Their fitness is massive. They obviously have scoring power in the forwards with Dessie, Walsh and Gallagher but they run from everywhere. They will have Cooke or Maloney on the ball around the middle and then have Paul Kelly, Mulcahy, Maughan flying off the shoulder. If you are playing against them you better have forwards that can run and track back at pace. It's very hard to stop, especially in Pearse Stadium because they make full use of the width of the pitch. They look better physically than they did last year and that's with Sean Kelly to come back.

Salthill a bit of a non jigger in Tuam here I reckon. John Maher sitting in the stand, not injured but just sitting the game out. Finnerty obviously in America and they have made some strange decisions on the sideline as if they aren't too interested in this one. Corofin haven't had to do much to be well ahead, three goals have come from three errors. Liam Silke going well. galway19 (Galway) - Posts: 514 - 29/07/2023 17:21:01 2497610 Link 0 |
I think Annaghdown only scored once from play, a goal. ref (Galway) - Posts: 244 - 29/07/2023 18:52:17 2497620 Link 0 |
Comfortable stuff for Mountbellew without doing anything outrageous. Nice interplay between Barrett and McHugh for the goal. They were without Eoin Finnerty and Michael Daly who were togged but on the bench while Patrick Kelly was doing water carrier so a fair few of the main lads to come in yet. Clare Galway tried hard but a lot of their team is too light when they come up against the better teams. galway19 (Galway) - Posts: 514 - 29/07/2023 19:26:18 2497623 Link 1 |
Not too surprising given that 9 of them trained with county for most of the year..

I was very enthusiastic about the senior championship this year but the first weekend was a bit of a damp squib. Hopefully it improves but quality and scoring stats were very poor. 12 of 16 teams registered 12 points or less. St Michael's 14 . The big 3 registered 22, 19 and 17 which supports the view that we won't see a dark horse coming through the pack this year. The only other thing I would say about the weekend is that anyone who was in tuam stadium yesterday could not argue the point that I have made several times...dropping Barry McHugh was insanity. anotheralias (Galway) - Posts: 792 - 30/07/2023 15:28:17 2497708 Link 0 |

Any news on this? He was on OTB friday night as a GAA coach no talk about Galway next season. It seemed a bit like a promotional piece for him.

Lots of rumours etc around all management etc..nothing will be decided in the next few weeks.. Jobs up for minor and under 20s so I'm hoping Savo will put his name in for that, doing good work with u 16s this year.. Great to see Liam Silke and kieren molloy back playing, hopefully next year we will have more luck on the injury front... Belclare (Galway) - Posts: 904 - 30/07/2023 18:54:15 2497797 Link 1 |

It was disgraceful the way the members of the great Galway senior football team, All Ireland winners of 1998, (and indeed the Offaly hurling team the last day) were treated so shabbily and disrespectfully by the GAA in Croke Park today at their 25th anniversary celebrations. It was easy to see that this was just an afterthought and a shameful way to "honour" these heroes of the GAA who brought so much joy to Galway people and to gaelic football lovers everywhere back in the 1998 - 2001 era. To be marched out in front of a near empty stadium was insulting to players who gave so much to the game. If the GAA are not prepared to organise the ceremony properly and in a way that does justice to the occasion, then it would be better to scrap it altogether rather than continue this half-hearted charade. 100% agree. It was a disgrace and not for the first time either.

Football wise McHugh might be a loss from Galway. He could have been dropped for other reasons.

Last week on Galway bay fm there is a piece with Ray Silke (it is on their social media page) previewing a club championship game and he is asked about it and he explains that apparently the majority of county boards wanted it this way as it gives the jubilee team longer on the pitch and gives the opportunity to show video clips. Personally I think it wrong but clubs do have a habit of voting for county board executives, we should all drop into our club agm's and put in a motion to change it and it can then go to the county board and we might get it changed for 2026.

That's a dangerous statement to make, as the reader is led in to believe that you have information that suggests that there were "other reasons" and this reflects poorly on the individual. Yes of course like any decision made by management there could be non footballing reasons, but I havent heard you or anyone else, suggest that this was the reason that Cathal Sweeney didnt start latter games. Was there other reasons why John Maher or Robert Finnerty didnt start games. Were there other reasons why Bernie Power didnt start. Now please please dont let anyone interpret the above statements by myself as being that any of the above decisions were made for anything other than footballing reasons, but I am using these as examples to illustrate that it is dangerous to single out a player. My understanding and belief is that Barry McHugh was dropped off the panel for purely footballing reasons and lets not try to defend what is, in my opinion, a very poor footballing decision made by management and one that we paid a big price for. Throwing out an insinuation that it was a non footballing based decision is a) giving management a cop out that they dont deserve and b) giving the player in question dis-credit that he does not deserve. anotheralias (Galway) - Posts: 792 - 31/07/2023 10:55:15 2497950 Link 1 |
We're not very far off.. Pj confirmed to be staying on for 24.. Key is to freshen up back room team... We do need a young forward to really shine in the club championship, and keep injury free.. Belclare (Galway) - Posts: 904 - 31/07/2023 11:08:56 2497958 Link 0 |
I see Galway looking for new minor and under 20 management for next year need get these appointments right as it prob be a 3, year ,, I'd say both appointments will either be ex county player or a teacher it seems that the usual way in Galway not all of tome but majority Kickitout (Galway) - Posts: 762 - 31/07/2023 11:53:44 2497984 Link 0 |
