Cillian O'Connor - just how good can he be?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

He's a class act alright... but he's on his own up there at times

Trick to beating Mayo is discipline - avoid frees in his scoring range and Mayo struggle

Mayo will def challenge next year though

They will avoid both Dublin & Kerry up to a potential final

At this stage and on current form... it wouldn't be outrageous to suggest that Mayo would be favs to make the final on that side of the draw

If they had a few more class acts like COC...

Now it all depends how Mayo can come back next year - but if they keep their heads and can remain strong...

I don't see anyone stopping them before the final (BASED PURELY ON 2015)

Let's see how they fair during the league... IMO they have a shallow panel.. any big injuries at club / National league duties could have a major impact on them

I'd take Cillian in a heartbeat for Dublin.

Mark my words when this lad comes into his prime he's gonna be unreal.

_____

He could play on any team...

Very valid point jimbo. Certain re: 2015 anyway. Mayo played with just 2 inside which I couldn't understand. They're a fairly attack minded team and were going long to a big ma and yet they left themselves heavily outnumbered. I could understand dropping a half forward back alright. It also meant that nobody was specifically assigned to track McMahon's runs forward in the replay which cost them dearly. They were asking too much of O'Connor and O'Shea, they looked better when they had Moran on and left 3 up top.

I don't think anyone in Mayo has him down as a "great" just yet. He is a very good player and absolutely vital for us. Still has not reached his peak and has had his injury set backs most notable in the 2013 final. His brother really stepped up to the plate but we need another 2 forwards.

Yeah 100% Roundball

Moran caused Dublin a lot of trouble

His introduction in the first game could have won them an AI place... if it wasn't for John Small

They just don't have the options of Dublin / Kerry

It will be interesting to see what position AOS takes up next year... if they move him out it'll just limit them even more up front

But TBH his impact there against top teams... not so sure about that

The fact the Mayo had to move him in there in the first place tells a story...

Mayo just have too many things that need to go in their favour....

The lack of options is a major hindrance

Don't think he was bad against Dublin jimbo- he was well marked but still did reasonably well with a crap supply of ball and next to no support.

On a semi-related matter... what is the story with Alan Freeman? Neither Horan nor Holmes/Connelly seem to fully trust him for some reason. He has the one thing a lot of Mayo forwards don't have- the ability to take on and beat his man.

Another setback for Cillian, out for 5 months after surgery on his knee which had been giving him trouble since last March. All the best to Cillian in his recovery. Poor lad seems to be injured every winter but as long as he is back healthy and fit for championship 2016 then that is all that matters.

Bad news to be out of action for that long alright. He'll do well to be back to his best for championship.

Never a good sign when a young player picks up so many injuries.

He has youth on his side

Should help his recovery

Not ideal prep and Mayo will miss him a lot

Huge player for them and they'll win nothing without him being 100%

They just can't afford to lose a forward of his stature

Worrying for Mayo alright, they need him firing on all cylinders or no cigar!

Will give other a chance to step up. Hopefully Evan Regan will stay fit and impress along with young players like Conor Loftus and Tommy Conroy.

It ain't the worst news, he will be fit and hungry for the business end of the season. He doesnt need to be there in March in the winter weather, he has nothing to prove. Let someone else step up and hopefully take their opportunity then we got him to come back in. Onwards and Upwards.

He has suffered a lot of injuries due to being overplayed. HAs been playing Senior club and county, sigerson, U21 club and county for the past 3 years.

A good 6 months rest will do him wonders. Mayo don't need him for the league and the fact he will miss the sigerson this year will be even better for Mayo in the long run.

PLayers like Cillian should be limited to playing for 3 teams per year if the GAA are serious about player burnout.

Could be very good for him. Hopefully surgery goes well, he'll sit out the League probably and be refreshed and ready to go come Championship.

This lad is just going to get better and better imo.

Not playing any football for 6 months may prove to be unhelpful.. only time will tell

He didn't get to see much Sigerson cup football this spring as his side were knocked out in the first game. I think he only played 3 of Mayos 7 NFL games this year.
