Kavanagh, Joseph

September 22, 2005
The Late Joseph Kavanagh The death of 79 year old Joseph (Josie) Kavanagh, Scarriffe, Co. Clare and formerly of Kilpipe, Aughrim caused widespread regret. Josie died in hospital on Monday September 12 after a long illness. An old Annacurra Gael, he was a great Annacurra Gaelic player in his younger days, and was a defender with the team in the Intermediate football final in 1953. He also played in a number of other important fixtures with the club. A devout Annacurra man, he was twin brother to Michael Kavanagh, who sadly predeceased him in 1980. Josie worked in forestation and continued in the forestry when he went to live in Clare. He came from a farming background and was a great neighbour and friend to many in the Annacurra area. Indeed, he often travelled from Clare for a lot of funeral of family friends he knew over the years. On Wednesday September 14 the Annacurra GAA and Camogie Club travelled by bus to Clare for the funeral, and performed a guard of honour for their deceased friend. Josie was a great person, and colleague and was a great raconteur. His death will be much regretted both in Annacurra and Scarriffe, Co. Clare. His remains were buried in Scarriffe After Requiem Mass. He is survived by his wife, Sheila, seven sons, seven daughters, brother Donal (Hacketstown), extended family, relatives and friends.
