Galway v Sligo

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Sligo or Carrick aren't capable of holding a final and thats why the 2010 final was in Castlebar. Sligo were given the option of playing it in Castlebar or Roscommon in return for not being given home advantage.

well done sligo shows the team on their day can complete with anyone, Had a feeling it would be close there was no way a Roscommon type callopse was on the cards..

best of luck in final

fair play lads didn't think you had any chance. sligo football is in a good place, win the province in 2007, 3 great games v mayo and galway last year and finish runners up and now you will be runners up at the very least this year. hopefully you can do it i think mayo have won it enough!

Congratulations to Sligo for an excellent result on Saturday! Great second half in particular. Onwards and upwards for the final.

Yep lloks ike i was wrong about venue, feel foolish now, i was convinced it would be in Castlebar if it were Mayo/Sligo , i apologize for my flippant remarks regarding this issue as i was wrong and should of made sure i had the right info.

Now with Mayo not having home advantage i believe that is a massive plus for Sligo, changes the whole analysis. Sligo will have more support, it will be like a home game for them in that way as Mayo fans can be fickle and will not travel to the hyde for a Sligo match.

I would not be as confident now of winning connacht , still would think we should have enough but like i say certainly not as confident now.

So have we figured it out yet guys?!... Assuming we get past Leitrim will it be the Hyde or McHale park?

It's Mchale Park if we're playing mayo or if Leitrim prob be Hyde Park

datsrite is spot on, Sligo or Leitrim can't stage a Final as need a 30,000 stadium. Sligo chose McHale 2 years ago against Rossies, and now Mayo have home advantage against Sligo

As i stated before it will be a neutral venue - end of discussion.

Lads would you ever quit talking through your hoops regarding the Connacht Final Venue when you obviously havent a clue what you are on about. The Connacht Final, if Sligo OR Leitrim are involved, will be played at a neutral venue. Otherwise the home/away rule applies. Mayo played Sligo at Markievicz Park the last time the sides met, therefore Mayo are technically the 'home' team for the Connacht Final, that is of course IF they manage to beat Leitrim. Therefore, Mayo will have to choose the neutral venue, and so they can opt for either Roscommon or Salthill. It is their call. It would most likely be Roscommon. That is THE official position as told by a Connacht Council offical. Sheesh! Well done to Sligo on a fantastic display particularly in the 2nd half. The Costello/Kelly/Marren axis looks particularly devastating if they get adequate supply of ball. We really do have some of the most clinical forwards around at the moment when you consider the ratio of chances taken versus possession, and considering also the fact that for 40 minutes of the 70 we were beaten out the gate at mid-field. Thought T Taylor shored up the middle when he came in, and Pat Hughes and Shane McManus seemed to grow in confidence as the 2nd half wore on. Best of luck to Leitrim against the "God Help Us" brigade. Would really like so see a changing of the gaurd in Connacht in terms of the Final pairing. Somehow I have my doubts though.

One of my favourite moments on Sat was Ewing's treble hop and not pulled for it, if anyone wants to see it happened in 48th minute and is on the Saturday game

I hope I'm wrong as I'd love not to have to go to Castlebar (sorry Leitrim) but my understanding was that home and away applied for all Connacht matches, but if Sligo/Leitrim were at home for final it would be moved to neutral venue because of capacity issues. Sligo/Leitrim then get to keep the home venue for next time the counties meet as a result of having to move to neutral venue.

Sligo were scheduled home advantage in 2007 and 2010 but got moved to Hyde Park (Hyde is nearest venue for Sligo and Leitrim, unless Roscommon were in final). That has been my understanding for years and I've seen nothing to disprove this - Sligo played Mayo in Castlebar in 1997 Connacht final, which appears to disprove the neutral venue point.

If it transpires that it is a neutral venue, it will have to be Hyde Park.

By the way if Sligo play the way they played the second half on Saturday they will be very hard beat, regardless of venue - it was Sligo's first Championship win in Galway.

I stand corrected. I've just read in Mayo News online that there was an agreement made in 1997 that Sligo/Leitrim would play finals in neutral venue. So Sligo's 1997 final in Castlebar must have been before this agreement.

Bring it on!!!!!

Well done Sligo. No complaints but i disagree that Galway are very poor. That is not doing Sligo justice. We are on a slow upward curve and our time will defintely come. Ye have every chance in the final whoever ye meet. For the record all provincial finals involving Sligo or Leitrim or both are always held at neutral venues. Cannot see why some Mayo folk thought they would have home advantage as this arrangement has been in place for a number of years. We played Leitrim in the 1998 semi away and when we met in the 2000 final it was in the Hyde. Similarly we met Sligo in the 2000 semi and had to go to to Castlebar to play them when we next met in the 2002 final.

Its official - Neutral venue whether its Mayo or Leitrim against us in the final.

And thank you Kiloughter, I agree - Galway are not a bad team. But its amazing, any time they or the likes of Mayo get beaten by a team the likes of Sligo, they seem to become a bad team overnight..................Hmmmm!
