Tight Division 2. Louth would probably be considered one of the weaker teams but Pete McGrath will have them organized.Clare are an improving team ,put it up to Kerry and Mayo last year in Ennis. Cavan will need all the injured players back.

So based on last year's league and championship performances our ranking suggests we are joint favorites for relegation along with Down.
The last time we were in Division 2 the ranking also suggested we were favorites for relegation and we managed to get promoted!
We need a minimum of 3 points from our opening 2 games. Obviously the strategy was to keep our better players fresh for the league so hopefully that will pay off with wins against Clare and Louth. If we can achieve that, last night's debacle will soon be forgotten, unlike Terry's McKenna Cup Final against Tyrone which has now reached mythical status!

Replying To cavanblueman: "Fred...Cavan lost to Tyrone in a McKenna Cup Final to Tyrone, having failed to score in the entire second half. The manager at the time was Terry Hyland, with 3/4 years senior management experience under his belt and he played a full strength Cavan side at that. Terry had absolutely no answer to Hartes tactics in the 2nd half
Mattie is only going into only his 2nd year, Cavan played a full strength Tyrone side last night, the Cavan team were a team of young lads with no experience, so please, dont try and compare last nights loss to the McKenna Cup Final.
As much as Hyland did with Cavan, he won absolutely nothing at Senior level, the football under him was nauseating, yes, he won a few Ulster U21s, but where are all those players now, how many of them did he nurture onto the Senior team? Cavan Football is now suffering, because nearly all club managers have tried to adopt Terrys negative tactics, and players dont know how to play attacking football. It will take Mattie 2/3 years to tidy up Terrys mess." That's probably one of the better posts and it sums the last 5 years up perfectly.

They got promoted to Division 1 playing attacking football, finished as top scorers in Div 2. But over look that anyway.

I have all ways said we should take the McKenna Cup seriously as it is a great moment builder in the lead up to the league... Look how Tyrone treat it and compare how their seasons pan out down the year's in relation to Cavans....? No point in putting out micky mouse teams to get hammered... Cavan would be better pull out of the McKenna Cup if they are not willing to take it seriously... Almost a whole new team will have their first outing of the season in our league opener which is madness seeing we had 3 games to get the team up to speed before the Clare game.....

Clare play Cork on the 13th in the McGrath cup final and we should pay very close attention to that game as it will show us a lot of things to take about both teams as we play them both in the first 5 rounds of the league. Both scored 2-18 a piece in previous games in the cup whereas Cork conceded less and Clare conceded a goal so Cork look stronger. Meath look to be reaching the O'Byrne cup final against Offaly or Westmeath and this good run in the cup will do the county no negatives barring injuries but they should be hard to beat. Louth didn't get out of their group but after an opening day loss to Longford by beating Kildare by 8, not something to be overlooked as we hammered by a division 1 team last night. Roscommon are taking FBD league very seriously and have racked up a serious points difference of +26 over their first 2 games, hopefully by the time they play us they will be running low on steam and vulnerable. Down lost their opening 2 games in Dr McKenna cup and look to be in the same position as us come league. Armagh have a win and a draw under their belt and could win their group depending on their game vs Derry.

I wasn't having a go at Terry Hyland. I was taking the p*ss out of the posters who spent the past few years sh*ting on about that particular game. The McKenna Cup doesn't matter win, lose or draw. We beat Tyrone last year in the first round of the McKenna Cup and where did that get us? My point is if we beat Clare and Louth in the first two rounds of the league, the McKenna Cup defeat to Tyrone will be forgotten just as quickly as our McKenna success over them was last year.

Lads, how the hell is Terry Hylands name still been used on intercounty forum posts. This is Matties second year in charge. From the outside looking in it looks like players are making their own decisions on whether to commit or not on the basis of the current management structure. Maybe I'm wrong but if there was a feel good factor around the county and players had a real buy in and belief in the management the squad line-out would be a lot different than it was Wednesday night.

Now that the Dr McKenna cup is park for us for another 12 months all eyes turn to the first round of the league. Have any of the newcomers to the panel done enough to warrant a starting jersey? What's our strongest 15 possible for this league opener?over.

I have in the past been one to highlight the importance of the McKenna Cup but at this point and looking at where Mattie is at in terms of his tenure and knowledge, I have no problem with the manner of the defeat. Its pretty meaningless. As the above poster mentioned, a good start in the league will mean that this result is completely forgotten.
I think that the real work starts now. We have players starting to come back into the picture and Mattie will be bringing back a lot of last years set up so there is no need to hit the panic button on 12th January! We are getting a bit too sensational on this forum and its a sad reflection on how we are following our media and digesting so much of the crap they are feeding us.
Anyway, as I see it, for the McKenna Cup we have put out a completely new squad apart from 3-4 who have some experience. It comes as no surprise to me that a completely new team with multiple players making debuts, that we lost to Tyrone. We more than lost but it is what it is.
I wonder if this will end up being a master stroke by McGleenan in resting key players. There seem to be some murmours of discontent in the squad but I really hope that the players will give it everything and the manager deserves a chance to put his stamp on this team.

I'm not sure Mackey is in and won't be in time for league opener. And some of lads I named probably aren't either. Connolly could go in too. Him and Caoimhin were being put through paces Wednesday night so must be close.

I suppose a lot will depend on who is match fit for Clare game. Strange he didn't start a McKenna cup game. Ciaran Flynn should have played one game too. Maybe we not in crisis mode yet and have a decent team. Hopefully we get our solididty back because in all three games we conceded at least four clear goal chances. We also need to show a semblance of a gameplan.
I still don't think our team is as good as previous years and the turnover of players is alarming.
