Ultimate Last Minute Goals

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

My most memorable is Barney Rock's 1983 AI semi last second equaliser against Cork in Croker. I was in the canal end and all hell broke loose.

Seamus Darby's goal to sink Kerry.

Kevin Mc's goal to swing an almost lost game back to Dublin in 2011 and similar in 2013 against Kerry

Eoghan O'Gara's last minute equaliser in the league against Mayo last year.

Darby's was probably the ultimate considering the occasion and the significance of it on Kerry who were on verge of 5 in a row. Absolutely devastating and was a killer blow to what would have been something special.

Kevin Foley v Dublin 1991

It was a fairytale. 4 games and it ended in hollywood fashion, plus it was well worked.

Graham Geraghty v Louth 2002 - Thought he should have went for the point and send the game in extra time, but not Graham Geraghty,he crashed the ball into the net after great work from Ollie Murphy,Meath were terrible that day and should have lost.

Monaghan v Meath - dv2 final, good game were Meath lead for most of it.Monaghan needed a goal and lofted the ball into the area.Mark Ward went up to catch the ball and dropped it into the net.The beginning of some success for Monaghan.

Ollie Murphy 2001 v Westmeath - The game was up,Meath had not played well, but Ollie Murphy scored a last min goal, that he had no right to score! Meath won the replay and made the All-Ireland final that year.

Oh good Jayzus yeah, that one didn't cross my mind, erased from memory, but undoubtedly one of the games classic last minute winners. A moment I will never forget but was privileged to be at all of those games.

Seamus Darby's goal has to be number one. Clare footballers beat Cork with a last minute goal in the 1997 championship. They were 4 points down with a couple of minutes left and they won two close-in frees which they tapped over the bar. In the dying seconds they won another free about 30 yards out. Everyone expected the free taker (Martin Flynn?) to blast it at the net but instead he played a short pass, took the return and squeezed it through a thicket of legs to the bottom corner. I was really impressed by the calmness and composure shown by Clare in those last few minutes - most teams would have gone for goal from all 3 frees and would probably have ended with nothing to show from any of them.

I witnessed one this year. It was in the ulster under-21 first round between Cavan and Donegal. Cavan going for 5-in-a-row ulsters. We were winning by 2 points and 2 minutes of injury time played. Ryan McHugh scores a goal for Donegal. Game over

Not only was D'Arby's goal last-minute and historic it was a hell of a goal, some finish. If Messi scores a last minute winner v Chile tonight of even half of the quality of D'Arby's the Interweb will surely break !

"2007 Tommy Murphy Cup Final
We were two points up in Extra Time with the clock in to added time. Wicklow got the ball in their own defence, ran and passed it the whole way up the wing, played her inside to Tommy Gill who hit the back of the net with the last kick of the game to win by a point."

OffsideRule we were only a point up, Wicklow won by two. Was heartbreaking though.

You are correct M Lyster and my memory was out a wee bit - was won by two in the end with the last gasp goal.

Kind of surprised that Johnny Dooley's last 5 mins vs Limk in '94 hasn't been mentioned. How could anyone, especially Limk ppl, ever forget it? Sickening! But that has to be the most outrageous finish of all time?

Brian Murphy in 98. When all you want is a point by any means necessary and you get a goal to win a Leinster at last..... nothing will ever beat that. Especially as John McDermott nearly beat 15 Kildare men on his own that day. That memory has gotten Kildare fans through the last 17 years and it looks like it might have to get us through the next 17 years too!

I was at that game. Coming from 2 points and one man down in what must have been the 3rd minute of extra time for Micheal Kelly to score a cracker of a goal and win the cup.

Here are a few thoughts on some of the memorable late goals. I hope my recollections are accurate.

1981. Johnny Flaherty's goal put Offaly 1 pt. up. Still time for 2 more pts. If Galway had got them, they would have won. Instead, Danny Owens and Padraig Horan stretched Offaly's winning margin to 3 pts.

1982. After Seamus Darby's goal, there was still time for a wide for Offaly (Gerry Carroll) and a shot/cross from Tom Spillane.

2005. Mark Ward didn't so much drop the ball into the net as punch it there in a failed attempt to score an 'own point' and seal a 1 pt. win for Meath. His 'own goal' turned a 2 pt. Meath lead into a 1 pt. win for Monaghan.

1991. As an earlier poster said, Kevin Foley's goal was an equaliser; the winning point came from Beggy. The goal came at the end of a move involving 6 consecutive hand passes; I can't understand why anyone would change the rules to eliminate similar scores.

In 1979, Magheracloone were doomed to relegation from Intermediate to Junior in Monaghan. They finished last in the league by a distance.

However, they managed to win the quarter and semi final of the championship to reach the final against Clontibret.

A wind assisted 4 pt. half time lead for Magheracloone was gradually turned into a 2 pt. lead for Clontibret, when with time almost up, Magheracloone scored a goal with their only attack of the 2nd half.

The win earned promotion to Senior and avoided the drop to Junior. The goal was worth two promotions.

I could see the funny side benched, just about, but I was sickened at 3 men watching a man taking a free from midfield and complacently leaving free Rossies at the back. Maybe complacency set in as we had won the league a few weeks earlier. As much as I was annoyed at our lads I admired that Roscommon team for never giving up. I was shouting for them against Galway in Tuam stadium a few weeks earlier.

I was there that day, remember Gerry Lohan fired the ball into the bottom corner about five minutes into injury-time. Inexplicably, about 30 seconds before that, a Mayo forward (I remember who he is, but shall nonetheless remain nameless!) flicked the ball over his head into the path of a Roscommon player, rather than simply catching the ball unmarked. Ros swept up the field and buried it in the net.

Should have also mentioned that there were three goals in the last ten minutes or so of that 2001 Connacht final: Ros scored one to edge ahead, Mayo then scored one down the other end (think it was David Nestor?) and then Ros won it with the last kick of the game. Great final, even if it didn't feel like it travelling back the N60 afterwards!
