Roscommon hurlers 2018

(Oldest Posts First)

Good to get up and running with easy win in round 1 of the NHL yesterday. The superb Hyde park surface suited our game against Louth who in truth were poor opposition. Daniel Glynn MOTM with 0-13 scored Gearóid Keenan,Naos Connaughton and 2nd half sub Warren Boyle scored our 3 goals.

Yes good win and looked impressive yesterday. We beat Mayo Roscommon by 10 points in challenge the week before this game so it seems we are moving in the right direction and should be aiming for promotion

Roscommon should try to get promoted and keep building on the hurling front. Christy Ring with Kildare and Wicklow looming maybe a different animal nut it's where our hurlers need to aspire too in the future. For the moment another win in Monaghan would be great. Well done to all concerned.

Away draw with Monaghan gives us 3 points from 2 games so far. Next we play Longford in Hyde Park this Sunday who lost to Monaghan by 4 points so this game could be a lot closer than some think.

Ridiculous and off the wall comment. A lot of great work is going on for young players in the existing hurling clubs and also in the Primary and Secondary schools. Many clubs especially in the North of the County are struggling to get football teams out at underage which is leading to amalgations of not only two clubs but three clubs in places. It highly unlikely that it is possible to introduce club hurling as well therefore. Grant it alright some populous areas of Ros like Monksland could possibly establish underage hurling but it is up to people to get it going there and thwre is a lot of competitio n in that area already with soccer and rugby not to mention Gaelic Football. Like I see you have a Kilkenny pen name...well how is the underage football development going in Kilkenny? In an ideal world we'd have hurling in every book and cranny of the County but sometimes there are many factors simply restricting it and lack of numbers is a huge one in a football mad county.

I think the county board should look at setting up area based teams, for example, Castlerea, Glaveys, Eire Og, Croans, but the main thing I guess would be getting people to buy in to it in those area's. Think Croke Park should also help and provide funding for the setting up of new clubs, (coaching, equipment). Most kids will be up for trying new sports, I know when I was a young fella if someone had set up a club where I was from I would have taken it up. Had an uncle from Tipp who gave us hurleys as kids and thought us the basic's of lifting and striking. Ended up playing some hurling in London, but really regretted not being aware of how to defend myself properly. Its a shame to see how our Hurlers have been dropping down the pecking order, I remember when we were competing for All Ireland B titles most years , and when there was a Connacht final v Galway for a few years.

Its been a bad year for our senior hurlers both in the league and championship. I took at the panels that have been togged out for games and its clear for whatever reason a number of our best hurlers are not committing to the county team and this is a issue the county board need to address before it only get worse.

On Saturday we face neighbours Mayo in a do or die game, they have played in a higher league than us but go into this game like ourselves without a championship win. I would hope home advantage counts for us and we can finish a disappointing season on a high.

Would be great if our hurlers can upset the odds tomorrow (currently 5/1 to win) and stay up at Christy Ring cup level. Best of luck to Roscommon.

Great win for the hurlers. On top throughout the game. Great displays from Keane the keeper, Hardiman and throughout the field in fairness. Good crowd and a step forward for the hurling fraternity after a difficult year. Poor form of Ros gaa in not keeping the game updated on Twitter but such is what the hurlers have to put up with in recent times.
