2022 Wexford Intercounty Hurling

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Another good win yesterday . Players like McGuckian , Oisin Foley , Flood and Dwyer are getting invaluable playing time which will only improve our squad . Nice crowd down from Wexford at the game too. Free taking is an issue . Jacko was good from play but we need Chin with his 2019 form when he returns . 2 huge tests coming up over the next month against Galway and Cork. The aim should be to win one and we should reach a league semi final .

Anybody else think Wexford aren't getting enough credit on the RTE highlights programme for two good wins?

All the talk last week was about how Limerick are just limbering up and how "different counties are at different stages of development".

Then last night, it was all about how Clare were missing Tony Kelly and others, but no mention of how we were missing Lee Chin, Kevin Foley, Shaun Murphy, and Gavin Bailey - i.e. our captain, vice captain, and two other key players from last year.

Davy got in a nice dig at his old mate Lohan, all the same. "That's two years in a row now they've gone down there and got a result," sez he....

Add in Shane Reck who was the biggest positive of years championship hasn't figured yet, he marshalled Tony Kelly as well as anyone in the last 2 years and Conor Devitt who was arguably our most consistent player in the 3 Walsh cup games.

We'll keep letting everyone underestimate us Pikeman. Have to say Rory O Connor was a joy to watch yesterday . As good as any hurler in the country when on form. I have been a critic of Hanlon in the past but he has really impressed me this year. Listening to The Hurling Podcast Harry Kehoe admitted he is a nightmare to mark. He looks really fit this year . Also I thought Mikie Dwyer is really going to prosper once the hard ground comes in championship he might be a real asset .

All very muted in their praise but I'd be happy that we're not being talked up . All that could change over the next month if results go our way against Galway and cork.

Yes pikeman but it's a good thing keep things low key. Keep building and keep working hard.

Not many counties have won twice in a row in Ennis the last few years. I know it was only the League and I know both of us were missing 3 or 4 regular starters including key men but they were the sort of games we were losing up until 5 years ago.

Quite happy to be under the radar.

I'd hate if they were bigging us up

I do agree though.

The analysts spent their time making excuses for the opposition

Taking Egan as his word positive news on the few injuries.

Yeah, I suppose we wouldn't want them shouting our praises from the rooftops either. But still, it's almost like they begrudge us a couple of victories. Even an acknowledgement along the lines of "but fair play to Wexford, they adapted better to the conditions and made the most of the personnel available" wouldn't be out of place.

Apart from Shaun Murphy obviously, Egan's impresses me even in his media dealings, his quotes about Murphy just show a person with there head screwed on about things even outside of hurling.

Heartwarming to get 2 wins in 2 weeks against munster teams. It's very early days yet but certainly Egan has them playing the way they want to play. Long ball, diagonal ball, short ball. Hustling, hard tackling, every lad fighting for everything as if there lives depended on it. By no means perfect but you can sense that the whole panel are buying in to the new system. It was great to see Rory back again. He was on fire yesterday. I think the Galway and Cork games will be really tough but the confidence gained from the last 2 matches we should be there or thereabouts. With the likes of mcguician, Oisin Foley, Dwyer and Devitt blending in nicely and with Chin and Kevin Foley to return soon ((hopefully) the future looks much brighter than it has been since 2019.

I think it's a good thing that we are not getting praised too much because we are a work in progress.

I was delighted with the win - great attitude and work rate again. Exactly what you want to see.

I think a word of caution needs to be said ... we did struggle in the second half.
As we integrate new players back in, it takes time to settle them all into a rhythm and style of play.
I agree with the sentiment here on this discussion forum, in that, what I want to see in the remaining games in the league is the same work-rate/hunger/attitude and also the continuing emergence of a style of play.
I like the way Wexford are playing, a mixture of long and short. The challenge is playing heads up hurling, making a decision which ball to play.
That takes time to develop and this Wexford team are making great strides and bedding this is in well.
As others have said, even a loss to Galway/Cork and I'd still be happy, if there was still the same work-rate/attitude and clear development of a style of play.

Overall great job so far by everybody involved with this team. Well done all.

Hard to believe St Kierans are back in the competition now also as Dublin School cannot compete in the All Ireland so Kilkenny CBS and St Kierans played off to get back in as Leinsters second representatives

Wouldn't even mind that. Just be interesting to see if they will be able to stay with the mighty men of the Harty..........

It will. Though I dont think it helps the development of hurling in general that combined schools arent allowed to compete in the biggest competition.

Yeah it's utter madness that a team is allowed to compete for provincial honours and not allowed to go any further. If I'm not mistaken Dublin north beat Kieran's a few years ago to win Leinster and couldn't compete in the all Ireland series. Kieran's won the all Ireland
