French to lead Wicklow in Murphy Cup

Wicklow's Arthur French
Mick O'Dwyer will hand over the Wicklow managerial reins to selector Arthur French for the duration of their Tommy Murphy Cup campaign. The Kerryman said after the Garden County's Leinster SFC defeat to Laois that he had no desire to manage the team in the second tier competition - which he was scathing in his criticism of - and the responsibility now falls to his long-time friend French and his selectors Kevin O'Brien, Philip McGillycuddy and Gerry Farrell. French, who guided Wicklow to a dramatic victory over Antrim in last year's Tommy Murphy Cup final at a time when O'Dwyer was recovering from a minor heart operation, said he was delighted to take up the role once again. "And sure the old fox won't be far away," he added. Meanwhile, O'Dwyer has revealed that he has yet to decide on whether he will continue as Wicklow boss for a third year. The Wicklow county board are keen to secure his services for another year after he led them to a historic Leinster SFC victory over Kildare at Croke Park last month. He said: "It has been a very busy year, so I'm taking a break for now and will decide about next year later after I consider everything carefully. "As for the Tommy Murphy Cup, Arthur and the lads did a great job last year so it's only right that they should have another go." O'Dwyer confirmed that he will be attending Wicklow's Tommy Murphy Cup games which supporters will hope is a sign of his intention to return to the fold next year.
