A second-half hat-trick from All-Star full-forward Seamus Callanan sent Tipperary on the road to a hard-earned victory against Mary Immaculate in this preliminary round clash at Dr Morris Park.

Played in inclement weather conditions, the students gave as good as they got against their more illustrious opponents for most of the contest.

With 10 minutes to go the sides were level on 1-14 apiece but the Drom & Inch star secured a winning start to 2015 for Eamon O'Shea's side when he pounced for three goals in as many minutes shortly after.

O'Shea fielded an experimental side with Joe O'Dwyer, Stephen Maher, Liam Treacy, Sean Maher and David Butler making their first starts.

They played second fiddle to the Eamonn Cregan managed visitors early on and they trailed by 0-10 to 0-11 at the halfway stage.

Newcomer Sean Maher and Tipp panelist Niall O'Meara, who lined out at right half-forward for Mary I, exchanged goals early in the second-half before Callanan grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck.

The Hurler of the Year nominee finished with 3-7 (0-4, 1 65) to his name while Limerick's David Reidy hit 0-10 (eight frees) for the students.
