Based on the majority of what we've seen in 2024, hard to argue with that train of thought... moodoo (Monaghan) - Posts: 462 - 14/05/2024 12:14:51 2544688 Link 1 |

The long grass is usually where we feel most comfortable. I'd be expecting a decent performance regardless of result.

You'd be a brave man to predict a starting 15 as noone has a clue who is available fitness wise. The hope is that o hanlon mcenespie and bannigan are all back. I'd expect lavelle to move back to midfield to replace Darren Hughes with Duffy full back. Management can bring in younger players to give some pace to the side like mooney Jones Hamill etc but he is limited in defence where the real problems have been all year. The worry there is that some established players just don't look up to it at this level any more and there are no real alternatives. seanie08 (Monaghan) - Posts: 1882 - 14/05/2024 14:41:44 2544733 Link 1 |

Agree that's about the best team we have - if everybody's available. Good forward line and a quality very attacking half back line. But as you say defensively looks like we can be picked apart by any decent forward line never mind one with some of the best forwards in the country. Vinny will need to have some type of defensive sweeper or plan in place to provide additional cover for the full back line in particular. Darren is a huge loss to that plan. to be fair this is a great team on paper. id maybe suggest bringing in mccarville to play in the middle and free up lavelle to sweep...likely sacrificing jones/woods for that who can still make a big impact off the bench

Would agree with that or McAnespie plays deeper. Will lavelle pick up D Clifford? He did a great job on Con.

O Toole has been very disappointing this yr in my opinion, thought mcphilips would have been a better candidate for that position, I'd try Irwin midfield with Mohan , on paper the complete panel seems strong , hopefully Ryan McAnespie is fit to play , it won't be easy but definitely doable if all clicks

Big q is who is going to play that sweeper plus one position that Darren plays so well? My money would be on Dessie Ward to start midfield and play that role, partnering Mohan in midfield. This would allow Lavelle to stay in full back on Clifford and Duffy to pick up SOS and then O toole/Mc Anespie out the field following Paudie Clifford. monaghanmad (Monaghan) - Posts: 410 - 15/05/2024 17:12:52 2544967 Link 1 |
The optimist in me always thinks we have a chance no matter who Monaghan play. We have some top class players, a good manager, we tend to play well as underdogs and lots of others thoughts fill my head in the run up to a big game like Kerry. sleater (Monaghan) - Posts: 178 - 16/05/2024 10:33:40 2545054 Link 1 |
Its not a big game, we beat Meath and we are through, very little talk about these games in the National press, most people don't even understand how this format works all badly market and its just very flat. patmouse (Monaghan) - Posts: 122 - 16/05/2024 12:56:46 2545090 Link 0 |
Maybe so… but looking forward to getting down there. It's still Kerry, it's still championship.

in a scenario where we beat meath and meath beat louth and louth beat us then the kerry game becomes the most important game as far as i know...head to head surely goes out the window and the score difference of the kerry game is vital...i think a scenario like this is very likely knowing monaghan this year - we'll get a draw against kerry, think we're class and then lose to meath and louth...also very possible but ill stay optimistic MalsBalls (Monaghan) - Posts: 222 - 16/05/2024 16:33:31 2545148 Link 0 |
I reckon it'll be Kerry followed by Monaghan and then the winner of the Louth/Meath game who progress from the group and fingers crossed its Louth. Shearer (Louth) - Posts: 903 - 17/05/2024 13:46:16 2545274 Link 0 |
With the exception of Darren. That's as strong as we have been since the all Ireland semi final. Loads lf pace and direct running from the half forward line. shaggylegend (Monaghan) - Posts: 1948 - 17/05/2024 18:00:57 2545317 Link 1 |
I doubt it but good luck to the lads
