Westmeath Hurling 2020

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Lot of negativity on the 2019 thread.

So time to draw a line under that.

What's the team for the Carlow match?

Any new faces ye'd like to see included?

Galway are always vulnerable in the first game. They've gone way back. Throw everything at it and see can we get a result.

No handy games is there. Suppose it will go one of two ways. Steel them for the task in hand come championship time or leave them picking their morale off the floor and vulnerable.

Galway gone way back ? I doubt it. New manager too so should bring a bounce.
I hear our lads are working hard and going well under our own new manager.
They are there on merit and it will be a great barometer of where they are at.
No easy games in Walsh Cup either.

Considering that Galway were eliminated from Leinster hurling championship last year because they only beat Carlow by 6-7 points and ultimately lost out on score difference and as they have an excellent new manager whom they will surely be out to impress I'd imagine they will be keen to beat us by a considerable margin. They're still one of the top sides in the country and All Ireland contenders.

I couldn't agree more. This is what everyone wants, to be competing against the best sides. I doubt the lads involved will be fearful, and if they are they shouldn't be involved. There might be a beating or two taken but I would hope the team can step up the the necessary level. All the best looking forward.

A winning start today wasn't at it but heard we played a good second half in horrible conditions. Anyone there?

Couldn't make it either but heard the same. Not a great day for hurling.

Nice to see a number of new faces and fringe players get a proper chance. Good start for O'Brien with a win today. Dublin at home next week will be a big step up in quality.

December hurling, what is the point?

I'd much prefer to see the players playing matches than attending endless training sessions. Presumably the coaches learn more from observing the players in matches than in training. The time of the year is irrelevant. The players need matches to prepare for the league which starts early in 2020.

Any thoughts on the weekend?

Pretty poor at times apart from Price. At least we battled hard in second half

We lost a heap of puckouts in a row at one stage in second half

Heard on Midlands that manager said that was 7 of Dublin's championship team? Wouldn't think that was the case

Killian Doyle a huge loss to us, no penetration up front

Laois up next on Sunday. I know the lads have been training well over the christmas so I hope they can give them a good rattle.

Maybe if they put out their third team like Dublin did...

We weren't a million miles off Laois last year if you look back on it. 15mins to go was only couple of points in it. Their bench drove them home

They are prob a bit better than us to be fair tho. Will be an interesting game to gauge where we are at before the league

Anyone at game in Boris in Ossory today?
Good result but Laois only had four of Mcdonagh final team to our six.

Was there. Never really sparked to life as a game. Think Laois had 5 of their McDonagh team. Westmeath played well enough without ever really hitting the high notes.

One week out from the trip to Galway. Looks like Galway played their second team in Walsh Cup final today. Will they do the same next weekend?

Some rumours of unrest in our panel but could be just usual January stuff

Anyone making the trip across?

Galway will probably go experimental again and will probably still get over the line. What sort of unrest have you heard? Reports from the camp is everything is flying.
