I enjoy the variety myself, the posters I've no time for are those who had the knives out this time last week and our either MIA or giving a token sentence now after Sunday.

And widening this idea further ... if some of those senior Limerick hurlers were good enough athletes for rugby (and they look like they could have been), then this development of these players was done 10-15 years ago. What's impressive by Limerick GAA is that they did this work 10-15 years ago when Munster rugby was at it's most popular and compared to now, Limerick hurling wouldn't have been as popular. Just shows what hard work was put in at grassroots and getting the right structures in place. (and I know having a JP helps too! :) ) Fair play to Limerick and credit to them. Followed by Kilkenny v Tipperary. Few cold beers in front of my warm Fire for a super Sunday! Past hurler (None) - Posts: 970 - 08/02/2022 18:02:59 2399387 Link 0 |
Sad to hear of the passing of Seamus Barron. Going off interviews from Liam Griffin, he seemed to be ahead of his time and was clued into how important stats and analysis would become down the line. I didn't know though that he won an AI as a player at under-21 and senior (as an unused sub). beano (Wexford) - Posts: 1500 - 08/02/2022 18:15:19 2399390 Link 1 |
I don't think O'Hanlon is nailed down for corner back for the year, I'd say his position will change for the opposition, if there's a big physical man to shut down that's his role, so far this year he played at 3 v Tipp, 7 vs KK and at 4 the last 2 weeks, done well in 3 games and the FB line was hung out to dry v Dublin with our set up.

Punter. There was a two page spread in The Independent .about six months ago, with the Munster Rugby crowd whinging about the effect the upsurge in Limerick hurling seems to be having on Munster rugby. I think it is all nonsense as the only Limerick panelist that I know of that has any rugby playing relative is Paddy O'Loughlin, whose Grandfather Dave played with Ireland, but was, at least I think, a Charleville (Cork) man. Maybe the real reason so few Limerick men are on the Munster team is that so many of their players are sourced from abroad. We have lost a few very promising hurlers to rugby like Conor Murray and the Fitzgeralds, sons of Danny, the late dual player Danny.

You always got a few from the rural areas, of Kerry, Tipp, Limerick and Cork and we now have O'Donoghue, a Waterford man.

In fairness Hegarty father, even today, is still a huge man. Gearoid is a second cousin to the Galvins of Clare and Jake Morrison of Tipp, on his dad's side, and they are are all big men too. Remember that the great Wexford team of the fifties and the equally good Limerick of the thirties were always talked of as being huge men as well. I saw members of both teams close up in later life and even at that time many of them were imposing specimens indeed.

Which kind of bears out my point. I thought some of them were on the basis that 'a dog was given a bad name'. I am glad to see some one else feels the same as I did.

But should provocation be an absolutely accepted part of the game? Some years back a certain player, not a Wexford man, was clearly highlighted dragging Barry Murphy by the testicles, yet nothing was done about it. In fact it was almost treated with levity, by the panel. on the Sunday game that night. The fact is this of conduct has gone on for years, on the part of Full back especially, and often under the eyes of oblivious umpires. I saw Stephen Kelly being dragged and hauled all day by Tomas O'Shea in the 2010 Munster Final. It was clear he was doing it because he knew the ref would do nothing about it. Almost providentially, it came back to haunt Kerry as O'Shea was suspended by the Central Council after the game and an O'Shea less Kerry were dethroned as All Ireland Champions by a very average Down team. By the way when was the third occasion Gullane slapped back on a player. As another Wexford Poster has said here, a few of Liam Dunne's dismissals were indeed very questionable. Yes indeed Wexico. Your boys completely refused to be overawed by the size of Limerick and tore into with abandon and to great effect- fair play to them.

Thanks Punter. I know this period of Limerick dominance will be over soon enough. When that day comes I hope that their example will lead to other members of the chasing pack replacing them at the top. I feel that Galway have the material to win All Irelands and Waterford and Wexford are other serious contenders. We do not want to to return to the days when the Big Three won 15 out of 16 All Irelands

Yeah I am fairly certain it will be a horses for courses set-up with him. As it has been the last few years when he has generally being the designated "shut-down" defender, and has curtailed no lesser men than TJ and Joe. I think we will make sure that if Matt is occupied with his duties, that we will have a player able to spring forward when the ball is turned over, or if they become a free man. And I think we have plenty options in that regard between the two Recks, Flood and even Devitt. beano (Wexford) - Posts: 1500 - 08/02/2022 22:04:48 2399435 Link 0 |
Dunbar put in a big shift again. Need to mind him he'll be playing fitzgibbon again next week. Might be better letting him come off the bench in Ennis if Kevin Foley is back. Also good to see Shane Reck back

Dunbar has really added the work rate to his game the last couple of years. He always had the hurling skill!
