Case Study: Longford Football To Connaught?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Will there be a benefit to Longford in joining the Connaught Championship? At the moment they need to win 3 games to make a Leinster final.

If they moved to Connaught, they might favour their chances of making the provincial semi-finals.

It seems like the Kerryman is invoking an 'to hell or to Connaught' position on behalf of Longford GAA.

I'd be more worried about Kerry's easy route through Munster...what a bloody joke that is.

We would welcome any team into Connacht. Galway fans would take the five best in the country too if we could kick one team out in exchange. Offer is always open.

I wouldn't be keen on bastardising the provinces like what has happened in hurling. I always find it strange that Longford is in Leinster though. Connacht would suit them better in a sporting sense and be handier travelling to provincial games for fans.

Put Kerry in Leinster. Move every other county in Leinster. Now we have two competitive provincial championships.

Offaly and Laois can join Munster.

I'd always be protective of the provincial championships. i always think there's a special feeling about it and for the first time in a long time i got to see it first hand at a personal level this year even if it didn't go our way. however, i don't see anything wrong with this. but probably better asking the likes of Longford themselves. given the situation of Leinster at the moment, i can't see a few counties being too bothered about leaving it as the aura has long since gone.

Kerry can form their own provincial championship with Dublin. Best of three rounds.

If Longford in Connaught was trialled for a few years and found to be relatively successful. It might encourage others to move as well in the interest of a more streamlined and fair championship for all.

Not a bad idea when you think of it. Bring Longford and Offaly into Connacht and move Galway, who have set a precedent with the hurlers, into Leinster. Galway with a population equal to the combined totals of Roscommon, Sligo and Mayo have a huge advantage as it is and with the continuous success of their underage teams look set to dominate Connacht into the future. Galway, to keep them competitive should be playing against counties with a similar population such as Meath and Kildare. To make it fairer still you could then split Mayo in two for the purposes of the Connacht championship. If one of the teams were lucky enough to win Connacht they would them amalgamate for the rest of the championship. If I were wording that motion for Congress would it have to be in irish?

Good idea. Longford would actually have a chance of provincial glory and I'd imagine they'd find it easier to get the best 25 players in the county to commit. It would narrow the margin of teams competing in Leinster vs Connaught so would be good on that front too. The only other change I'd make is Kilkenny footballers being allowed play for Carlow at intercounty level.

Thank you for seceding Longford to us but they would do better in Munster and could make final. Why not just scrap the provinces instead of putting bandaids all over the place? Kerry like the current arrangement of course. It's called Connacht in the west btw. Get rid of black n tan outfits while your at it, centenary year of their carnage and all.

I'm not sure what side of the political divide you come from but west of the Shannon we play in the Connacht Championship, not some anglo colonial variant.

Where the feck is Connaught?

Hardly fare to send Longford to somewhere that doesn't exist!

I don't think that'll serve them well at all..

Good point Yew Tree above.. it is a joke! happy to see it got plenty of green thumbs. It'll be ignored of course. Doesn't suit the OCD like agenda at play.. how many threads is it now?

Poor aul HS getting plagued by it

Kerry and their golden ticket wha.. imagine having that route for so long. The Semifinal highway... but ssssshhh it's all down to their fairy dust ways, nothing to see here!
