The late Michael Thompson Michael Thompson may have swapped the Irish coast for that of neighbouring England a long time ago but it was still with great sadness that the people of Rathnew heard about his death. A native of Rathnew, Mickey as he was commonly known, was probably the best remembered for his efforts as part of the legendary Rathnew side who helped themselves to three Senior Football Championship in a row from 1941 to 1943. A keen and obviously gifted footballer; Mickey was forced to take the same route as many people at the time and emigrated to England. However, he still kept close ties to Rathnew and regularly returned home with his family during the Summer months. Even while over in England he still checked our the Wicklow People for the latest news and to see how his beloved red and greens had got on. Anyone who ever visited him over in eNgland can also testify to the great pride he felt in being from Wicklow and Rathnew and was always eager to hear the latest goings on. He will be sadly missed but his memory will long live on. Courtesy of Wicklow People 22 March 2007
