I've always preferred GMac over Joe Cooney as a no6 at the highest level. He's just a better more aware defender imo, at the highest level. He's nowhere near as good a hurler of course, which certainly bothers a sizeable cohort of observers, including yourself obviously. So what has actually changed?" I do see the clubs in and around the city getting bigger (Oran, Clarin, Moycullen, Turlough, Maybe Mellows/Cashel) and will out earn the more country clubs. Clubs are spending $$$, so where is the revenue coming from? My point was that Dublin clubs seem to be ahead of the pack on this. As to what has changed? Well more $$$ in some clubs and players transferring to city clubs be it commute distance, facilities or other reasons, city clubs will begin to benefit on a number of fronts that the smaller towns just can compete with. The problem I see is that both of them are past their sell by date for Galway, and they lack the pace for the modern game. God I've never met anyone that thought GMAC was a "better more aware defender at the highest level" and yesterday in a county quarter final he was like a rabbit in headlights didn't know where to go or what to do. I will be very very surprised if Henry persists with him this year. Even Shane cooney is looking much more solid at 6. And the argument of the "joe cooney trialed at 6....." all nonsense. Played well at no7 on that occasion, but got a suitable 'matchup' on Walter Walsh, if I recall correctly. JC is vulnerable to more subtle movers than Walter at the highest level imo, players who'll pop up here there and everywhere. In contrast, imo, McInerney has proven himself to be quite a concentrated defender against all sorts of variety of offensive opponents. Anyway, BostonGuy is right there, we need new defensive options in 2024, not the old ones who have delivered for a decade and more. You obviously have a fondness for GMac and that is fair enough but one of his worst traits among others are his spatial awareness around him as a defender. Semi Finals with not much between them. Turlough will tare into Loughrea and your right K.Cooney is having some year thus far and it will take a top man to keep him quiet. I don't think Loughrea played that badly.......they had a very weak group and you couldn't judge them on that aspect, but yesterday was always going to be close game. Clarinbridge are a good team and missed alot too. In my opinion Turloughmore are better than Clarinbridge and have more of threat in the Forwards. Two epic semi finals to look forward to. Four of the top 5 teams/squads (including Clarinbridge there) have made the semi finals. Pity these wont be in Kenny Park. Will Sars push Toms close? Huge victory against OM even though OM were very very disappointing. A horrible way to end the year considering the year they had.
