Best score from a Westmeath player

(Oldest Posts First)

Our return to Division 4 got me thinking about all the great moments our players gave us since we were last there. One memory that sticks out for me was Martin Flanagans magnificent goal v Laois at Tullamore in 2000 when he soloed past the Laois defence in a style that only he could before unleashing an unstoppable shot . I dont believe ive seen better. Another that sticks in my mind was a Ritchie Browne volley which he first timed into the Laois net from a long distance out in the 1999 Leinster U21 Final also in Tullamore. There was Shane Deerings rugby tackle versus Derry which ensured our first All Ireland Minor Title. Then there was the famous pitch invasion in Limerick when we defeated star studded Kerry (Tadhg Kennelly, Tomas O'Se, Aodan MacGearailt, Paul Galvin etc) to win our U21All Ireland. The Leinster Senior win of course in 2004 was magic. I also remember the day that Martin Flanagan, Des Dolan and Ger Heavin scored 3-11 between them to soundly beat Longford at Cusack Park in 1999, 3-17 to 2-09. There were all the balls that Gary Connaughton saved over the crossbar that beat many a team. The comeback against Meath in 2015 to finally bury the Royal bogey also has to be included and many tigerish defensive displays which won manys a game including versus Dublin in 2004 when Healys switch onto Alan Brogan slowed up the Dubs when it looked like we were going to be steamrolled. Joe Fallons displays off the bench were often memorable too.
Those were the days my friends , i thought they'd never end.

Westmeath beating mayo in 2001 was a great day also. Dessie scored a sideline ball from an impossible angle in extra time.

That was a great win for sure. Dessie scored another great line ball from under the Cusack Stand versus Meath in 2004 the same day Maurice Fitzgerald scored his famous sideline versus Dublin in Thurles. There were also the Division 2 Final wins versus Cork, Limerick and against Dublin in Navan which were important in their own right. Another great win was knocking Galway out of the championship in Salthill in 2008.

Does anyone have a video or link to that Martin Flanagan goal? It was one of the greatest.

That was 2001 when Dessie scored the line ball against Eastmeath, got one in 2003 against them as well. Was 2006 when we knocked Galway out of the championship. That was a great championship run, beat Limerick after going down to 14 men, Sligo on their own patch and Galway too.

The line ball Dessie scored in 2001 was against Mayo in Hyde Park Roscommon in a last 12 game.
Westmeath won by one point after extra time with Damien Gavin fisting over the winner.

Yeah corrected myself on the Dessie sideline that I was talking about ...It was 2001. Also yes Galway (and Sligo) win was in 2006 not 2008. My memory is going.

Michael Ennis also scored a good goal versus Dublin in 2008 from a ball over the top and Ennis got in behind them and buried it. We only lost that match by 2 points. He scored another goal that year in Omagh versus Tyrone when we lost by 4 points. Tyrone went on to win the All Ireland.

Tom Stuart-Trainor scored an absolute beast of a point in the 1995 All-Ireland Final.

That Dublin game in 08 was one we really left behind us. Natchie and Healy were really getting in behind defences that year from the half back line and Natchie just beat Cluxton to a great ball in and flicked it past him, we missed some easy chances kicking in to the hill in the second half. We deserved to win that game and could have beat Tyrone in Omagh too. We were only 2 points down when Dessie got a great chance and just put it the wrong side of the post. I remember Mickey Harte giving out about us after saying how negative we were and all we did was get bodies behind the ball when there was so much more to it that that. Funny how the game has gone since.

I seem to recall all the talk in the lead up to the Galway game in 06 was about the comeback of the great Ja Fallon. 1st high ball in and Gary Connaghton took man and ball out of the air. Ja Fallin wobbled off the pitch! Dessie scored a cracker on the corner flag against Cork in the league. Think it was 2000 or 2001 on a damp miserable day, that's one that sticks out in my mind.

Great thread...Countless Dessie scores, I remember seeing him throw dummies and kick impossible scores on so many occasions..in his early twenties he was incredible. Shocko got a rocket against Cork in the League final back in 2001 I think it was, we got 2 or 3 goals that day..Flanagan was mesmerising, he dropped the shoulder taking on defences in top gear and they always fell for it, cracked a screamer against the crossbar against Dublin in 2000 after beating 4 or 5 lads, shame it didn't go in..Best score for me hands down is Heslins goal against Meath, the movement from the back to the front and then the courage to run it and bury it, legend.

Sorry 2003 was the league final against Cork I think..how good was Shocko aswell, could have had an All Star himself and Rory were the best midfield in the country for a couple of years I reckon

I remember Anthony Tohill saying that Martin Flanagan wasnt the most graceful of players but was a big man and hard to handle.

The first part of that was the most inaccurate and ridiculous piece of analysis i ever heard from a pundit

I think 2001 Div 2 League Final was against Cork. 2003 was against Limerick. Also remember Dermot Bannon having a storming game in Navan when we beat Dublin in 2008 in that final. Looked a great prospect at that time but picked up bad injuries I think.
