R Galligan (0-03, 0-03f); P Faulkner, R Dunne, K Brady; F Flanagan, C Moynagh (0-01), K Clarke; T Corr, G McKiernan (0-04, 0-3f); D McVeety (0-03), M Argue (0-01), M Reilly (0-02); C Mackey (0-01), S Johnston (0-01, 0-1f), J Brady (0-01).

Subs: N Murray for Argue, C Brady for Faulkner, J McLoughlin for K Brady, T Hayes for Johnston, G Smith (0-01) for Corr, L Buchanan for Mackey.

That was the team that lost to Derry in 2016 in what proved to be Hyland's last game.

We have a serious problem with player turnover in this county. Why can we not keep a settled panel? Sure, every county loses a few players each year for different reasons, but we haemorrhage them. Additionally the players who leave us are key personnel, not squad or fringe players. Furthermore, why do so many young players who show promise in their youth walk away from the county? Where is Michael Argue these days? What about Mooney from Redhills? Tom Hayes? There are several more examples. I thought these lads would be key players by now.

That McKenna cup campaign was farcical. There is no harm trying out new players, in fact I think it should be done, so I commend the manager for that. But we didn't learn anything we didn't know already i.e. the talent just isn't there.

I'm afraid we will just have to accept the cold hard reality that Cavan football is, and will always be inferior and incapable of competing at a meaningful level. We tried to develop the youth after decades of scratching our heads wondering what's wrong. Well we got plenty of silverware at U21 provincial level and nothing to show for it at senior. Utterly depressing.

Cork robbed this match in time added on.

Replying To HonCavan:  "Clare play Cork on the 13th in the McGrath cup final and we should pay very close attention to that game as it will show us a lot of things to take about both teams as we play them both in the first 5 rounds of the league. Both scored 2-18 a piece in previous games in the cup whereas Cork conceded less and Clare conceded a goal so Cork look stronger.
Meath look to be reaching the O'Byrne cup final against Offaly or Westmeath and this good run in the cup will do the county no negatives barring injuries but they should be hard to beat. Louth didn't get out of their group but after an opening day loss to Longford by beating Kildare by 8, not something to be overlooked as we hammered by a division 1 team last night.
Roscommon are taking FBD league very seriously and have racked up a serious points difference of +26 over their first 2 games, hopefully by the time they play us they will be running low on steam and vulnerable.
Down lost their opening 2 games in Dr McKenna cup and look to be in the same position as us come league. Armagh have a win and a draw under their belt and could win their group depending on their game vs Derry."

Well that match was played and Clare were unlucky to lose to Cork by one point. 3-12 to 3-11 so neither are lacking scorers.

R Galligan; P Faulkner (0-01), K Clarke, J McLoughlin; J McEnroe, N Murray, C Moynagh (0-01); G McKiernan (0-03, 1f), T Corr (0-02); C Mackey (0-01), M Reilly (0-02), C Brady; C O'Reilly (0-02), L Buchanan, D McVeety (0-01)

That was the team that started against Tipperary. McEnroe, Corr, Mackey wont be going to Clare anyway, I'm not sure if Murrary, Buchanan or Martin Reilly will be available either? I expect there'll be a number of debuts in Ennis

Some players have already left the panel in the past few days since the Tyrone game, what is going on at all in there.

Left the panel or cut from the panel? I would expect to see a number gone to make space for the players coming back. At the end of the day a lot of what was in there was not up to the required standard and that was demonstrated over the McKenna cup games. If you are telling me that some important players have left then that is another issue altogether.

At the end of the day a lot of what was in there was not up to the required standard and that was demonstrated over the McKenna cup games. If you are telling me that some important players have left then that is another issue altogether."

Left the panel or cut from the panel? I would expect to see a number gone to make space for the players coming back. At the end of the day a lot of what was in there was not up to the required standard and that was demonstrated over the McKenna cup games. If you are telling me that some important players have left then that is another issue altogether.

I would like to hear the players that are gone from the previous panel. It was obvious many were going to be removed from the current panel but I wold say the door is not closed to them going forward.

No body has left the panel a number of injuries have been picked up tho over the last few games and lads need to be looked at.

Players are also only starting to return to training now so a lot of work will have to be done with them to get them ready for Clare...( I.E. Mackey,Martin Reilly,N.Murray,GMc )

So before the National League kicks off....people need to take a reality check. Not one current Cavan player would get within an inch of the panel of the bigger teams.

That's the starting point....now, for anyone who attended this years club championship, apart from the Gaels, the football, the skill levels and the basics were very poor. I dont recall any current high profile County player having a stand out Championship. Those who stood out were your non-county players, and in fairness to Mattie, these are the players that he drafted into the squad for trials and the McKenna Cup. But then again, the championship is run off over a short period of time, can you really judge a player over a short period of time.

So to get to the point, the players we have are not good enough. The reason why is simple and will take a long time to fix. Players need to be coached properly from a young age, they need to be left with their clubs and forget this nonsense of development squads, they dont work, players in development squads think they've made it, whilst their friends left behind in their clubs feel rejected.

Senior Club Football needs to be restructured, we need a competitive league, regular games every weekend, club needs to come before County, that means a County Manager having the balls to change things. As I stated above, judge a player who has played regularly, a player that has played 10/12 games in a row in a competitive league.

Back in the 80s, the Gaels commenced their underage strategy, the basic skills were taught, slowly but surely, the work started to pay off, they started to dominate at underage, and then a number of minor wins in the 90s and then the holy grail of senior championships, and playing a great brand of fast, free moving football. Thats where we need to get to if Cavan Football is ever going to change.

You have got it almost spot on out from a few
One, the gaels are no better than the others don't be under any illusion's about that.
Two, when you got the previous seniors to win 5 or six in a row you forgot that the wheel keeps turning by that I mean it starts all over again to keep players coming through the system, as it stand now you have a head start because everyone else forgot to do this.
Sadly other clubs failed to do that but are now suffering.
Killygarry and Crosserlough seem to be bringing a nice group forward so it wil be interesting to see how they do in a few years and they are working at all underage level male and female.
I can tell you not all players that stood out up to the 1/4 final stages were in for the McKenna cup thats for sure.

The bottom line is players brought into the county panel are discarded to early thus leaving them with nowhere to gain experience .

Take Kevin Meehan for example .. in 2012 he was drafted into the county panel.
Within a year he was discarded.
Now he's playing the best football of his life. Luckily for him his improvement came from playing with good club players and learning from them plus his own personal training.
If a player from a junior club gets called up... then discarded and sent back to his junior club where will his improvement come from?
Mattie was right bringing lads into the panel and givinging them 3 Mc Jenna cup games.
Hopefully he will keep the better ones in the league panel and give them game time because that's the only way they will improve .
Sending them back to play junior club football won't improve them.
