As as team, I think we are pretty well developed as we are. What Sunday may show, or sometime later in the championship could show, is to what extent we need to redevelop.

Yeah I agree. I think that's what I was trying to say but you said it better. I think we have mostly everyone back healthy so there shouldn't be any excuses for bad play. We're either good enough or we're not.

According to reports Kilkenny will be without some major players next weekend namely Eoin Coady(ankel), Adrain Mullen(Thigh) with Tj Reid and Eoin Murphy also picking up knocks........ opportunity surely for Galway with home advantage? 1shot (Galway) - Posts: 14 - 24/04/2024 12:11:23 2540391 Link 1 |
Be Careful of that. For years, I have seen Kilkenny give the impression that their Dressing Room is something like the Casualty Department in a Hospital, in the week before a game, only for them all to turn up on Sunday fit and raring to go

Sunday is unlikely to the day that tricked is pulled. Leinster final onwards I'd be more wary of opposition "team news" in the lead up to a match.

Henry needs a win against Kilkenny

Henry doesn't need a win against Kilkenny (he done that 2 years ago at Salthill). Henry needs to make sure that Galway get out of Leinster and qualify for the AI Championship. Losing or drawing against Kilkenny on Sunday, will not decide that.

Galway need to win Leinster and qualify directly for an All Ireland semi final. Kilkenny are going for five Leinsters in a row.

Trick pulled? Wary of opposition team news's? Get a grip, it's 15 men against 15 men, if you can't handle that, then you're already at a disadvantage before you take the field. Hurling teams are probably named too early, often players with injuries need late fitness tests on the morning of the game. Besides, you often get the named 15 taking the field, but with players changing positions

While we're mentioning TJ Reid, as far as I'm aware this is his 16th season at inter county. Galway9801 (Galway) - Posts: 1942 - 25/04/2024 19:05:49 2540657 Link 2 |
His main focus will be deciding on his best 15 for the rest of the championship and on the subs to replace them. Who will be at FB and CHB, for example, and how have the younger players developed. Both managers will learn from it, no doubt.

Grand lad. Modern day hurling is all about throwing 30 lads onto pitch and "letting them at it" with no regard for the opposition team and setup. I'm sure you're sharp wit during a match would be enthralling to lads around you.

I have nothing but admiration for TJ......fantastic achievement and dedication to keep himself in such excellent consistently good condition. Tony Brown, the "brick" Walsh and Big Dan all had long hurling spells with Waterford but I reckon TJ has the record. katser (Galway) - Posts: 2573 - 25/04/2024 22:21:35 2540681 Link 2 |

The record of championship seasons played? One of the men you mentioned, Tony Browne hurled for over 20 championship seasons, so TJ has a bit to go there yet. I believe TJ does have the record of championship appearances though. It's some career. WanPintWin (Galway) - Posts: 2321 - 26/04/2024 07:53:19 2540699 Link 1 |
I'd agree with you re TJ Reid but would add that he has won a good few AI medals with his county. He can have no complaints. I have more admiration for the likes of Tony Brown, Ciaran Carey, Ollie Canning and other fantastic hurlers who kept it going for years on teams that weren't good enough or lucky enough to win an All Ireland.

TJ is a class act. Hats off to him. Its actually his 17th season of InterCounty and thats not including 2007 when he won an celtic cross as an extended member of Kilkinny squad when they sent Limerick home early. The only other one id compare him to is Pa Horgan who is equally long tenure and just as good. 2 icons of our game.
