Rathnew v st Vincent's - 3 Like(s)
Congratulations to Rathnew on a fantastic victory. They gave it everything and all I could wonder at was how they could maintain their stamina over the full game . They were a joy to watch and were full value for their win. Vincents were unaccustomed to the constant tackling and chasing of the Rathnew players. Anyone that was at the Dublin final was, as i was, amazed at the lack of intensity and the slowness of the Ballymun efforts, giving Vincents plenty of time to regroup and defend..Rathnew gave them no room and defended in numbers and broke at speed. Their determination, love of the jersey and never say die ,especially after the goal is to be commmended. What a Rathnew transformation when compared to their earlier matches in the championship when many of us were writing them off and many felt that that time had finally caught up with their established players.. What composure on the ball in the last five minutes with Vincents players unable to get their hands on the ball as Leighton and his players played "keep ball"with countless passes amongst themselves.
The victory for me ranks amongst the famous standout vicories by Wicklow representatives over the years in Aughrim, such as Wicklows juniors victory over a star studded Galway team ,on their all Ireland semi final victory before claiming all Ireland glory against Kerry in Croke Park, or the famous senior victory over national league winners Laois in the famous battle of Aughrim, or Baltinglass 's victory over the Larry Tomkins led Castlehaven on their way to winning the all Ireland club.
Rathews players, management and supporters must be immensely proud this week and their victory must inspire confidence for another mammoth task against Moorefield. We hope that Leighton can bring all the attributes of his game to the new Wicklow panel under John Evans as we look forward to 2018. Well done on a marvellous win. It will shorten the winter for all Wicklow gaels.
