Replying To cavanblueman:  "since when did clubs have a say in Cavan? thats the problem with Cavan Football, many in the County Board, many of them never kicked a ball before, making decisions and dictating to clubs. Clubs have no say."
As I remember it, Peter Quinn was hired by the county board to recommend a way forward for club football. Same Peter Quinn who was the driving force behind upgrade to Croke Park. He made recommendations which included reducing the clubs in Senior from 14 to 9 at the time. It was about to be implemented when a few clubs, looking after their own selfish interests threw a spanner in the works. Next year we ended up with 17 teams in Senior. So the clubs messed this up. Easy to moan about the county board. What about the clubs. What about the fact that they are so disinterested in developing their own coaches that 90% of them are managed by outside managers. Its and embarrassment what is going on in clubs.

Replying To Inaroundehouse:  "Get some in-house games going where you get the top 3/4 teams playing the county team.
Maybe a few amalgamations also playing the county team.
Stoke up a bit of rivalry among players and supporters.
Gaels beating the county team would cause plenty of talking points.
And I firmly believe they would beat them."
Well if this thread has highlighted anything, it's that there is no simple solution as there are so many different opinions and agendas,

Inandaroundthehouse, you want the best players from intermediate and junior to amalgamate and play in the senior championship, as well as their own.

So we'd have the league, the junior/intermediate championship, the senior championship and then you want a few in-house games where the top clubs play the county.

Throw in the college tournaments, the county U-20 championship, club and minor U-21 tournaments and now the new club U-21 Ulster Championship on top of all that.

I think we'd have to do away with the intercounty senior scene altogether to fit that calendar in.

And while your opinion that the club scene should be given more attention is fair and valid, we've seen and increasing number of inter-county managers saying that there's no way they can be expected to not have their players for the free month of April.

My point is, it's impossible to keep everyone happy.

Replying To cavanblueman:  "Mackey played in the County Final - he had minimal impact if no impact whatsoever, he's one dimensional and wouldnt fit into the Gaels unit.

As for McKiernan, he's not a forward, and unfortunately for him, the game has changed, you dont need tall midfielders, you need mobile ones, and he doesn't fit that category."
100% correct . The Gaels play as s unit. Study them , watch them.
Kevin Meehan attacking with the ball out of defence... time and again he looks for dunne nd Johnston.. watch it..
Killian Clarke attacking with the ball out of defence.. who does he look for?
Nobody he tries to do it all himself.
That's only one example. Teamwork

Replying To fredflint:  "Are you saying that before inaroundthehouse was on here on the forum he actually managed the Gaels to multiple championships and that based on that I should accept that McVitty, Gearoid, Mackey etc are actually not good enough to make the Gaels team???"
Nobody said they weren't good enough. What I said was I wouldn't drop a Gaels forward to facilitate and county forward.
Because they not able to play the Gaels system. Reilly is slow, McVitty runs up blind alleys losing possession , Mackey has turned into a half back for some reason and McKiernan not a fast forward so of no advantage to the Gaels forward line.

And the same county board hired a an outside committee who recommended tommy Carr years ago too. And rubber stamped the recommendation despite Carr's woeful record with Roscommon a year previous.
Good move that proved to be.

The Cavan county board, like any other, are the embodiment of the footballing knowledge, innovation, and application that exists in the county. Democratically elected, they are us and we are them. The lads bleating on about it here have probably never put themselves forward for selection for any position (maybe that is a good thing). I am guilty on that front too.

Unlike the performances of our county team which are out of your hands, there is a route for you to do something about the county board...
Attend your club meetings, serve on a committee, put your name forward at the AGM, get selected as a CB delegate, attend those meetings, make an impression, develop an idea, build consensus, propose it, change something. Simple.

In the meantime, some chat about actual football would not go amiss on here.

We've come along way, a number of chairmen have come and gone promising to do this and that, but nothing was done.

They are blinded by their own agenda's. Can they not see that the club should come first. Fix the club scene, make it competitive, make the club players happy and then we might see progress on the County Team.

Yes clubs are having to pay outside managers, but what choice do they have, because the GAA from the top down have made it that way. They allowed it to happen the day they signed their big TV deals etc. Mr O Farrell, Duffy and all the executives on large salaries, County Managers getting big money, and yet clubs expect a volunteer, working 9-5 with family, to manage a team for nothing!!

What big salary is Mr. O'Farrell on, whoever he is? Could you list the other executives on big salaries also?

How did the GAA "make it that way"? Did they make clubs not encourage their members to attending the coaching classes?

Are you referring to the Sky deal that came in four years ago? How has that impacted on clubs paying outside managers?

Mackey had minimal impact because he was sick with serious respiratory issues. Mickey Lyng had minimal impact in final and Paul O Connor. Doesn't make them bad players. And in last years champ I saw lots of County players stand out.

Sure McKiernan isn't a forward even tough he regularly outscored cavan entire full forward line when playing at ctr forward.

Sounds like Gaels current manager is the man for the job, it is s good manager gets players to play for one another. Couldn't agree more some of current county players think runninup a blind alley and ignore forwards is the way to play football... no wonder Cavan hasn't s forward left in the squad.
Jayo is the man to have in there.

Couldn't agree more. I believe he qualified S and C coach too. Would be a great progressive appointment.

Maybe in around 10 years time Jason might be the man but right now he is one of the lad's.

I think Jason managed two other teams I am open to correction may I ask how he did with them ???

I would say the gaels are one of the easy teams to win a senior title with don't you think.
I Niall Lynch he won two titles with different clubs so.
I cannot remember the name of the man that won two titles with Mullahoran and Ballinagh they have proven themselves.
Sadly even if Jason was to win 7 in a row with Cavan Gaels as it stands people would take no notice.
I feel Crosserlough and Killygarry are coming through and they may well make it very hard for the Gaels then if they do win 7 in a row for sure Jason would be the man.
Micky Graham has done very well in Longford is he not wort considering for the future there are several more names out there Damien Reilly Dessie Brady these are just a few so don't get hung up with one person as much as I like him I would advise him don't rush your turn will come tis applies to Micky as well.

On the Clarke game itself. They are very direct running team. Cavan defense struggled last year when teams ran down the middle. Moynagh lacks pace
stopping Gary Brennan half the battle. Sexton and Tubridy good forwards.

Madge...this has to go down has the funniest post in a long, long time...knowledge, innovation? are you blind? What knowledge or innovation have we seen recently in Cavan Football? Football is a mess at the moment, club players dont know when they're playing next, who they're playing and where they're playing. The underage structure is a total mess.

The GAA changed the underage grades to make things better. The minor grade was brought back to U17 as 90% of minors are doing the leaving cert, so those guys who are U17 have no exams and could play football during June & July, what does the CB do, they fix an underage league for February and the championship for 6 months later in August, so when the league finishes, an U17 club player doesn't play again until August.
They've also let amalgamations in again because apparently clubs dont have enough players, yet some clubs have two amalgamated teams in the competition...when asked what the criteria for amalgamating is, the reply was there is none, so you have clubs that arent neighbors amalgamating with each other with no benefit to anybody.

Ah lovely, we are back to talking about football and not just Cavan Gaels and Terry Hyland.

I have to admit, i'm in 2 minds about driving down to this one. I think Clare are playing a good brand of football and I am half interested in seeing them in action. It can't see how we can possibly play in any sort of cohesive fashion as this is essentially the first game of the year. We can't say that the McKenna Cup was anything other than county trials for some potentials.

Clare got off to a good start to their year and had one hand on the McGrath Cup only for a last minute goal to rob them off a deserved victory over Cork. So it is hard to see our lads get the points but I hope that I am wrong. I have to say also, I have never been more doubtful about the line up of a cavan team. I couldn't even guess who his starting 15 will be.
