You'd be a brave man to predict a starting 15 as noone has a clue who is available fitness wise. The hope is that o hanlon mcenespie and bannigan are all back. I'd expect lavelle to move back to midfield to replace Darren Hughes with Duffy full back. Management can bring in younger players to give some pace to the side like mooney Jones Hamill etc but he is limited in defence where the real problems have been all year. Good forward line and a quality very attacking half back line. But as you say defensively looks like we can be picked apart by any decent forward line never mind one with some of the best forwards in the country. Vinny will need to have some type of defensive sweeper or plan in place to provide additional cover for the full back line in particular. Darren is a huge loss to that plan. Big q is who is going to play that sweeper plus one position that Darren plays so well? My money would be on Dessie Ward to start midfield and play that role, partnering Mohan in midfield. This would allow Lavelle to stay in full back on Clifford and Duffy to pick up SOS and then O toole/Mc Anespie out the field following Paudie Clifford. Up front is the Big q, If mc carron starts we could drop mc manus with Bannigan picking up the right frees. Will be interesting to see who starts inside as i think we can realy get at the Kerry defence, will he go conservative with Irwin/Mc Nulty or go all out and play Jones, Hamill. Add onto that Bannigan, mc anespie and O hanlon and we look strong up top. If we get our running game going with Bannigan, O hanlon, mc carthy and mc anespie I think there is goals there for us. The optimist in me always thinks we have a chance no matter who Monaghan play. We have some top class players, a good manager, we tend to play well as underdogs and lots of others thoughts fill my head in the run up to a big game like Kerry. But a dose of reality is also needed. Monaghan's form has been terrible in 2024 with numerous flat, error strewn performances littered with unforced turnovers and wasteful shooting. Lots of injuries have blighted any semblance of a settled team. The team lacks pace in defence. We're very light for midfield options. We've an inexperienced goalie. Monaghan are certainly capable of pulling a performance out of the bag , but it's looking less likely as the season goes by. Beggan according to the Gaelic Life won't be about this weekend. The defence leaves me worried - O'Toole is a good player but not a man marker. Duffy has been an amazing stalwart but not the player he was and slowing down, same with Wylie. Will there be a surprise in the team/squad , maybe....I heard some of the this year's excellent U20 defenders have been added to the squad , but that might with a view to next season before they get a chance. Having some or all of Ward, McAnespie, O'Hanlon, Bannigan, Leonard, Hamill, Woods will help a lot. Against Cavan we started with workers in the half forward line and had no pace. Hamill, O'Hanlon and Bannigan bring such threat individually. Leonard if fit would help in midfield options as he's next best option after Mohan. I would highly doubt we will see Mansy and McCarron starting together again this year. I'd think Mooney and Jones will get game time during the group 4 games. I'm hoping Monaghan make it out the group and then in a one of play-off game we could make it to QF.
