF...

Players of the ability of Fenton, Flynn, Connolly, Kilkenny, McMahon, Cooper, McCarthy... Looking to pick him out

I suppose that will be the problem for Murphy.
He is the best Full Forward in Ireland easily I believe but people dont get to see it so while people see how important he is to Donegal its hard to put him as one of the greatest.

The best thing about him is that he is finally fit after a few years playing at 60%. He was still good but so far this year I feel he is really looking fit and well. If we can work out the tactics then we are onto something

I'd love for people to see him in an open 15 v 15 match at full forward, say a Railway Cup final where both teams were really going at it.

If Michael Murphy is over rated then we as a county may completely fold and quit the GAA because the guy is class .

For me Michael Murphy is by a mile the best footballer our county has ever produced .

Ps : great guy away from the pitch too as are most of our stars .
