I'd still have hope for Wexford but any chance of winning the All Ireland is fantasy. A leinster isn't beyond the realms of possibility . There is a good player base and Leinster is relatively weak right now. bloodyban (Limerick) - Posts: 1710 - 31/03/2022 18:29:33 2408754 Link 0 |
I think your assessment in spot on. I think most posters on here are realistic about how far Wexford senior hurlers can go in the Championship this year. There is a rebuilding plan in place, with a widening of the panel and a new game plan under a new manager. Things went well in the league until last weekend. As some other poster asked the question ... how will Wexford do on fast ground against fast runners? That's a question that we don't know full what the answer is to yet. Waterford asked a lot of tough questions last weekend and we didn't have the answers. The next 8 weeks will tell us those answers. A Leinster title is a realistic target if we get all our ducks in a row. Having said that, it is a realistic target for Kilkenny, Galway and Dublin too because there's only a puck of a ball between those teams. On a slightly worrying note for Limerick, there is an outside chance both Cork and Waterford could view their games with Limerick as their main target game in the championship. However Limerick look like they are primed for peaking in May/June/July. Both Waterford and Cork look like they are ahead of Limerick in the preparation. Many great teams have not been able to do 3 in a row ... even when you are the best team in the country. My pecking order is 1. Limerick, 2. Waterford and 3. Cork. I wonder is there a chance Limerick could get caught cold? Punter72007 (Wexford) - Posts: 318 - 01/04/2022 10:45:39 2408797 Link 1 |
I'm not saying anything bad about Ballygunner. Only that in terms of player numbers they are a modern day super club. It's a shorter drive from Cheekpoint to Ballygunner than Passage so I wouldnt blame any parent bringing their kids there. I'm just making the point that countyman wasnt wrong in what he was saying as regards Ballygunner getting lads from all over the city or rural parishes which dont have clubs.

I've many friends who are what polite lads would call blunt or ignorant. That's just their way. I just accept people the way they are. I can be short sometimes myself. It doesnt make them bad people or mean that their opinions are any less valid. And often times it's better to have lads around you who are straight to the point. Since he started posting while I dont agree with all his opinions I think hes a knowledgeable and well informed enough fella and hes entitled to draw his own conclusions from the knowledge and experience he has.

I've supported Limerick in the Munster championship since the early 90s and from their point of view they would be better having 3rd place sewn up before going to Ennis because otherwise theres every chance they wont have any hurling games to play when they peak.

Agree we will do well to get out of Leinster as its not strong at the omens but that's about it anything else is bonus territory.

I've said for a while there's little to separate the main 4 teams in leinster championship, we're hoping last Sunday won't rattle the confidence too much, personally I'd see Limerick as favorites for AL, Waterford 2nd, Cork 3rd and you could but a blanket over the next 5-6 teams.

Ballyhale never "swallowed up" Knockthopher. In the early 1970's the two clubs in the parish (Ballyhale and Knocktopher) were both facing extinction. Because of the situation facing both clubs they decided to amalgamate in 1972 under the new name of Ballyhale Shamrocks. The club adopted as its logo a three-leaf shamrock with the letters K, B and K, representing the three clubs that had existed in the parish (the third club was Knockmoylan that had ceased to exist in 1959). Any point made by him is not to be factual and only jus based on one thing. Your opinion is to contribute to the conversation and factual about their numbers. It is wrong about they getting getting players from all over rurual parishes and the city. I would like to see a list of all these players who are not in their catchment area. Actually other clubs have more. Go up the town and see who could be playing for Mount Sion or De La Salle. Roanmore and St. Saviours spill over into each other. Like Dublin my belief is that it is only seems to bother people (not you) when the team is successful. I would like to see the gunners beaten but only because there was a better team in the county. At the end of the day Ballsaggart with 300 people have three players on the county panel. Lismore three and Ballygunner four. Numbers help but in itself is not going to guarantee success. Yes I had forgotten Knockmoylan. Yes amalgamated and not questioning the reasoning or trying to bash them. They are a fine club and team that has achieved unbridled success. The physical area the club covers from Mullinavat or Lukes Well up to not sure how far they pick is a good size but not nearly as populated as the Ballygunner pick which I think maybe close over 20,000 now.

Ballyhale are the perfect proof of that. I suppose over the Barrow here most of the clubs have players who are based in their own parish or are from it and commute back to play but are living/working elsewhere. Town seems to have more inter club transfers but mostly players here play for the parish they were born and/or raised in.

You can my remotely compare Ballyhale and Ballygunnar. Ballyhale don't have a big pick, they might have a few small townlands but I have seen situations where they can barely scrap an under 14 or under 16 team together. They've won very few feiles. They put a massive emphasis on developing their players between the age of 17 and 21 and it pays off. Past hurler (None) - Posts: 970 - 01/04/2022 17:46:49 2408957 Link 0 |

Viking66 a lot of it just nonsense by people who don't know what they are talking about. Half the present Ballygunner team are related Mahonys and Sullivans and then O'Keeff's . Born and raised in Ballygunner and the Dunmore road.. Dessie Hutchison's grandfather is from Fenor and his daughter married in the Ballygunner area. Dessie senior played for Fenor. Dessie technically could be a Passage player also. Ballygunner do not have all the choices in the area. Waterpark rugby strong as can be seen from the representation for Munster. Waterford city rugby and plenty of soccer presence. I think gunners would be low on the totem pole when it comes to outsiders.
