Best / most competitive club championship

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I am biased of course but I believe Derry has one of the top and most completive clubs champs in the country. Anyone know of any others that are as competitive. 7 different winners since 2000. 22 winners in total as compared to say Armagh have had 1 other winner besides cross since 1996. Taking nothing away from cross here by the way. I hear Galway has a very good standard as well generally.

Mayo, Dublin, Donegal, Tyrone, Kerry and Cork would all have very competitive championships. Hardly a coincidence that they produce pretty good county teams.

Has to be Galway hurling. Loads of teams capable of winning nit only the county, but the AI as well. No other county comes close these days

Yeah Derry football looks pretty serious. And they seem to knock lumps out of each other in Tyrone- great going by Trillick to reach a final having been in intermediate last year. Dublin, Mayo, Donegal always seem to be competitive.

Galway hurling has to be up there. The champions are nearly always competitive in the All Ireland series even if it helps not having to play a provincial match.

The Tipp championship can be good but is so long and convoluted. We surely have the biggest senior championship in the country- can anyone top 32 teams?

I'd imagine the Dublin championship is really stringer. It seems to be very competitive and whatever team wins it seems to at minimum gte to the Leinster final. Also they have the adcnatage of having intercounty players from other counties playing in their chapionship which helps improve the quality.

Do you reckon that the standard of the county championship has gone backwards in the last decade? Mayo clubs were very strong in the All-Ireland club championship for about a decade from the mid-90s on, with Cross and Ballina winning All-Ireland titles, and several others reaching finals in that time. But other than Castlebar's run last year, Mayo clubs have been well-beaten in Connacht for the last 8 or 9 years. Is this a reflection on the standard of club ball in Mayo, or rather than other counties such as Ros and Galway have had outstanding champions during that period?

Round all

Yes. I doubt anyone has more teams than your senior championship. We have 27 I think. How does it work in Tipp.

Okay bennybunny... Don't say I didn't warn you...

The Tipperary Senior Hurling Championship is spilt in to two sections, officially known as Roinn I and Roinn II. There are 16 teams in each section divided in to groups of 4. Roinn I is the "strong" section, the top 2 from each group in this section go through to the Round of 16 (officially named by the Co. Board in their infinite wisdom as the Preliminary Quarter Finals). The bottom team in each group is relegated to Roinn II for the following season.

Roinn II is the "weaker" section, each group winner goes through to the Preliminary QF and is promoted to Roinn I for the following season. In an effort to reduce the size of the championship 2 teams from Roinn II are relegated following a Best of 3 Rock-Paper-Scissors competition with only the Intermediate champions promoted.

DEEP BREATH

Now if you're preceptive and proficient in your 4 times tables you'll notice that all leaves us with 12 teams in the "Round of 16". The remaining slots are taken by the Divisional championships. These championships, vicious local faction fights, sorry... derbys, run parallel to the group stages. The 4 divisions- North, South, West and Mid (we have no East division, East Tipperary is now popularly known as Kilkenny) run their championships, coveted in their own right, in their own special convoluted way. The North division, the largest, win out though- the 14 teams are drawn in an open 1st round. The winners of this round are then drawn against the losers. Winners who win their second game go on to the next round, everyone who has won one and lost one playoff against each other. The numbers don't stack up so there's usually a few byes. Lovely stuff.

If you happen to qualify via the all county group stages and also win your division the extra spot goes to the next best team in your group... like a €4 scratch card- so many ways to win!

Mercifully that brings us to the Round of 16 (yeah... at this stage we've only got rid of half those teams) where things become fairly straightforward.

Howzat!?

The Dublin Club football championship is pretty good and its winners have done well at All Ireland level. The Dublin hurling championship leaves a bit to be desired I'm afraid.

The Meath Senior Championship has something like eight different winners since 2000.

Kerry County championship has had about 7 different winners in the last 15 years. That's pretty good consider Crokes recent dominance and South Kerry doing the same a few years back
The senior club championship has also had a fair mix of winners considering the strength of the likes of Crokes and other county c'ship clubs in it.

God Almighty!

If the football is played in a similar way, its no wonder the final is on St Stephen's day...I think if I lived in Tipperary would just ask to be woken up when ye get to the quarter finals (or perhaps that round is known as preliminary semi-finals)..either way when there are 8 teams left an one can make sense of what will happen..
