Either way, McCarthy is up there with Jack O'Shea, and that's saying something!! realdub (Dublin) - Posts: 8746 - 02/07/2023 19:59:49 2491527 Link 7 |
I think Jack would be the first to admit it too

Some performance by the Dubs, we are heading for the final everyone wants to see I suppose if the semi finals go as everyone really thinks, Dublin v Kerry. but take nothing for granted yet. Tirchonaill1 (Donegal) - Posts: 3180 - 02/07/2023 20:54:27 2491560 Link 2 |
Congratulations on today Dublin you were well deserved winners. The only down side today for you was we Mayo didn't give you a harder challenge that would help you in the future. You came out with determination and fight. You will need to eliminate the mistakes that we didn't capitalize on to add to your tally of Sam's. Good luck going forward. cluichethar (Mayo) - Posts: 521 - 02/07/2023 21:00:12 2491566 Link 3 |
I don't want to see a D/KY Final.....but that's what it will be.

Why not best two teams in the country ? Far better than the nonsense we've been watching all year ! rossy15 (Roscommon) - Posts: 644 - 02/07/2023 22:03:42 2491587 Link 0 |
James Mccarthy for sure is one of the best footballers I have seen play. Versatile strong pacey and a great reader of the game.

New and different teams, variety is what's needed. Dublin and Kerry have won about 15 of the last 20 AIs. Seanfanbocht (Roscommon) - Posts: 2288 - 02/07/2023 22:22:56 2491596 Link 0 |
I think you could be on to something there. Maybe when a county wins they could be excluded for 32 years so everybody has a chance of winning! Yep! Maybe implement it at primary school level to begin with! Everybody's a winner! Tell you what! You lobby the Rossie board with that and get it to Congress! we're all behind you!

We'd all love to see new and different teams they're not there ! Best two teams in the country r Kerry and Dublin bar a catastrophe they'll b n the all Ireland final and to be honest I'd take a good competitive all Ireland final with them too versus a random team getting there and getting hammered !

Well done, Dublin. I liked how ye kicked the ball a lot; fast, direct ball into attach which has massive skill n ability. Also, Cluxo being back is like building a stone wall across the goals. He brings so belief and confidence to the team. Where now are all those who said his comeback was a mistake??? foreveryoung (USA) - Posts: 2202 - 03/07/2023 03:34:19 2491629 Link 1 |
I guess it's nothing against Dublin or Kerry, 2 very good teams; I imagine he means a final comprising *any* 2 teams out of the other 30 counties. Dublin / Kerry is the GAA equivalent of Celtic / Rangers. However, since so many neutrals will have Dublin v Kerry as their "ideal" final, you can see for yourself how little desire for real change there is in the GAA. If the GAA was serious about having a healthy competition, there'd be a real drive to get teams outside the top 6 up to standard. But there isn't, because they GAA is happy with a competition that will never be won by most teams taking part in it.

Not saying you don't have a point but 12 of the 16 teams in the competition this year have at some stage won Sam. Now I know there were not 12 real contenders, but would there be maybe 8 that believed they had some chance. 7 different counties have won Sam since 2000, not bad despite the emergence of the record breaking Dublin team (same as the number of clubs that have won the premier league) sligo joe (Dublin) - Posts: 882 - 03/07/2023 10:09:57 2491683 Link 0 |
Yeah Jack in his pomp was a bit before my time, my first year going to games was 1989 and I still remember the pain getting hammered by Tyrone in the Ulster final replay (one of the many reasons I don't like our neighbours!). My Dad talked about Jack O'Shea a lot and have seen all the clips and GAA Gold replays of course but even at that I wouldn't have seen him anywhere near as much as the modern footballers for obvious reasons! I suppose talking about McCarthy is recency bias but I've watched a lot of football in 34 years now and I've seen him so often in the flesh, he's just a force of nature and the scores he can take as well would tell me he'd be more than handy in at full forward too. Like I remember him scoring a ridiculous point from under the Hogan, I think against Mayo in one of those finals? And it'd be a score that we would all be waxing lyrical about for years if it had been Maurice Fitz, or Clifford, or Diarmuid Connolly or whoever. But he wears 5 or 6 or 8 on his back so it's not in the annals of ridiculous scores at Croke Park. And then just his general performances, the display he put on in last years defeat to Kerry is one of the best individual performances I've ever seen. I'll be giving away the time I really started watching a lot of football but he reminds me of Tohill or our own Molloy in terms of just taking a game on himself and being a pure force in that middle third, DJ Kane as a leader and footballer, the likes of Martin O'Connell in Meath as well, but as much as I admired those players growing up, McCarthy I think is all of their best qualities put together. Obviously it's an embarrassment of riches from that 6-in-a-row side but McCarthy is a cut above the rest in my opinion and he's in rare company if we're debating between him and Jack! Huge fan of Fitzsimons too and sure what else can you say about Cluxton. CCFabu (Donegal) - Posts: 163 - 03/07/2023 10:15:26 2491686 Link 2 |
I actually agree, we've seen the greatest team of all team absolutely dominate a decade but still have a decent spread of winners. I also think that Tyrone winning in 2021 lit a bit of a fire in teams - yes the quarters were disappointing but I think there's no doubt that if you have your house in order and timing goes right for you, any of the top 8-10 have a chance at winning it all. Some of those teams would need a pile of luck to go with it, but I still think going in to next year Dublin, Kerry, Galway, Derry should all be contenders, with the likes of Mayo and Tyrone serious outfits if things are sorted off the pitch (for Tyrone especially). Roscommon will be looking at Monaghan in the semi final sick to their stomach at how their season has gone, both with a real shot of going the distance if things next year fall their way in terms of injuries and the draw.. Cork and Kildare if they can build on their seasons this year and have some consistency will be sticky for any team and can take big scalps. Armagh are streaky in my opinion but if they become consistent they are obviously extremely formidable too. And even ourselves in Donegal, if things go well off the pitch over the next while we have plenty of talent in spite of what some may say or believe. With Down and Meath hopefully building on their Tailteann runs this year as well, I honestly think the championship is in good shape in terms of competitiveness. Westmeath were hugely competitive in their group too - I honestly think the competitive element is in good shape in Gaelic football CCFabu (Donegal) - Posts: 163 - 03/07/2023 11:32:47 2491734 Link 1 |
Nothing major won yet…. Dublin would win Leinster without a goalkeeper… It's not proven yet that it wasn't a mistake…!
