Did they get a chance to impress ? From what I recall Martin McManus got **** all game time Vs players like conor Whelan who played all league and we already know is established at senior intercounty level. Makes absolutely no sense

Martin McManus should be given more game time in the league in 2024. Joe Mooney definitely also. Cian salmon yes. Greg Thomas yes. What is there to lose? Far too cautious in the league the last few years

Great article in the Irish Times about the "Career Coach" in the club game. Seems like the going rate is around 15k for the season. BostonGuy (Galway) - Posts: 160 - 24/09/2023 15:46:37 2505438 Link 1 |
Tiny money compared to what ye're paying Bill Belichick and Red Auerbach over there.

I dont think I mentioned any comparison between a club in Ireland and a Seven time Super Bowl behemoth worth over 3 Billion and that would be foolish. If we think that the GAA is an amateur or a volunteer organization we need to think again. The blueprint is the Dublin city clubs who have the $$$ and multiple means of generating revenue, state of the art facilities, professional coaches and can bring in a Shane Walsh or other inter county star to win a club All Ireland.

Blueprint for who? Should we all be 'Dublin city clubs' now, Father? Stool Pigeon (Galway) - Posts: 906 - 25/09/2023 21:13:07 2505723 Link 1 |
The blueprint you'd be better served looking at in my opinion is the English Premiership in Rugby, which has seen two clubs go to the wall in the last 18 months with more likely to follow in the future because they can't sustain professionalism organically and most clubs are almost entirely dependent on a wealthy benefactor. If and when this individual decides to cut his/her losses, the ship sinks without trace. As I've said before, I've nothing against player professionalism if there's a practical way to make it work. In GAA terms, there just isn't. Stool Pigeon (Galway) - Posts: 906 - 25/09/2023 21:19:07 2505724 Link 1 |
I am fairly sure Mcmanus played in league v Wexford and Cork and was way off it. Was red hot in the county final but the step up this year appeared too much for him.

Club bars in Dublin generate little revenue except for a few exceptions. People prefer to socialise in other places. all you get in GAA clubs are die-hards who regard it as their own domain and don't want outsiders.

Now it's the Proper Championship this Weekend in Senior, Senior B and Intermediate.......with all the mickey mouse group games and Preliminary Quarter Finals out of the way! katser (Galway) - Posts: 2556 - 26/09/2023 11:07:35 2505765 Link 2 |
He didn't play v Wexford. Made his league debut v Cork, as far as I recall, and was one of our better players that day. Played again v Limerick and struggled a bit, like everyone else that day. Definitely has a lot to offer.

I could have sworn he came on in the wexford game which was a walsh cup final and doubled up as first round of league.

If you read the article it discussed the paid coaches at club level, not players and how much they are getting compensated. At this stage its more supplemental income for these coaches, but they are getting paid and certain clubs ARE paying. I don't think Mulqueen was coming up from Clare to Mellows for the crack a couple of years ago and there are many others on the coaching circuit. Now how and where these clubs are coming up with the money coz they definitely are is the question. 15k is a lot of bingo, lotto and pints at the bar, the Dublin "city" clubs seem to be better than most at raising revenue and I dont think they are relying on some Sheikh to do it.

You can't judge a player on one bad performance

you wouldn't get a lot for €15k.

He did but only as a temporary sub for a couple of minutes. Anyone saying he didn't step up to Senior Intercounty based on those minutes on the pitch is only a clown. You would need to see him play a few games before deciding he was or wasn't good enough yet.
