Blessington GAA Notes

April 13, 2015

Senior Notes:

Seniors - Well done to our Seniors who had a big win over Bray Emmets in the first round of the Renault Senior Football Championship. In a very cold Aughrim ground Blessington led 3 pts to 0pts when Bray scored a goal. It was point for point to half time with the score 1-3 to Blesso 0-6. Blesso came out looking very determined in the second half and Mikey O'Connor opened the scores with a point. Bray evened it up but not for long. Patrick O'Connor found the back of the net and Blesso were ahead by a goal. A point by brother Mikey put us 4 pts ahead. Bray scored a point and Conor FlanneryMon from Bray fisted in a terrific goal bringing the sides level once again. With 3 mins added on it was pulsating stuff watching the teams trying to break the deadlock. On the 30 min mark Blesso 's Curtis Geraghty put us a point ahead and with the clock ticking and with seconds to go Kevin Hanlon put the ball over the bar. The Blessington supporters could finally relax and applaud their team for an entertaining, sporting and exciting start to the championship. A great team effort who kept fighting to the very end. Final score Bray Emmets 2-5 Blesso 1-10. Scorers - Patrick O'Connor 1-02, Mikey O'Connor 0-4, Barry Murphy 0-2, Curtis Geraghty 0-1 and Kevin Hanlon 0-1. A great start for this team and their management Jarlath, Fergus, Kevin, Shane and John.

Juvenile Notes:

Easter Camp - Our Easter Camp held on Wed 8th & Thursday 9th April was an all round success, with a massive 165 boys & girls aged 6-12 taking part. All facilities were in use over the two days from the Age 6's enjoying their time on the astro, to the more experienced 11 & 12 year olds competing in some serious All Ireland blitzes!! We couldn't have asked for better weather over the two days, with plenty of suncream needed! Big credit and a massive thank you to our 17 wonderful coaches(Colin Miley, Steven Bohan, Kevin Hanlon, Molly Cullen, Kim Connors, Amanda Connors, Ellen Quinn, Eddie Boylan, Mikey O'Connor, Eoin Howlin, Roisin Ellis, Patrick O'Connor, Rachel Hanlon, Martin Shannon, Nicole Walsh, Shauna Byrne & Lauren Bird). it's not easy coaching and amusing that number of kids for 4 hours each day, but our lads & ladies certainly made it look easy with the great set up of skills, fun games & football matches. There was a lovely mixture of fine footballers, some up and coming Gooches and a right little bunch of jokers among the groups. The Coaches ensured every child thoroughly enjoyed it. Each child received a T-Shirt(thanks to Noreen for organising) and a wrist band, they really looked the part all kitted out in blue(pic attached). We finished up with some awards Thursday afternoon where the coaches picked the following: Niamh Brennan was named Young Girl of the Camp & presented by Patrick O'Connor. Eoin Howlin presented the Young Boy of the Camp award to David Gilmore. Senior Girl of the Camp went to Kayleigh McGuire presented by Steven Bohan and Kim Connors presented Sean Ellis with the Senior Boy of the Camp award. After plenty of thinking and a tough decision the kids choice award for Coach of the Camp was Eddie Boylan. We also gave out some Easter Eggs much to the delight of the kids! Jess Carroll thanked all the kids, parents & coaches for a great successful camp. Many thanks to Noelle McGarr for the lovely lunch both days for all the coaches. Thank you also to John Magee & Tommy O'Hagan for looking after the car park & facilities. Lorcan McMahon thanks a mil for helping with Registration both mornings. Pat Brennan also thanked everyone for the big success.

U9's - Our u9s played Confey (Leixlip) on Sat 11 Apr and had a fine win. Every player gave 100% through the four quarters playing each 1/4 in a different position .Leila Shannon &Ava Jordan-Dempsey put it up to the boys. Playing during the week at the Easter Camp spurred them all on. Management were delighted with all performances and Dylan Keogh stood to the fore. Our next match is away to Eadestown on the 25 Apr.

Some great movement of the ball and well taken scores. The lads were 1pt up at half time having played with the wind. The second half commenced and the wind was strong, St Nicholas went 5 pts ahead but our lads never gave up and eventually got level. Time was ticking away and we finally went ahead once more. In the last minute of injury time James Jackson got a goal to win by 4 pts. Well done to all involved and to all who braved the cold weather to support the lads.
