But all said and done wexford deserved the win for the effort they put in and the hunger they showed. It wasn't a great watch quality wise but was definitely exciting for first league game. The pitch I thought wasnt in great nick and the wind all factored into the near 40 wides in the match." Yeah walked across the pitch after the game wasn't in the best of nick, Parnell Park didn't look great either on TV, Wexford Park is a disaster of a windy a day, only Salthill probably worse of the county grounds, I wouldn't be overly critical of either team for the excessive wides due to that.

He was lucky to stay on the field for it.
I think on the balance and spirit of the game the end result was fair

Replying To tiobraid: "I agree you'll get it with most suporters and abuse from the stand but going up to aplyer after a match on the pitch is a whole new level. I'd say he was no more than 19 at the time either. Why when someone from Tipp stats facts its always thrown back that I'm from Tipp. Can ye not get past that at this stage?" You took a pop at the perceived lack of support limerick had in 16 which was in accurate. You also stated you don't like limerick which is fair enough due to the rivalry and recent success of said rival. You are always very good in your assessments of the game and I'd agree with your analysis for the most part. What I don't like is that now a county is winning from a low base that people think its clever to comment at the large following they're getting. How many are at Tipp/KK trainings before championship matches these days? Far cry from the thousands that were there 10/12 years ago. My point is that success will always draw a crowd no matter the sport or the geography. I'm not sure what we are to get past but that's fine. Limerick hurling people are the finest you could meet. We had been through a huge barren run. As I said all countys have that "element" they'd rather weren't there and wearing the jersey the rest of us wear but they are everywhere.

I'd agree with you. I think both teams tried to hurl the correct way and wexford got the important goal. Wexford possibly could have won a bit more comfortably if I'm being honest.

Lots of children there who don't add to the official attendance, there was about 2k of them on the pitch at half time sure." From personal experience you always arrive earlier for an away game as you might not familiar with parking, allow time for possible traffic etc. At home you might chance coming in 10 mins before throw in.

A few things from yesterday -
On Wexford - A win against the All-Ireland champions regardless of the situation is a good day out. I taught our backs were excellent all throughout and we got our match-ups right. Matt O Hanlon had a fantastic game in the corner and hopefully he maintains that level for the rest of the year. Regardless of peoples opinion on him he is a key man for us and he will have the thankless job of marking a lot of teams big danger men throughout the year. I expect his position to vary depending on the opposition and I don't think he is tied specifically to corner back this year. Paudie Foley back is a huge addition - he is a fantastic hurler and he also gives us three big men across the back 6. I like the idea of Reck hurling centre back as I think he is a class hurler but again it will depend on opposition. Up front I taught we battled excellently but obviously a few things to work on. We won very little primary possession from pucks out (albeit against a colossus size of a half back line) which is something im sure Egan will look to work on. We look like we are going to try utilse Conor McDonald on the edge of the square but for me we need a small bit more from him if we are to really compete this year. He showed in glimpses yesterday of what he can do. I was Delighted for the fringe players yesterday like Foley, McGuickan and Dwyer to an extent who all played well. Oisin Foley reminds me a little of Tom Morrissey of Limerick in that he is usually very accurate when he gets a shot at the posts.
On Limerick - I was looking at them in awe during the warm up, their sheer physical conditioning is insane. How Colin Coughlin is u21 I don't know, their must be something different in the water down there. I taught their backs were fantastic all game to, especially Richie English and Barry Nash. I'm sure people don't have English penciled in when Finn comes back buy by yesterdays performance he should be guaranteed to hold his place in the team. I love watching Limerick play, and a few times yesterday when they clicked it was frightening how fast they can move the ball through the lines. I would imagine Kiely would have been disappointed with the showing up front, especially from Pat Ryan, Oneill and Reidy. Guillane is only coming out of his winter slumber and we all know what he can do in the summer months.
On the ref - I taught he had a good game. Yes Dwyer took too many steps but thats a hard one to call when hes being fouled. I felt he was harsh on Jack O Connor once or twice and likewise on Limerick players but he allowed the game to be a physcial contest and wasnt whistle happy which I think is all we can ask for. Another referee yesterday would have turned that game into a free taking contest.

Great competition for places now with Shane Reck and Devitt to return. Thought this was our best full back line in a long time. All big and physical and didn't commit in the tackle - or give away soft frees brilliant stuff.
Paudie Foley is one of the best CBs in the country when he's on form.
Hoping for another big performance vs Clare.

Well done Darragh Egan and Management team. Tactically very good and very cool and calm on the sideline. Matt O Hanlon excellent in a position that raised a couple of eyebrows

I think, everybody is a bit too worked up over things. It was a 1st round league match, both teams know there are bigger fish to fry (we all hope) later in the year. 2 rusty teams without key men, a lot of tenacious defending and not a free taking contest or a score fest and every free/shot/pass was fought for like your life depended on it. I for one (as a back myself) loved it. I loved that the ref didn't blow for everything. Players are experts at playing for frees now. I hope referees are starting to give the tackler the benefit of the doubt again. Not every contact is a free and some you get, some you don't. Plenty of early season cobwebs but a good hard fought contest given the conditions. If it is a precursor to the year ahead, bring it on. Calm down all, its only a game!
Back to Wexford discussion, does anyone know how far off Chin, Foley and ROC are?

Big men so mobile with honed skills as well. Jesus what a challenge to match them when the ball is hopping off the ground. Will they hit as many wides again this year ? That is not taking away from Wexford who stood up to them yesterday and restored pride in the shirt.

With regards to my comments after the walsh cup I will put my hand up and say I was wrong. Its amazing what a bit of vocal support can do for the players. Croke park the night of the walsh cup was just a blue wave on and off the field. With regards to conor mac the lad is hurling very well and just needs to grow in to the game more. But some people on this thread need to get off the mans back.

Replying To Oldtourman: "In fairness, I was sitting high up at that end of the stand and looking directly down on Gillane and O'Hanlon as they met up at the start of the game and while the usual jostling took place you are grossly exaggerating what happened between them and I am going to Wexford and Limerick matches long enough to know that plenty of this 'getting to know you nonsense goes on on all sides' as it does in most games. I would also remind you that we have often seen Gullane cleaned out in League games before only for him to blitz the same opposition when the sun is high in the sky. Having said all that sincere congratulations to Wexford on a fine win and I wish them well in the future. They have had a fair bit of under age success in Leinster in the past seven or eight years and it is a success that just might be transferring to senior level now." I thought the game was played at great intensity for a 1st round of the league game and wasnt overly dirty. Dont know why some people have to complain about little things OTM. Yes it was low scoring with 40 odd wides and balls dropped short but a breeze in the Park makes scoring more difficult than at most grounds. We have only won 1 underage Leinster since the 3 in a row u21 team, that the minor title in 2019, but we have had some excellent hurlers every year as you say. Hopefully some will kick on to be great senior hurlers now.

Replying To Oldtourman: "Do you mind if I address a few of your points. How many times has Sean O'Donoghue, his opponent in that '18 game, got yellow cards. in '18 alone he was yellow carded in both games against Limerick and that night in Pairc Ui Caoimh he made a clothes line tackle on Cian Lynch a few minutes after the Gullane incident, for which he was yellow carded. Owens could be clearly seen going for a card until he realised who he had and he relented. Suffice to say he should have gone, but Cork were playing at home. Now as regards the Barrett incident, two expierianced referees discussed the situation and McCallister was very close to the incident and based on their deliberations a yellow card was recommended. I might infuse the information here that in sixty years going to matches I have never seen a Cork Ref give anything soft to Limerick. The Abbey Theatre Performance, on Barrett's part, in response to the tap he got, may have also informed the refs decision. The fact that many feel Barrett 'got' Ritchie Hogan put off on the wrong, a few years earlier, may also have been a factor. Incidentally when Hegarty was through on goal and Barrett, in an attempted block, seemed to pull across his hand with considerable force. Hegarty went on one knee, but quickly jumped up and ran back to his position. Suffice to say if he had brought his acting skills into play, as his adversary had a few minutes earlier, and that little episode was revisited, Barrett might be the one taking the lonely walk- it at least merited a yellow card." Instead of defending Gillane and justifying him pulling dirty why don't ye just call him out on it. If ye don't ye are just enabling and excusing that side to his play. I don't buy this nonsense that he gets any more hardship than any other inside forward, they all get a certain amount of it. I'm saying it on this forum for years, he's a great hurler but his indiscipline will cost Limerick eventually, could/should of last year v Tipp but it will eventually happen. Our own Rory O Connor has a hot side to him that could get him in trouble, and he gets as much hardship as anyone else but i don't think Wexford fans would condone him lashing out and getting sent off.
