Magee thinking long-term

Wicklow football manager Johnny Magee

Johnny Magee has a long-term vision for the future of Wicklow football.

The Garden County manager is adamant that if the right groundwork is done now then Wicklow will be in a better position to compete going forward:

"Training is going well, the lads are training five times a week," he states in The Wicklow People. "They're in the gym twice a week and then we've three field sessions. We're trying to get a team to compete consistently at county level.

"It's not just to get a performance here or there. It's to get them to a certain standard of fitness and strength and conditioning, but not just for one season - I want it to be a standard that's set for years to come, whether I'm here or not.

"Whoever comes in after me then won't be starting from scratch in terms of strength and conditioning. Things haven't gone to plan, but that's football. A lot of the lads were used to only three times a week but now they're up to five times a week. Division One teams are training six times a week, that's what the standard is."
