Kerry playing puke football ?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Donegal can play attacking football as well as they showed against Dublin. Saying that you have to beat puke with puke is very disingenuous to them. Donegal were arguably the more attacking team in that game. They scored 12 scores against Kerry's 11. They were one inch from equalizing and possibly only lost due to one bad mistake by a goalkeeper. People are very quick to stick the boot in.

Kerry did what they had to do to win, they did it and I would NEVER condemn them for that. Sport at the top level is all about competing to WIN and they WON using these tactics so well done to them. I think it was the great US football coach Vince Lombardi who said 'Show me a good loser and I will show you a......LOSER', While I wouldn't point the finger at Kerry I would call out the two faced hypocrites who say Kerry never play negatively, cynically or in an unsporting manner at times. They showed today and over the past decade or so that they are masters of all these and employ whatever tactics they need to win. Furthermore different sports are all about different styles and that's what makes them all interesting and great to watch. I look forward to the GAA purists in Kerry and the media who have engaged in a negative stereotypical war against Ulster teams now have their say on Kerry's tactics today. I suspect they will be struck dumb as they were after the Mayo game when Kerry also indulged in some awful pulling, dragging and dirty hits. As I say I don't blame Kerry for this JUST don't play us all for fools.

"Sometimes you have to meet fire with fire or puke with puke."

"You've got to play puke against puke."

So "puke" football is the way forward and every county should practice and play it? Because all other ways of playing football are futile if up against "puke" football.

-------
Yes that's it. Have you got evidence to the contrary? It is more effective to play puke against puke than to attempt to play a more open system. Brolly was saying that this type of football is 'infesting Ulster' and that Kerry's adoption of it is effectively an endorsement. If he's correct then God help us is all I can say! Still some people apparently find this stuff 'intriguing'.

That would have entailed a replay. There is a God in heaven!

Kerry played the way they had to play in fairness and its relief all round that the masters of 'the puke system' did not win! But it is unfortunately an All Ireland that is fading from memory as we speak!

this will be the first year in a long time that all Ireland finalists do not dominate all-stars. Like watching rugby league.Hope mayo continue to play real football

The top counties will all hope Mayo continue to play the way they have been playing over the last few years.

One less team to worry about.

As for the All Stars, don't fool yourself.

Terrible to see that Tyrone player kicking the ball away from the Goalkeeper at the end. And Armagh playing 13 players in their own half. Awful Ulster Championship.

Indeed Tyrone I think I will ring Joe Duffy tomorrow. I am disgusted at those Tyrone/Armagh types continually ruining our All Ireland day with their Nordieness and pukey football. Tis a disgrace altogether now!

I recall the 2009 All Ireland final, where Cork got a great start but Kerry gradually got on top, built up a handy lead, and were happy to keep most of the team behind the ball in the second half while Cork handpassed the ball ad nauseum back-and-forth. Cork could have played til midnight that day but just didn't have the guile to break Kerry down. It was absolutely the correct tactic for Kerry to adopt that day; they had done the hard part in reeling Cork in and going in front, and then realised that the Cork team they were playing, while athletic and powerful, didn't have the capability to unlock a packed defence. So playing defensively in All-Ireland finals is not new to Kerry - but hey, they've put on enough exhibitions in All-Ireland finals and have still attracted a lot of begrudgery, so they have no obligation to please the neutrals.

Let's not forget Kennelly's attempt to decapitate Nichoals Murphy in the first minute in that final also!

Listen behind all the Yerra Yerra's Kerry are the most pragmatic team in the country. They will do what needs to be done to win games and that's the long and the short of it.

You gotta love Brolly... lol

Some valid points there though... especially the High Horse bit... ;o)
"Well done Kerry, but you can get off your high horse now. Maybe it's only puke football if someone else is playing it."

Yes we played puke to win, we were never going to beat a top quality puke team like Donegal by playing champagne football.

It's just a pity Joe wasn't in the studio on the Sunday Game listening to Spillane's nonsense summing up of the Kerry team and performance.

I would have paid to be there then....

Pat's lack of humility would have been torn to shreds me thinks... :o)

And still we have ones trying to tell us that it was only because it was Donegal that Kerry were playing that they played Puke football. Ah delusions of grandeur.

Lads give it a rest.

You have got to credit kerry for doing what it takes to win, and that is fair enough. I would agree that it is an all ireland that wont be shown anywhere as an add for the game.

The big question is can either team play outside of this system?
On the evidence of this year, Kerry did it v mayo in game 2, v cork but only because cork rolled over after 5 minutes.

I think that spillane should be careful about who he accuses of playing puke football. It was gas on sunday listening to him.
But all in all, a win is a win and the best of luck to kerry. They will be back next year, and it has been a very good education in football tactics watching them last sunday.

Joe Brolly seems to have a big chip on his shoulder about Kerry. He never misses a chance to bash Kerry, Colm Cooper, Dr. Crokes, or any other Kerry related topic. He can say what he likes but here's the low-down, if Kerry had played like Dublin against Donegal in the final, Kerry would probably have lost to Donegal's "system". Instead Kerry played Donegal at their own game and tactically beat them. The game was not a classic game to watch but now Kerry, along with everyone else, know how to defeat the "system". I'm sure that if Dublin had played Donegal at their own game too then they would have beaten Donegal because Dublin have better, more skillful and natural footballers. Joe Brolly can say what he likes but Kerry did what they had to do. When Donegal win games using this defensive style it's a case of "Jim's winning matches" and JMcG is brilliant and when Kerry do it it's terrible stuff. Any tactical approach to any sport is there to be out-thought and outmaneuvered. This is what happened here. Now I'm hoping that now that the system has been exposed that this type of tactical game will quietly go away. Forever.
