Decent game considering the terrible conditions, Loman's dominated opening half, The Downs were outplayed in most sectors, lost every kickout but Loman's shooting kept game close. Some of the shooting options by Loman's key forwards early on were mystifying, some of their forwards had a shoot on sight policy in the conditions and clearly the wrong option. They could have been 5-6 ahead easily and it came back to haunt them when The Downs got on top. Charlie Drumm's influence was significant and Kieran Nolan and Luke Loughlin were prominent. Loman's looked flat and beaten with 6-7 mins left. The Loman's management will definitely cop some flack for their lack of substitutes, two corner backs replaced, one injured and no changes anywhere else despite team struggling in many areas in second half. The likes of Paul Whelehan, Kevin Regan, Chris Gilbert, Tristan Graham and Enda Gaffney must be wondering why they weren't introduced. Huge achievement for Lar Wall in his first year with The Downs. You can't question the merit of a team that goes through league and championship unbeaten. Well done to The Downs midlands (Westmeath) - Posts: 532 - 09/10/2022 19:35:45 2443313 Link 2 |

Horrific weather conditions in Mullingar yesterday, The Downs certainly deserved their title considering their run of wins this year. Will be interesting to see if it leads to a period of dominance, their strong underage from 2017 onwards has come to the fore. I think Loman's and Mullingar who were beaten by Tubberclair in the semi final only had one player each starting on the county U17 team as well. Tubberclair have a serious batch of players coming through between ages 17 to 24. Dermot Mc Cabe will miss the replay as he is co manager of Gowna who are in the Cavan senior final. Congratulations to The Downs. Richly deserved and hard luck to Loman's who have been great champions. Also well done to Multy. Martin McCabe's son playing with Tubberclair, doubt he'll be in Breffni Park. Tubberclair won last year's under 15 Div 1, now under 17 div 1 champions, favourites for next year's under 17, intermediate team in final, serious work being done. Son Eoghan in midfield. Is Dermot the Cavan All Star not Martin's brother? Named in his backroom in match programme.

Multy full value their win. Miles above Junior football. They should give Leinster a good crack again Temple56 (Westmeath) - Posts: 372 - 10/10/2022 17:14:45 2443456 Link 0 |
Not sure about Multy being miles ahead of junior football. The standard on Saturday was poor, perfect playing conditions and only five scores in second half. Bunbrosna are clearly trying to rebuild with young players introduced along with players past their best. Bun were in the game up to last ten mins and that was after the concession of a softish goal. Ronan Wallace from midfield scored 4 of Multy's points, their forward division not a patch on the side that won junior 4 years ago. Maybe they'll prove me wrong in Leinster but they'll need significant improvement from last Saturday. Claretandblue (Westmeath) - Posts: 1448 - 10/10/2022 18:10:01 2443469 Link 1 |
What was the story with this game that Lomans never showed for a final. I find that strange. Was in the Park for all finals and I found them very enjoyable. The Senior games while the weather didnt help i thought it was very exciting. Lots of errors etc. Multy too fit for Bun and I think Shandonagh will win the replay. All in all a good enough championship in all grades. gti (Westmeath) - Posts: 239 - 10/10/2022 21:27:19 2443500 Link 0 |
Downs won it because they wanted it more than SL. At HT it was even, elements and flow with SL but the Downs gritted their teeth and put in an enormous 2nd period. Moran, Mitchell were immense but for me it was L Loughlin who won it - out at midfield demanding the ball, carrying it forward and crucially getting on the end of things to score critical scores. He was more than immense and if you compare the 2 marquee players (him and Heslin) you see why Downs won it easily in the end. O Toole and Foy tried hard for SL but the rest of them were out of it with no energy or grit.

Have to agree, Mitchell took his goal very well and his free was also excellent but there were at least 4/5 other Downs lads that had way more influence on the outcome ,Moran .Kelly ,Loughlin, Drumm (sec half) . I know most people i talked to also thought Moran was MOTM. Regardless the Downs were hungrier and worked liked dogs in the second half when needed .Fair play to them

Thought referee Keith OBrien did a great job in the senior final - allowed for the conditions and only blew when absolutely necessary. Always a good sign when the ref is not been spoken about post game. BigSur (Westmeath) - Posts: 1128 - 11/10/2022 11:14:03 2443540 Link 1 |
Yeah, I've seen him a few times this year and he's one of the best around, definitely.

Agreed, Ref's in both Senior and Intermediate finals did great jobs. The ref in Junior didn't let the game flow

Niall Mitchell has to be in there mfor his performances in the semi final and final. Denis Corroon was good for a poor Shamrocks.
