Double blow for Meath

Stephen Clynch gains possession for Meath against Donegal at Lomans Park Trim

Meath hurlers will have to plan without two of their more experienced players for Saturday's Christy Ring opener against Wicklow at Trim.

Martin Ennis charges will be favourites to see off the challenge of the Garden County, but their task has been made that bit harder due to the absence of Kilmessan's Stephen Clynch and Silvermines' Ronan Sherlock.

Clynch who has battled back to fitness after a long term injury is due to get married today (Friday) and is heading on his honeymoon tomorrow.

In previous years, the second tier All-Ireland SHC has not started until May, but it has been brought forward this year and now clashes with Clynch's big day out.

Meanwhile, a clash of fixtures sees Sherlock lining out for his home club against Ballingarry in the Tipperary senior hurling championship at Holycross.

Sherlock is eligible for Meath as he lives in the county, but GAA rules state that a player in this situation must line out for his club first.
