This is as bad as the '79 semi-final. PolicemanFox (Monaghan) - Posts: 191 - 18/05/2024 15:42:54 2545409 Link 0 |
A dire 1st half performance… zero desire, engery.. we look a rudderless outfit…. I don't want to hear any more excuses from Vinnie.. needs to be serious questions asked of the current set up… mick2007 (Monaghan) - Posts: 571 - 18/05/2024 15:52:55 2545410 Link 0 |
Gives me no pleasure in saying it but serious questions need to be asked about mgmt after this total shambles. seanie08 (Monaghan) - Posts: 1883 - 18/05/2024 16:10:11 2545413 Link 0 |
Absolutely. Surely we should have just made it as horrible as possible.. drag all 15 behind the ball and make it a slugfest… instead we tried to kick pass the ball everywhere.

Looks like the Kerry lads had the mowers out yesterday and the long grass was well cut back. TearsIn85 (Monaghan) - Posts: 208 - 18/05/2024 16:50:57 2545421 Link 0 |
Inaccurate kick passing early on just handed the game to Kerry & ruined our confidence. Players returning from injury clearly not match fit. We missed 2 goal sitters but happy to keep it to 10 pts deficit in the end. At least 2nd half gives us something to build on. Loth will run through us unless we get our physicality back ! Never have I ever seen a worse 35mins in a Monaghan jersey. MonaghanMan44life (Monaghan) - Posts: 44 - 18/05/2024 17:43:15 2545428 Link 0 |
Definitely. A large part of the game is not making poor mistakes and Monaghan made a large number of unforced errors today. Once the players are on the field the management can't control this part of the play. PolicemanFox (Monaghan) - Posts: 191 - 18/05/2024 17:45:11 2545429 Link 1 |
Excellent post… you forgot to add the northern sound birgrade in the excuses fan club…. player welfare is non existent which I heard all about last year… the standard of club football in Monaghan accross all 3 divisions is as poor as I can remember in the last 20 years which is feeding into our county team which isn't vinnys fault… regarding Darren yes he's a loss but come on he's 37 years old…as for a few of his club team mates there nowhere near inter county standard…

The second half restored some semblance of pride. Agree on the injured players not being match fit. Woods and Wilson both looked up for it when they came in and should start the next day. seanie08 (Monaghan) - Posts: 1883 - 18/05/2024 18:06:40 2545432 Link 1 |
First of all no desire, no clear tactical idea although how they worked Mohan's first score looked promising along with the goal chance that came after. After that option taking was poor, lateral stuff inside our 45 then poor kick passes or running at them when it wasn't on plus poor shot selection. O'Hanlon too far away from goal, needs to be inside where he can do damage. Selection all over the place aswell. Woods and Wilson looked better than anything that started. Woods has physical presence at least. Dessie Ward also had immediate impact and looked the part but broke down again. Midfield also non existent. Don't seem to have any options without Hughes & Kearns. Lavelle, Bannigan & McCarthy tried hard.

We are entering a very critical phase in monaghan football. It will either slide or we will perhaps rebuild to our advantage. It's been a disastrous 7 months let's be honest. We look unfit, not sharp, players completely out of form and a sliding club scene. Players leaving the panel not a good look either. Last year perhaps papered over the cracks but we have been found out today and all year. The body language didn't good today and I fear for us in this group. 222 (UK) - Posts: 848 - 18/05/2024 19:37:58 2545451 Link 1 |
I have to agree here. These guys are legends and owe nothing to monaghan football but the continual glowing from the fan base about still needing guys shows where we are at. It's been one of the worst years so far I can remember at IC level, hurlers included and under age.

The county are at a critical juncture. They are a squad on their last legs, with wholesale required. The advantage of being in Division 2 next year is that a rebuild can take place. Is Vinny the man for the job? I think he has to be given the chance at least. Is there anyone better? BrehonBlonde (Monaghan) - Posts: 111 - 18/05/2024 20:44:06 2545469 Link 0 |
Exactly my thoughts in the first half.

Travelled with little hope but sense of duty to support a team under pressure yesterday. For the first time in a very long time, I could say that the team and setup let the county down. I haven't seen as bad as that first half since Fermangh 2002. Eddie the Exile (Monaghan) - Posts: 1201 - 19/05/2024 09:33:31 2545499 Link 2 |
Like you Eddie, I travelled with no real hope of beating Kerry, but looking at the team sheet, I thought we would at least give them a game. The first half was embarrassing, and I don't say that lightly. I would have been a supporter of Vinny for sure, I admired him for standing up to take the job, and he did a good job last year. But yesterday, it looked like we had zero gameplay to even contain Kerry. What was the tactic? What was the approach we decided to take? There was nothing I saw that even resembled a clear purpose. Look at what Louth did last week. They weren't going to beat Dublin, but they had a clearly coached game plan that would allow them stay in the game for as long as possible. What did we have? moodoo (Monaghan) - Posts: 462 - 19/05/2024 10:33:21 2545513 Link 0 |
