James O'Donoghue the best forward since Mikey Sheehy...

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Matt Connor was better than Mikey Sheehy. James O Donohoe is very young yet .

Good player, but when i look at sheehy , spillane, geraghty, Giles, none of them would dive or feign injury to get a lad sent off.

Im afraid his play acting, diving, sneering and general unsporting behaviour leaves me with a disliking of the lad.

Right a couple of poster on here have casually dropped in these accusations about O'Donoghue in this discussion.

Can I ask these keyboard warriors to provide concrete evidence of his 'unsporting behaviour'??

Is this all based on the fact he was awarded a penalty in the drawn game a couple of weeks ago?

Seriously, some people on here really need to drop the whole 'lets have a cut at the Kerry team and players at every opportunity'.

Its getting ridiculous on here with 6-7 negative threads posted up after any Kerry game so far this summer.

Hermit, that was my piece you posted there.First of all,i have said many times how much respect i have for Kerry.Great people, great county with the richest footballing tradition and pedigree.I enjoyed watching all the greats like M Sheehy,Bomber Liston,Oggie Moran,Jack O Shea,The O Se clan,D O Cinneide,Gooch & D O Sullivan(my personnel favourite).Maybe other posters are anti-Kerry.I cannot say.But im not.I am no WUM.Have nothing against any county.
However,i do not like Donaghy or James O Donoghue.I have admitted as much before.Nothing personnel obviously.Donaghy is possibly thee biggest talker ive ever seen play football. He never stops.I saw him mouthing off to R O Carroll non stop in 2011 final. It was relentless. As for O Donoghue,i have seen him win many soft and dubious frees. He goes down very easily and is fast gaining a reputation as a diver.Brolly has commented on this.Ive also seen him sneer into opposing defenders faces and goad them after scoring or winning a free.I cannot recall specific incidents but there has been quite a few.He just rubs me up the wrong way.I dont like the cut of his jib,so to speak.Im sure most posters have players that grind their gears, for whatever reason.Well O Donoghue is mine.Unfortunately for me,he happens to be a great player so im going to have to endure quite a bit of pain watching this young whippersnapper over the coming years.Or maybe he will clean up his act and convert me into idolising him.Perish the thought.

JOD is real deal. Would have him ahead of Colm O'Neill, Bernard Brogan and Conor McManus

TheHermit..... You seem to have a lot of cuts at the Dublin team and players all the time.

Personally I think J'. O'D is an excellent forward, he does however fall over a bit. But has good movement and a good left boot.

I don't think he's developed enough to be considered the best forward in the game. If Michael Murphy played as an out and out forward I don't think O'Donaghue gets near him. McManus is far more efficient, that guys a Rolls Royce. And Diarmuid Connolly is probably the best player about at present. He's poetry in motion. Two excellent feet, quick across the ground and extremely skillful.

But there's development left in J. O'D which means he can get better and no doubt will as he's young. But at present he's not quite there.

Some funny or strange posts here, yes James is good, in fact very good is not in the same league as Mikey, Bomber, John Egan, Mossy Fitz yet.. and yes I mean yet because he is getting there, I think his maturity from 2012 to last year when he had to really step it up in Coopers absence says it all... he is the real deal and getting better... and despite all the begrudgers every single poster here if were being honest would sell their mother to have him playing in their county team... and if they say no... well they are just ignorant or well just lying

JayP, I never had any 'cut' at any specific Dublin player. Bar the fact Kevin Mac could have walked half way across Ireland with the amount of steps he took for a certain goal that sunk Kerry ;)

As for the Dublin team, my only issue with them is how many people seem to regard them as the All Ireland champions already. Based on nothing.

That's despite the fact the current All Ireland champions have been far more tested, have improved game on game and are sitting pretty in a Q-final.

I strongly suspect that what's behind such comments is that these people's don't respect Kerry's All Ireland victory last year (which was an incredible achievement). All you have to do is look at the amount of people on here that claim the ref won it for us or that it was all down to Durcan's mistake.

Jayp, I'm a Kerryman, no Kerry person or player would ever think that another county is/was or ever will be better than what we are capable of.

Cuederocket, Donaghy and JOD are townies, they have that swagger and arrogance on the field about them and yes, Star in particular is mouthy. But he was a basket baller its part of that game just as it is part of cricket.

Is he really saying anything of consequence or anything malicious, I've never heard and I've been close to the pitch when his played dozens of times. Most of the time his encouraging his fellow forwards, its a leadership role which many people in the Kerry camp committed on when he was appointed captain.

I honestly don't think JOD sneers at the opposition or goes down any easier than any other forward and I wouldn't give a fig for what Joe Brolly had to say about anything.

It's too early in his career yet.. so far I don't think he is in Sheehy's class, he looks lively on the pitch and is accurate when shooting under pressure. He needs to get more scores. There is no question that he does go down very easily and takes plenty of steps, but all forwards do that to get scores.

Matt Connor, John Galvin... etc. Plenty big fish in the shallow pools too.

His antics have turned many against him and I'd include myself in that. I have little time for players that dive or feign injury and I've absolutely no time for top players who do it.

He is a great goal scorer and is very effective for that reason. But I'd put McManus above him as the most talented scoring forward out there. Gooch held it for a long time, Brogan did too for a while but they are falling back.

Connolly is by far the most talented all round forward in Ireland at the minute. Entering his prime he has the potential to be a great.

Not as good as Conor MC Manus , and what about D Connolly plus Tyrone in my book had one of the best forwards ever --- Stephen o Neill --- only for injuries.
But at present if you had to pick either MC manus or O Donoghue who would people pick --- I would have McManus

plike, Matt Connor a big fish in a shallow pool ? Matt Connor was and remains the best of them all . And remember it was all over for him at 24. He was unstoppable .

It's hard to compare players from different eras , I mean Mikey Sheehy and Matt Connor hadn't to deal wit mass defences ,once they won the ball all they had to do was beat their man and a score was on, plus fellas were tougher back in those days you'd be ashamed to show any1 you were hurt.

Google the 1982 final and watch the first half point where Matt Connor in a very tight space loses three Kerry defenders and scores . He would have dealt with packed defences .

Make no mistake, Matt would have excelled in any era, was as good or better than anyone I've ever seen. Who at the top level scores freely anymore?

Hang on lads your having a go at him for diving and play acting ? Sure every player in Gaelic Football is at that now you'd swear he's the only one, JOD is the best comer forward in the game right now the man is class yes he dives and play acts but so does every other player in the competition.
