Tyrone v Down

I think Tyrone by 4 or 5 , Down are only a shadow of themselves without Marty Clarke. I would have said Monaghan to beat Tyrone in the first round proper but McManus is a huge blow for them. Derry v Tyrone final.

Tyrone at home should win hard to know if down has progressed this season they are capable of a win like they did in celtic park last year but were in div 1 tyrone by 4pts,derry donegal think will be tight we dont do well against the blanket defence and thats a worry,are donegal back to 2012 form is the key question?could be a draw

No disrespect but if Tyrone can't beat down easily in Healy park then they have no earn trying to win an Ulster championship or challenge for the all Ireland. While it's championship football and anything can happen, down don't have the team they had a few years ago and are one of the weaker teams in Ulster. Tyrone should win this by at least 10 points on home turf if they are to be taken seriously as challengers. Good luck to down and if they pull off an upset then fair play to them but there can't be anything other than a Tyrone win and some shooting practice into the bargain!

Can only see Tyrone winning this one handily enough. Down I think have the players to do well enough, but they just don't seem to have the consistency to pull it out week after week. If we do produce the miracle we manage every few years, I expect us to go on to play Monaghan and get wiped off the pitch, simply because Down to not have the consistency to put two performances together.

You would swear Ulster was a straight forward formality like the Munster and Connacht Championships. It rarely works out the way it should. Who would've predicted Monaghan to win it last season? Or Donegal in 2011? There are no great shakes in Ulster at present, that's why I find it assuming that some Tyrone fans come on here and patronize Down by saying things like 'if Tyrone can't beat Down easy' then they don't deserve to win Ulster and won't challenge in the All-Ireland. Tyrone are a decent side, but they always do produce decent sides, rarely great sides. They are beatable, and Down have every chance of beating them next weekend. It's the Ulster championship, anyone can beat anyone in it, and that's what makes it so unique.

I agree with what your saying.

There is certainly nothing straightforward about Tyrone beating Down in this game. When focused, Down are a extremely formidable side.

I've been Impressed with Tyrones attacking play this year, however a little concerned by their defence and how they switch off for either an entire first half or 2nd half of National League games ( See Dublin and Kerry games ).

This has the potential to be a classic match, I just had a weird feeling about this when the draw was made.

Very interested to see how this one goes. Tyrone have been playing in a division that has embraced attacking football and we have averaged around 20 points a game. Down have been playing in a division where a pragmatic approach was taken. Down averaged about 15 points a game. Normally you would expect division 1 to prepare you better for championship football so it will be interesting to see if that is the case given the different approaches that teams took in both divisions.

Down's only win away from home this year was rather fortunate against Armagh whilst Tyrone had good home displays against West Meath and Mayo, with a narrow defeat to Dublin in the last game. I fancy this one to be tight for the first 50 minutes with Tyrone pulling away towards the end. Saying that I expected something similar to happen in 2008 and that never happened!

There's just not much hype in the Mourne County, very quiet build up towards this game. I wouldn't say anyone is down in the dumps, but we're just realistic after what was a very average league campaign (Donegal and Louth games aside). Personally, this is how I would prefer it. By all accounts the squads training has went really well and there's a good camaraderie within the group. I know if whatever Down team plays next Sunday brings their A game, then there isn't gonna be more than a point between the sides. But, if we produce anything less we're leaving Ulster for the back door. Same could probably be said for Tyrone, but Tyrone are more consistent than ourselves and therefore are the team more likely to bring their A game. The bookies have Tyrone at 1/3 and Down at 3/1. Tyrone hot favourites.

Its good for Down to go into this match under the radar.If Down do play their

Brend, I agree. I'll be surprised if its anything other than a defensive dog fight. Like I mentioned before, it'll be similar to the Down v Donegal game last season with only a few points separating the teams throughout. We shot ourselves in the foot that time. Our forwards need to be clinical because Tyrone have a sharp full-forward line that will cause damage. It's your full back line and midfield that you should be worried about. I noticed weaknesses in both areas during the league. Peter Turley will most likely operate as Down's 'third' midfielder. His job is basically to just break up play, win ball and lay off. Very little natural ability for a county player, but he's very effective and could be a crucial player in this game.

Mournearmy, come Sunday afternoon the league will mean jackshit, this is the Ulster championship, it is unique, there is nothing like it and I can't wait for throw in, may the best team win and safe journey to all Down supporters travelling up for the game. Hope the weather holds up as well.

I would expect Tyrone to pull away in the last 10 minutes, wouldn't be surprised if Down went in at HT ahead. Tyrone's bench should finish the job.
